Why Marlon Brando Refused The Best Actor Oscar For The Godfather

- In 1973, the actor Marlon Brando declines the Academy Award for Best Actor for his career-reviving performance in The Godfather. The Native American actress Sacheen Littlefeather attended the ceremony in Brando’s place, stating that the actor “very regretfully” could not accept the award, as he was protesting Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in the film.

So basically a Mafia Don was actually a human right activist
Why yes. He took part in the March on Washington as well.
i mean, he fucked the shit out of that indian gal and then she gave him drugs to make him speak that way
It could've ruined his career.
You're confusing reality with movie fiction, funny man!
Well , he served justice in both ways but yes in exchange for justifiable social legacy.
Goes to show that winning an “Oscar” isn’t everything in the world…
My hats off to you Mr. Brando…
Her career got finished after this incident. So basically no one gave her work anymore since then... That's so very HOLLYWOOD....
Is that true?
@@mirandaswift7978 yes. After this incident she was nowhere to be seen in the showbiz industry
@@lifeiscrzyfun Oh, got it. Thanks.

Bunch of hypocrites. Nowadays, every actor goes on stage and starts babbling about politics and the injustice in the world while their peers applaud them. They do so while happily accepting their reward. Marlon did this before it became a Hollywood fashion. He declined the award and was chastised by Hollywood for it. That's a true trailblazer and a boss right there. He was a man of his own principles and didn't care how people thought about him for it.
Legends don't need awards.
I agree with you.

He didn't even learn his lines in the Godfather and still won an award ! That's talent for ya
He never learned, he found it hard because he found it unnatural for the character.
I know that later on in his career Brando was often having to read his lines from teleprompters, (especially movies such as Superman (1978) and the Island of Dr Moreau and others, Did that first start with The Godfather?
Wow
@@999titu Brando was in a sense a "Type Cast' actor but in reality, he portrayed himself.
@@HighSpeedNoDrag, Dumbo everybody is a typecast that's called subjectivity , you can be the greatest actor in the world but still you can't stop being the person you are it's about how less you can be yourself and that's what brando was great at
Rejecting an Oscar needs a hell lot of selflessness, that’s why he is my idol🤗
But he accepted the second one, didn't he?
This was the 2nd one
Not for him. He didn't care and wasn't impressed by awards.
He was indeed The Godfather, The Godfather that helped the oppressed. Respects to you, Sir.
He won many people with his stunning performances
But he threw away the Oscar for a good cause
Huge respect to Mr Brando
And "accomplished" what? That's like standing on a corner with a sign that reads, "Stop Global Warming."
Not all heroes wears cape ...thanks for sharing this sad but true story 🙁
In reality none do.
@Joel Villarreal bec nothings change with the peoples treatment with the American Indians , then and now , some would look at them as alien in the country which first ,really belong to them .
Bertolucci’s 1972 film Last Tango in Paris. Marlon Brando’s character, Paul, rapes actress Maria Schneider’s character, Jeanne, using a stick of butter as lubricant. In a 2007 interview with the Daily Mail, Schneider said the scene wasn’t in the original script, and that Brando and Bertolucci had told her about it just before they began filming.
The scene is intended to be violent and disturbing, with Paul hitting Jeanne and penetrating her as she cries. But as Schneider made clear, the feelings of violation we see onscreen aren’t just acting - they’re real.
“I was so angry,” she said. “I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci.”
I think the oscar prize statue is a sculpture of Marlon Brando himself.

Most of the onlookers and the press back then were hardcore bootlickers to the Government.

Thank you The Story Behind for the post
he is really a Godfather, helping others with his fame. a true hero
Godfather is my most favorite movie, this video highlights that Marlon Brando was also a great philosopher
Marlon Brando is doing in the 70s, what all of Hollywood is doing today. The difference is he did it before it became "cool". He did it knowing he would face criticism instead of applause. He did while refusing the Award, as opposed to the fakes that do it for the applause, but only after they happily accept their reward. Was Marlon Brando a perfect human being? No, but he was a man of principle and he stood by those principles no matter the backlash. These actors today preach about the causes they want to champion, while they live in their bubble of wealth, not having a clue as to what's going on outside of it. Marlon was walking Dr Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights Movement and received hate and death threats. He was boo'ed on this day because he disrupted their Hollywood fantasy with a bit of reality. This man is a straight up LEGEND.
You dont give a small toy to a godfather
You give me your respect
Love the video! Thank you!!!!
I love when celebrities use their fame to help others.
Angela W virtue signaling doesn’t actually help anyone. It’s just so the person doing the signaling can pat themselves on the back and feel a false sense of moral high ground. It’s just self aggrandizement and the non whites see right through this.
@@Jake-py4lf I'm not saying EVERY single celebrity does this. There are some who actually put their fame behind them to help others. I'm not white, but I'm also not sure what race has to do with anything. If someone is only helping for public or moral gain, anyone with common sense can see that.
Thank you and well done! The more I look back and research actors, I have come to realized the combined violence of his childhood traumas, his inherent intelligence & talent was an insane brilliant force way ahead of his own times ... most could not begin to wrap their heads around, causing a love-hate reaction to all his doings ... even today, most cannot comprehend where he was really coming from IMO ... all while most Americans are still all too happy to be compliant ... while Brando NEVER was!
I can't believe that actresses career ended after that.. What does that tell us about Hollywood and US ?
What we've been knowing for a long time: freedom in 'murica is only a facade and an excuse to bomb and oppress others.

Why didn't he say the speech himself? It could have had a bigger impact. Did Sacheen insisted on reading it herself? It probably was the case since Marlon Brando seems like a man of principles. It's sad it ended her career though because of racism.
The reason why he wasn't there, from his speech:
"I would have been here tonight to speak to you directly, but I felt that perhaps I could be of better use if I went to Wounded Knee to help forestall in whatever way I can the establishment of a peace which would be dishonorable as long as the rivers shall run and the grass shall grow."
