In this video essay, I talk about Splatoon and Jet Set Radio. It's an analysis on how these games use art direction to draw from youth culture and form their own identities. ALSO YES I KNOW I USED MAJORITY SPLATOON 2 FOOTAGE BUT THE VIBE AND STYLE IS THE EXACT SAME.
Thanks to CorruptedSave for help on the script and description because yes I am that useless

The admiration of the devs for that particular style is what makes the tacky idea of Nintendo presenting a youth culture aesthetic actually work.
This video good.
THANK YOU SENSEI 🙏
Okay I clicked on this and now I know it has the brown bag seal
The world needs a new gen Jet Set Radio
There'll be NINJALA !!!
For sure, that would look so sick
I'm honestly still sad we've never seen a re-release of Jet Set Radio: Future. It only EVER came out on Xbox original.
BOMB RUSH CYBERFUUUUUNK
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk!
i love costumizable characters so much in games, even better if they wear my stuff in cutscenes. whats interesting tho is, that i rarely dress my characters in a way i dress myself.
if anything, i mostly dress them in a way id never dress myself in real life, because i cant or dont want to (assuming the game offers actual clothing like animal crossing or gta and not armor).
its especially fun in serious cutscenes when your character totally stands out and wears like, boots, shorts, a winter jacket and sunglasses at the same time.
...or maybe its just secret wish fullfilment of mine, idk
great video!
I don't think that's too unusual. I spend a lot of time customizing characters when I'm playing a game that has a robust system for it, but I never make one look like myself. I personally find it weirder when people do make the characters like themselves. It's way more fun to sculpt a new character all together. That goes double for the clothing options.
The music of jet set radio is hard to beat. Man, so good.
Thank you for talking about Jet Set Radio. Going through tough times and being at the very edge of a life I once described as a never ending storm of pain, this game made me move my head and get into the music. It took me away from a world of horror and sucked me into a world of graffiti gang wars in Tokyo, full of awesome music and rollerskating. Games like these make you realize it's possible to be happy and as a result you start to look for happiness. It was a strange realization seeing individuality as something to proud of and not embarrassed by.
What made me drawn to Jet Set Radio was it's art style. It was fascinating to hear about the fashion and music choices for these games. ^^
Splatoon straight-up taught me how to be fashionable. Couple years ago when I really got into it I was a real low-effort baggy-pantsed dirty-walking-shoes type of nerd-fashion train wreck whose gender identity was still “I’ll get back to you on that.” Having a virtual canvas to freely try out any style I wanted with no consequences really helped me zero in on the image I wanted to give off.
…Which mostly resulted in me realizing I like flannel hoodies and Doc Martens, but hey. It’s valid.
Hell yeah! Docs are a staple honestly, good style!
hell fuckin yeah lets go
btw I’m sure you’re getting this a lot rn but Eyepatch Wolf led me here and I’m instantly clicking with your videos like I do with few others, I’m stoked to take it all in and see whatever you do next🙏
@@eurothug4000 it took me four years to find doc martins. I didn't want to buy a pair without trying then on, and it was only when I wasn't actually looking that I actually found a pair that fit (naturally)
Ive been saying for years, the fact that nintendo hasnt broken into the fashion world by bringing splatoon brands into the real world is not only absurd but killing me.
Two of my favorite series artistically and musically. Great video!
Really interesting topic. I know that both games have their aesthetic roots in the culture of the region, but it was clever that you expanded upon those origins and examined things like social structures and personal expression, even pointing at things like the user artwork in the Splatoon hub lobby. Tying those back to the developers and publishers' intentions was also a great way to build your topic. This was a fascinating video and I'm eager to see what other games you tackle in the future. Keep up the great work, Maria.
Thank you SO SO much! I really appreciate it 😭❤️
great video. splatoon (and jet set radio even tho i never played it) have such a rare aesthetic.
also the fact that all music in splatoon is 'made' by in game bands and artists is a small touch that i absolutely adore
this video almost made me cry, absolutely amazing. you nailed every aspect of these two games! well done!
ahhh THANK YOU 😭❤️
Whenever I see splatoon i think i gotta get into it! and this might be what gets me into it! Great stuff with the visuals and unique style!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! ☺️
The world ends with you is a wonderful game with this exact aesthetic and themes of friendship that are on point.
I was about to say the same thing! I loved TWEWY with its fashion mechanics
Had the same thing on my mind!!
And we are finally getting a sequel!
Jet Set Radio really needs to make a comeback one of these days also I wish I can do those sick break dance moves In JSR.
Stumbled on this video (and subsequently your channel) recently and I think you've nailed exactly what I love about both of these games. I found JSR a bit clunky to play at times, but I still consider it a massive favourite just because it's so vibrant and charming. And Splatoon is just wonderful all over, and somehow I never made the connection between graffiti and Splatoon's entire central gameplay mechanic despite it being RIGHT THERE, so thank you for pointing it out!
Your videos get me so excited about the potential of particular games that I never really considered before. Kind of wish I'd seen them back when I was still active in game development because you always inspire me. ^- ^
that’s so kind of you to say! 😭 thank you! ❤️
This was a really great video. I’ve never gotten into Splatoon but I loved Jet Set Radio Future on the Xbox so much as a kid. I actually own the original on Steam and I’ve never played it. You’ve inspired me.
Btw your voice is really soothing.
Thanks so much! ☺️
11/10
I really wish they made a third jet set raidio
WOLF PACK!!!!
This video is so well thought out and neatly put together. I loved it. Your subscriber count does not properly reflect the quality of your videos. I hope more of Super Eyepatch Wolf's fans listen to his latest video and just assault your subscribe button.
Your projects keep getting better and better. I never thought someone would take the time to juxtapose two of my favourite games. Your video is amazing!
thank you! 😭 I’m so happy you liked it!
Holy crap at the sneaker selection in Splatoon. Can't believe I've missed this series, customisation looks great!
PS. Great video. Your scripts and voice overs are great!
Thanks so much! ☺️
It's always nice to see some appreciation for the original Jet Set Radio. This video is great, it really gets to the heart of what I love about these games. Nice job!
i found this through SiIvaGunner's DJ Professor K day and i couldn't be happier
also, you couldn't be more right. even just listening to the music from Splatoon and JSR is like being punched in the face by the game's personality and charm
THIS is why I love these games! I was EXACTLY the target audience for the first Splatoon when it came out and it fills me with so much joy, and thank you so much for helping state why!
Awesome video, just found you're channel it's literally all i needed right now; videos about my favorite franchises. Thanks for these amazing videos !!!
The queen strikes back, this time right before her debut HeavyEyed premiere 🤭
THE FACT YOU CALLED ME QUEEN MADE MY YEAR. THANK YOU!! and I’m so thankful he would wanna have me in his vid 😭 (it’s VERY VERY good from the little I’ve seen, I’m so excited!!)
that guy sucks tbh
eurothug4000 THANK YOU for always making fantastic content and THANKS HeavyEyed (even tho he sucks) for introducing me to YOU 🥺
I did not know Splatoon had this expressive fashion side to it. I might pick up the 3rd game and give it a shot now.
This was a wonderfully done video, I appreciated the look and footage of the 2000s environment and culture.
this is a really good video covering a subject that i really love. really appreciated you bringing in the context of the real life history of japanese hip hop.
personally I think the game that best exemplafies these exact themes is the world ends with you. that game is directly built around self expression through street fashion and art, also has an art style heavily influenced by graffiti, and also has a soundtrack full of bangers from a bunch of different genres from pop to rap and hip hop to grunge to even metal. the whole game is basically ine big message saying "go out and make art! wear whatever cool clothes you want no matter what anyone says! make new friends and meet new people, clash and change and leave your mark on society and the people around you!"
i absolutely love games with this kind of are and these kinds of themes. the world ends with you, jet set radio, splatoon, and even in some senses the persona games are all fantastic examples of that. once again, fantastic video. you are quickly becoming one of my favorite new channels in this youtube gaming video essay space. really excited to see where you go from here
Just stumbled upon your channel while looking for Wild World retrospectives. High quality content, keep it up!
Awesome analysis video!! I really adore the freshness both of these games have.
I think The World Ends With You fits with the themes of fashion and self expression pretty well too!
The different equipment in TWEWY is made by "different brands" just like in Splatoon, but this game takes it a step further by increasing or decreasing the effects of your equipment based on if that brand is trending in certain parts of the world map! Really fascinating concept.
wish splatoon got more love i played the heck out of it when I was a little younger. And I like its insane soundtrack
I really enjoyed the video, great work! One of the most memorable things about a game is definitely it's visual style
thank you! :)
Splatoon must be my favorite game I've never played. I love everything about it.
Thanks for this video, it was great to listen to. I subscribed and will be waiting for more :D
I'm really enjoying the topics and games on your channel. You have a voice and style all your own and you are talking about what you love rather than what seems to be the most popular. Wait, just how meta is this video?
I’m so glad I found this video from eyepatch wolf. Creators like you inspire me in my own literary work!
Somebody recomended me this channel, and I really like it. Cheers from spain!
It’s crazy to me that anyone recommends my channel! Thank you so much for watching ☺️
@@eurothug4000 Internet can be crazy. I did a video recommending videogame channels. And in the comments people told me about tens of channels I didn't know from all over the world. I am checking all those channels during this summer. And here you are, a new spanish suscriber.
This was super interesting, loved seeing a deeper dive on the underlying movements behind these games. Splatoon's art style grabbed me from the start, and Jet Set Radio's music (along with Sonic Rush) were instant hits with me as well, and I'm not even normally into hip-hop.
Thanks for making this video. I absolutely love JSR and any chance I can find a video about the game is a pleasure. You've inspired me to keep my content going.
Thanks so much for watching!
Great video and analysis. The most recent game I played that I felt amplified this sort of self expression and identity was sunset overdrive - a game clearly inspired by the likes of jet set radio. Nice job and keep up the amazing work 😁.
Thank you! I will need to get around to playing Sunset Overdrive 👀
Your videos are so imaginative and refreshing! So glad I found your channel!
thank you! :)
this was so fun! Somehow i've never put it together how much an inspiration graffiti is on the inky gameplay of splatoon. Very cool! Thanks!
Yooo that video is sick, it really needs more views and likes. My art style for the past 2 years has been inspired by the graffiti way of things, probably because I used to play so much Splatoon and as of recent since the Siivagunner KFAD I've been getting into Jet Set Radio, making me inspired at a all time high.
Excellent video essay, glad to have discovered your channel! Hoping to see this video and your channel get really big someday! 🤗
Thanks so much! ☺️☺️
Sublime Maria! Jet Set Radio Art style is so unique.
Thanks! 😁
i love watching your videos. they're always so interesting
thank you for watching! ☺️
the best part about this vid is that it expresses exactly how i feel about this games and made want to play them again, thanks
I like the vibe, thug! Also you're extra cool in my book for liking death stranding too.
thank you!! ☺️
Extreme quality content.
thank you!! :)
I was only discussing with someone the other week the reason I was drawn to Splatoon is it has that Dreamcast vibe to it, quirky, distinctly Japanese and vibrant. And of course I was drawn to Jet Set Radio from my graffiti background and from visiting Tokyo and the familiar feel of the locales....nice vid!
Just found this channel now after watching your bayonetta video.
Also makes me hype for bombrush cyberfunk (by team reptile, coming out next year).
Rlly cool video
Love it. The World Ends With You really had a lot to say about fashion and brands too.
I've always wanted to get into fashion more and have also wanted to play these games more. This video was awesome and has definitely inspired me to get back into it all
I just was listening to the Splatoon and Jet Set Radio OST's, and, hey, this video got recommended to me! And it's really really great!
Your voice is super relaxing to listen to
Amazing video essay. I loved it.
Only 3k views? This video is so good and deserves way more!
You started off the video witb Undertow as the background music. Thats how I know you a real one. Beautiful video essay.
What a fantastic video!!
This is a great video, I found it extremely informative and entertaining!
thank you! :)
Another good shout for fashion in a game is The World Ends with You.
fitting you'd make a incredible video bout 2 stylish games when you yourself are a QUEEN when it comes to style friendo loved this video really awesome discussion on identity and how having your own style can let your art whatever art it may be stand the test of time just like you style of videos shows how awesome you are and why you deserve more subs ^_^
thank you so so so much!! ☺️❤️
you are quite welcome maria ^_^
Come from super eye patch wolf, these videos are so good. No one talks about jet set radio and its one of my favorite games
HELL. YEAH
❤️❤️❤️
I would kill for a jet set three or even a tony hawks underground 2 sequel. Honestly besides the game itself the graffiti was one of the highlights for me in that game. And today with so many people being forgotten or left to fend for themselves in thid pandemic. I think society and the governments need to be reminded we exist. We are starving we are being evicted. We are struggling. We are alone. But goddamn it we will be heard. And we will not lay down. We must remind people that while yes we must isolate rn. We must not forget that there are people out there besides ourselves and that this hellish reality is not an excuse to be ignored . I truly believe we are in a cataylst at the moment that could shape our future in severely negative ways. Or supremely positive ways. It just depends on how each individual takes it. And puts it back out into the world. Stay safe folks. And dont forget. You are known by someone. Do not allow yourself to become a forgotten statistic. And if you cant stop it. Then make that number known.
The crossover is- beautiful
Also, great video as always!
Thank you! :)
Nice vid ! Very interresting !
thanks so much! ☺️
@@eurothug4000 you're welcome ... It's pretty interesting how you explain how both games express punk ideology based on their respectives visuals , gameplays and art directions !
Truly , very good vid ! Keep it up ! I'm just angry cause you don't have 1 million views ... So unfair !
a note: the suffix -to literally means city or metropolis, so i think its intended to be an (albeit fictional) representation of the ACTUAL tokyo
I love this video so much
i’ve taken so much of my aesthetic from these games, WOW this video hit different
This video is so good dude.
This is fantastic I'm going to subscribe.
I always thought JSR, Space Channel 5, and Splatoon all could exist in parallel dimensions with each other in the same multiverse.
Great video!
Video like this really makes me want to improve my art❤
I absolutely love that this video points out that what we call "public ownership" is actually state/government ownership.
very cool video!
I love love love splatoons clothing and shoes options lol. In animal crossing all I do is go virtual shopping for clothes as well 😂
This video is just perfect
I liked this video a lot!
Hey, I wanted to say I really enjoyed your video! I always keep an eye out for content discussing JSR, I'm just curious why you didn't involve Jet Set Radio Future? From what I could tell it seems like you used Splatoon 2 footage, so why not the corresponding sequel on the other side?
It was because JSRF was set in the future rather than the 90s/2000s, but mainly because I don’t have the game 😭
This video reignited my love for jet set radio, fashion and graffiti.
Well, basically Splatoon is the Nintendo version of Jet Set Radio🙂
this video belongs in a museum
😭❤️ THANK YOU
Great video
I found your video thanks to super eyepatch wolf and im on the second videos of yours which their awesome
This video be certified fresh 👌
Damn this video was amazing!!
you've got another sub
I still miss jsr, most of my friends are Splatoon lovers, and I'm on the jsr side. They constantly argue and fight.
I would throw in Sunset Overdrive in there as well with this style
Thank you baesd eye patch wolf for doing what the algorithm could not by recommending me this video.
God I adore this video
very nice
another game that emphasises clothing in japanese subculture is the world ends with you!! the game is literally set in shibuya and the music is great too
it's an rpg and i didn't end up finishing it because the unique fight mechanics are the most important feature and i suck at the fighting part of video games haha, i mostly like exploring and stories. but!! i highly recommend to check the game out, it's great
this video is great. congrats.
yeah im subbing your other videos are quality
This video hits like a Funky Beat
And ain't nothin' like that
You need more subs friend
