Same thing happened to me 11/5…. Thought the shot was perfect, buck went down immediately. In 10 seconds got up and ran off. Good blood for 150yds then it disappeared. Grid searched next property and the one past that. Nothing…. It’s the perils of archery hunting and the only positive I can take from it is that the negatives make the successes even sweeter… I have a large appreciation for how difficult archery hunting is. Chin up and keep huntin!
My first buck was a 42 yd shot that I had a gap of 6 inches between to trees. But that year 1985 when I was the Missouri State Champion (Fingers) I knew I could make that shot. It was a jungle... And I'm still bowhunting at 76 year old today... It never gets OLD...
Deer are way tougher than most people think. We had a huge trophy 180 points plus guided hunt, stalked within 80 yards. Shooter took the shot from a rest with a 300 short mag. He shot it straight on, not waiting for it to turn broadside. That buck went down crashing and thrashing in the alders and went silent. After giving it a half hour they walked up and poked it. It jumped up and took off. We followed that buck for 3 days bumping it up from where it beaded with lots of blood. We finally had to give up the search and did find it at the edge of the lake weeks later. The moral is don’t give up the search, or at least use a tracking dog.
I feel for you dude. Last year I shot the biggest buck of my life and thought it was going to die right away but after 24 hours and lots of help from some great people the buck survived. I've played the entire scenario out in my head a million times but in the end, it's hunting not killing. The good news is the buck was back on his scraps several weeks later.

I shot a huge doe last season. Smoked her through one lung from above. When I was gutting her. The opposite lung was collapsed and shrapnel shriveled. She has a g5 montec floating around in her chest cavity. My friend was a witness. They are very tough animals!
Dude, I had a very similar shot last week. Never recovered the arrow though, and the blood trail dried up. Searched for two days over a few miles. Landowner kicked me off his property as a result of doing everything I could.

Just to add a "same thing happened to me". Good blood for 120 yards, red blood not lung blood. Shot looked beautiful. Must have hit the Humerus bone. Couldn't find it with dogs. Buck was a monster. All the ones that get away are.
This same exact thing happened to me on 11/3. Thought the shot was perfect, loud thwack and mule kick. Found my broken arrow with about 10” missing from it with some blood and hair. Had little to no blood at times when we tracked him. Ended finding first bed with only droplets of blood in it. My hope is it was not lethal or he was shot the following morning during rifle opener. Reminds me of a nice 8-pointer I shot many years ago. Same sound, and as the deer ran away from me, the end of the arrow was actually bouncing on the ground. Never found any blood, nor the arrow. I figured it was a hit right in the socket of the shoulder. Your deer was obviously limping and carrying his left front foot in that footage. It happens.
Been there buddy. That is a huge bummer. The tail flicker like a lot of others said was weird but all in all at the end of the day. Archery can throw some nasty curve balls at you
It looked like a really good shot at first, but the footage after the shot and the limp makes it look like a leg bone shot. I slowed down the video to .25 speed and it sure looks like it hit in front of the shoulder and low. If you slow the video down and enlarge it, it shows either a very front shoulder or leg bone hit, I believe that deer is still alive.
Sorry you didn't find the buck but he may make it through another season. Sure wish there were some tracking dogs that could have helped you retrieve the injured buck. I was born and raised in Franklin County and hunted as a kid before I went into the Marine Corps. I hunted mostly military installations for decades before converting to archery hunting. Once I started archery hunting, I never gun hunted for deer again. The only time I gun hunted was during rabbit, squirrel, (small game) season. Enjoyed a full-watch of your hunt. The first deer I ever shot I saw my arrow move through the woods with a lighted end and it fell out. I saw her lay down and I waited a long time, more than a half an hour and went expecting her to be long gone dead. She stood up like nothing was wrong and walked into the neighbors yard with a limp one one front leg. There was not a drop of blood anywhere in the bed she had been in. It had snowed so i just let her walk with no chase as I had no right to shoot in that yard and it was after dark. I could follow tracks in the snow past the yard by driving around and picking up where i saw her go. Waited a long while more and went back out with a light and easily followed her trail a long way. No blood, steady stride (besides the one google drag here and there). Finally I stopped. I don’t know how long i went but I believe that deer is alive and I hit her bone somewhere they did not shatter for some reason. I found my arrow and it looked like yours, like I’d hit concrete. But was only sticky and damp with fur the top third. Not much on any blood in it. I know many will say I let a dead deer walk but if the coyotes don’t catch her, I think she lived. I’ve never tried to take a heart shot again. More successful after that lesson. Especially if they dip to run, it’s to risky to hit that hard bone.

That's great, but the range doesn't matter if you hit the leg bone, and they move down and back when they jump, so there is no way to accurately predict a perfect placement unless you shoot something faster than the speed of sound.
No way tht BUCK is alive walking around the woods with a little limp. Tht Deer is dead somewhere within 1/4 mile of last sight. 1/2 mile at very very most. I would be shocked if really made it to the 220 yard mark. Almost every deer I shot with a fatal shot did same waggy flappy tail. Don’t take my word as Bible but I would be walking in to hunt in direction of its travel. Looking in the sky for scavengers try get a free meal.
If you slow the video down it looks like he hit it in the leg, if it would have been hit in the vitals they would have found it, look at the shot it either hit the leg or the heart, a deer is not going a 1/4 mile with a hole in its heart, besides a heart shot would have produced blood. the only way that deer dies from that shot is if dies from infection.
These comments embarass me as an outdoorsman. So many inexperienced and/or dishonest people lying to themselves speaking in absolutes on a topic whose only absolute is occasional, unavoidable, certain heartbreak. 32 yards, broadside, stopped in a perfect shot window. The shot, itself, even looked great. But, none of that overcomes the fact that shit happens. That's really why we do this. If we wanted to do something pointless, we'd play golf and just pull out the foot wedge and take a mulligan when times get tough. In some states, studies have shown a near 50% recovery rate on archery shots. So, for every 1,000,000 people who have taken 20 shots and claim to have never missed a recovery, no more than 1 in that million is being honest.

My 10 yr old son had same thing happen ona doe this year. Shot looked so good but hit that knuckle, bled a little then nothing. Went back next morning and jumped her and she literally ran on 3 legs. It's disappointing when that happens but part of bow hunting unfortunately.
Yep he killed 2 bucks in 1 day. I wouldn't of been hunting that same evening cuz I woulda been still looking for the buck that I shot with a well placed arrow. Horrible
I hit a deer about 5 years ago. Shot alittle back and all kinds of bloods and broken area. It was my largest buck ever. He went into a thicket. I took stand back to my vehicle and came back to look for him. They were calling for rain. I made my way into a thicket. I wasnin about 30 yeards when he jumped up and ran. Bed wasnfull of blood. I searched until dark and then the next day and walked over 10 miles aroundnthat mtn. I still have nighmares
I know everyone at the time was saying that should be a dead deer but to me that was low and forward. Hit shoulder blade which is why he was limping but no vitals. Deer should have survived.

It made n odd sound... might have been the breaking of the arrow or something.. i shot one "perfect"this year and it ran figure 8's over its blood trail n me n 3 of us looked. It became the first deer i lost a deer in over 30 years. I switched to fixed broadhead for this shot. Went through like a greased bb. I'm back to my setup that keeps the arrow in the deer. No more tracking for me.
Can't say much about that..shot one looked like the arrow went all the way throgh..watched it run a ways.and waited about an hour.got the arrow.looked were I last saw it.blood every where. Tracked him around the moutain.up a bank were he tore it up trying to get up.up to the ridge down the ridge.and all the way back and under my stand..wind started blowing really hard..leave blowing everywere...lost track.looked and looked.guy said he killed a buck with a weard horn on one side.had to be the same deer..he said it had hit the bone and it cut his Legg and cut his brisket..
Should have never taken that shot. As bow hunters or any hunters we need to be ethical. Let it go, there will be others. To have that beautiful animal suffer like that SUCKS!
First time in 35 years , last year , i hit a giant low nearly heart shot low shoulder upper leg ,, about the same penatration , broke my arrow off. , deer showed up 9 days later in my food plot , and then after 11 days my neighbor saw him limping pushing doe around , ended up getting him late season almost 2 months later
That was terrible penetration. You need to reevaluate your arrow/broadhead setup. I’ve never lost a nock when shooting deer. That deer is dead. You shouldn’t hunt again until you improve your setup and knowledge.
I have heard of nocks coming off with expandable broadheads when they hit solid bone, in my opinion nothing beats fixed blade broadheads, enough things can go wrong while hunting, i don't want to worry whether my broadhead is going to open to early or not at all, or stop dead when hitting bone.
Crying over bait ive baited my hole life and killed less then a handful on the pile hunting is hunting...to hell with all these rules its the reason no one hunts anymore
I have never seen a deer flicker his tail like that after being hit and not die. I believe he is dead.

I called a tracker and he was unable to come with his dogs. I think he told me that he had 20 calls already for tracking.

Looked like he was hit good to me too. Usually if the arrow doesn't come out the other side you get a lot less blood even tho he's hit good.
