    A friend of mine living in Toronto told me that Jamaica was there to play Canada. The agent who brought Dwight York to Europe came to see him in practice. Walter Boyd spent the time in the dugout repairing his gold chain.

    The first time I watched this man played in the national stadium, he was playing for Galaxy out of Clarendon . He scored from one of the best free kick ever. You are 100 % correct, he had the potential to be one of the world's greatest players, but the lack of certain discipline really was his downfall.

    You are absolutely correct Dr Greg,, Walter Boyd was a generational talent who was great on the ball. The first time I saw him - I don't remember the year nor the opposing team - but it was a Minor League final. I remember going to Jamaica and a friend said we're going to a football final and you should come. He told me about a 15 year-old player who was setting the place on fire. Well, I don't even remember the score even tough his team (Union Garden FC) won, because there were so many highlight moments that we were more entertained by the piles and nutmegs the player was dishing out. I followed his journey over the years and was quite disappointed (beginning with Simoes) that all his coaches were bothered by Boyd's indiscipline and enigmatic behavior. I am old enough to have seen Den Den, Errol Blake, Teacha Hyde & Sweetie Smith. None of them had the mercurial skills of the great Walter Boyd.

    7:40 Thanks Dr. G. I am a big fan of the Pearl. He was a player who consistently rose to the occasion in the Jamaica national team jersey - kinda like Davian Clarke on the 4x400. His goal stats don't tell the story of his greatness. For that one may have to engage in marginal analysis.
    For example, in the 1995 home-and-away series against Zambia, when the Pearl was at his prime, we played 4 games against Zambia 0:46 . We lost 2 of those games, won one, and drew the other. The one game we didn't score in was the game that Boyd didn't start. We scored six goals across the other 3 games and he scored 5 of the 6 and created numerous chances while running the Zambian defenders ragged and giving the spectators many highlight-reel moments. When the series was over, only one Jamaican player the Zambians were talking about - Walter Blacka Pearl Boyd.
    Jamaica has produced many blessed with potential. Some who showed glimpses of potential for greatness never made it beyond school heroes (e.g. Ali Rose from where I went to school), some never made it beyond community heroes (e.g., Winston Fisher Bennet from where I grew up), some never made it beyond US College/MLS (e.g., Damani Ralph), ...
    Only a few who grew up in Jamaica have made top world class players who have played against them while they were wearing the Jamaican jersey speak about the tremendous skill, confidence and fearlessness of Jamaican national-team players. In my opinion, since 1995 these are the players:
    Gk: Donovan Ricketts, and Andre Blake (honorable mention to Warren Barret and Aaron Lawrence)
    Defenders: Ricardo Gardner, Ian Goodison, Taxi Lawrence, and Tyrone Marshall
    Midfielders: Theodore Whitmore and Andy Williams
    Forwards: Ricardo Fuller, Onandi Lowe, and Walter Boyd
    Slot in a center half such as Ethan Pinnock or Wes Morgan and a CDM such as Winston Anglin or Nyron Nosworthy and send those guys out there with a coach that is equally fearless and I am sure that Jamaica would play a respectable game against any opposition in the world.

    At the time when Jamaica qualified for 1998 world cup Walter Boyd was about 26 years old. He was already set in his own style of playing and it would be hard for him to learn off the ball movements . His discipline was a factor but i think if he was the age of Bibbi he would have made it as a top professional footballer and if did play in the match against Liberia when George Weah brought the team here yo play agianst Jamaica it was to highlight Blacka but due to what was going on at the time he made a bad decision not to make himself available for that game also a setback for him. Walter is the most skillful player to repesent Our School XLCR and Jamaica

    His indiscipline had little to do him not achieving world fame. Like Tappa, Tegat, Hector Wright, and others, he was just a victim of administrators with low knowledge and understanding of how the pros worked. He should've been shopped to a European youth academy from no later than age 13. They saw his genius from about 6-8 years old

    • @LetsTalkWithDrGreg
      @LetsTalkWithDrGreg  7 дней назад +3

      True, but at that age he was not ready. When he came to XLCR he avoided soccer for the school for a little before he came out to play. Mentally he was not there to be shopped at any youth academy.

Latapy and yorke combined were definitely marketable because of discipline and mind and skill set. Boyd was very very indiscipline and hot headed. I actually know latapy was better technically than Boyd. All im saying boyd skillfullnes was not enough because being indiscipline will sink you, he destroyed his own career before it even got going. I ask the question in the context of a Reggae Boyz football team player. My answer is a BIG NO and the yardstick I am using is other Great Player with great talent that is coach able (all rounder). This is the problem with most of our great J'can players - too dam cocky. I am talking Jamaican footballers, not other cocky players in other country, Jamaican players. Cant take coaching then you back yu knapsack and GO.

Walter carried the Reggae boys to the 1998 World cup by helping the team to win in several crucial games on the way (Mexico, USA). He opened the doors for UK players to come to Jamaica. He scored some very important goals to help Jamaica qualify. He could change the game at any moment.
