RED SWAMP VS WHITE RIVER CRAWFISH | Louisiana Crawfish Company

  • THE TWO SPECIES YOU WILL FIND WHEN YOU ORDER LIVE CRAWFISH FROM US 🦞📦
Were you aware that the two most frequently occurring types of crawfish in Louisiana, Procambarus clarkii (red swamp crawfish) and Procambarus zonangulus (white river crawfish), exhibit distinct anatomical dissimilarities? Red swamp crawfish possess a dark red shell with black markings and sizeable, forceful claws. Additionally, they have a distinct "hump" on their backs, which is essentially a collection of muscles used for burrowing and movement. Conversely, white river crawfish possess a lighter cream-colored shell, white claws, and lack the hump on their backs.
Moreover, these anatomical differences between the two species influence their preferences for habitats. Red swamp crawfish thrive in slow-moving bodies of water, such as swamps, bayous, and rice fields, and can withstand low oxygen levels, which make them suitable for survival in warm, stagnant water. In contrast, white river crawfish prefer fast-moving streams and rivers with higher oxygen levels, and they have a habit of burrowing into sandy or rocky riverbeds, which provides protection from predators.
At Louisiana Crawfish Company, we take great pride in providing both of these types to our customers, along with a broad selection of other crawfish items to satisfy their cravings!
