I have that exact model, I've owned it 25 years. I've done lots of little projects on it, but there are some biggies I would love to do on mine, so maybe a suggestion list for you: First, the things I've done:
    1. Rebuilt and improved original 327
    2. Turbo 400 swapped to 700R4
    3. Power steering conversion to later model gearbox style
    4. Front conversion to POL 8-lug power disc brakes (basically uses a 73 C20 spindle/caliper. All factory. Works amazingly well.
    5. Convert points ignition to electronic
    6. Cleaned up all wiring under the dash and in the engine bay. Fortunately, my truck is low mileage and I"m the 2nd owner, so not many issues there. Yours is gonna need a little help from Amerian Autowire!
All that is to make it a really nice daily driver. I drive it all the time and it's super reliable and fun.
Here's some of the fun stuff I'd do if I had the courage:
    1. short bed conversion. this is common on 1/2 tons, but you don't see it on 3/4 ton trucks with 2pc driveshafts, would take some creativity to work around the trialing arm mount crossmember
    2. all metal short bed, with high quality bed liner so I could actually use it
    3. AC and copious amounts of sound deadening
    4. Remove drip rails
    5. One piece windows
    6. Bucket seats/shoulder belts
    7. convert to large rear window
Anyway, I'll be watching what you do. Can't wait to see the engine option. I think a Banks Duramax/Allison would be sweet!

Seat belts in cars, sure a few years later. The DOT however did not require lap belts in pickup truck until July 1970.
They could be ordered in 1967, 3-point seat belts where an additional $45 for these. Also in 1967, the rear window was small, but $62 extra, it was built to have the "Panoramic Rear Window", (RPO code A10) standard in 1967.
DK, ASE master tech since 78.

in 1966 my Dad ordered a Carryall. In the end it cost the dealer more for it then what he payed because of a contract. It had the 327 idust motor. Those half leafs you showed and much more. Before he took it off the road it had over a million miles on it and all that was done is 8 exhaust valves and new rings at 500k miles. Yep thats correct old bearings cam lifters all went back in. He also had a 1966 1 ton 4x4 and a 1966 2.5 ton. All 3 still run today and are in hands of older brother. the 1 ton 4x4 is powered by a old 327 fuel injected Vet motor.

This should be fun and interesting. I bought a 65 C20 in 2000. Mine is a step side and had that same transmission with the original 283. I installed that same engine, a 350 crate motor from Mr. Goodwrench in mine along with a TH350 transmission. Picked up a Square Body front end for the power steering and disc brakes. I also replaced that damn rear end with a 3.55 limited slip that came out of an F350. I had to do a little fabricating to make it work with coil springs but it's been well worth it to be able to drive over 45 MPH and not sound like it will blow up any minute! Gear sets for that Eaton in a different range were non existent. At least, I couldn't find any, so I assumed they don't make them. I also replaced the springs with a new set of progressive springs to give it a little more load capacity along with better shocks.
It rides like a pickup rides from that era and doesn't feel like a car. But it drives like a dream, will pull anything I've wanted to pull and stops very well with the discs up front and the one ton shoes in the rear. That engine was supposed to have 290 HP at the crank when I ordered it and it chirps shifting into 2nd, even shifting on it's own along with the higher gear ratio rear end. I also had a shift kit installed in the transmission by the shop that rebuilt it before I installed it too. I am very happy with the outcome, even after spending much more money than I had originally planned to spend 21 years ago when I picked it up. I almost forgot the Vintage Air conditioning that I installed in it about 10 years ago. It gets a little warm here in Texas driving it in summer.
I don't have much rust, considering how old it is. The rockers could stand to be replaced along with patch panels in the lower fenders but I haven't decided whether I'll ever do any body work on it at all. I may just wash it with CLR one day and then clear coat it after treating the rust with Ospho, or something like it, to stop it from getting worse. I am going to replace the floor and replace the bench with a set of good bucket seats and add shoulder harnesses to go with the lap belts I installed. Seat belts weren't mandatory in 1965 so I had to add them and that bench seat was worn out long before I got this thing. But I am anxiously awaiting the updates as you work on yours and the Dyno results! Mine will be a little less since it has to power an automatic transmission but your number will be a good ballpark number for me to keep in mind.
I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine. But hey, if you decide that you hate it I'll gladly pay you double what you paid for it!

I trashed the hanger bearing in my 69 Volvo 142S while off-roading. I removed the bearing and bushing completely, leaving the support bracket in place. When I returned to roads, I purchased a new bearing but, somehow, I sold the car almost 3 years later with the new driveshaft support parts still in the glove box. It took a bit of clutch technique to avoid (a lot) of banging but I got the knack pretty quickly and forgot about the whole issue.

I’d love to see Gail implement his early hot rod history into this truck. I remember your early 2000’s sidewinder twin turbo kits for abc. But the times they are a changing. Gail should do something with the new gen 5 ls motors now. Seems like everyone is lacking with the new direct injection high psi fuel systems they use.and well as we all know gail has been high psi fuel for longer than I’ve been alive.

Build a full tube chassis for it with independent rear suspension, modern Brembo brakes (but not painted flashy, think stock VW Touareg Brembo calipers that just blend in), modern suspension, rack and pinion steering, and a compound turbo L5P and Allision powertrain. Then drop the ratty body on it, but maybe fix the bed floor and put a mattress back there and call it something like the Banks Super Sleeper and take it up pikes peak. But before all that, since I'm sure Gale has plenty of vintage Banks parts sitting around, outfit that Goodwrench 350 with a turbo or two and force feed it until you find the weakest link in the chain. I'm betting the driveshaft won't last long at 300% MAD. Oh, and if the engine survives that, toss it in a dyno cell and find out exactly when the rods exit a late 90s Goodwrench 350, you know, for science.🤣

I would do a full resto and leave at stock height and NOT lower it but upgrade the suspension components a bit.
As for engine wise and you are always running Duramax Diesels.
No doubt you might use that killing a Duramax engine that can make 1000HP and all the banks goodies to run it.
But that rear-end wont last under that much horsepower and torque
It will be a neat project and a lot of people will have ideas to plug into it.

Put a turbo 3.0 Duramax I6 in it with the most boost y'all can forcefeed it . Paint it matte black, chop the top, slicks on the back.

      Plot twist. Cummins swap.

    • @RedfishCarolina
      @RedfishCarolina 4 года назад

Banks, of course you can go bigger than a 3.0. But you're Banks, and here's a golden opportunity to show how that little 3.0 can whip serious ass when it gets some Banks Power style roid rage. Seriously, Cummins and V8 Duramax swaps are ridiculously cliche at this point and not a challenge at all for you.
Let's see you get 1,000 lbft. of torque out of that 3.0 Duramax.

Those carrier bearings can only handle so much power, which looks like it has been exceeded. Upgrade the drive shaft to the bigger carrier and you’ll never have that issue again.
