      Decades of bad management. We're not selling enough coupes? Well forget making them better just let Nissan have all the sales. Now we're not selling enough sedans? Let the sales go to Hyundai, Kia, and Toyota. We don't have time to make cars people want.
      I also blame auto mags that spent forever pooping on anything American. Not to mention them constantly comparing say, a $25k American car vs a $50k foreign car and then saying the American car was cheap.

    • @originalpunkSxE
      @originalpunkSxE 3 года назад +4

      @@reaperthemad8731 I'm a Pontiac guy myself. The mismanagement of Pontiac started as far back as the 1970's. GM wanted to increase sales so they tried to make them more like Chevy. They didn't realize that people bought Pontiacs precisely because they WEREN'T Chevy. It takes a special kind of stupid to let brands with as much charisma as Pontiac and Olds fall by the wayside.
      But yeah, you're right. GM didn't even care until Toyota passed them in sales. By then it was too late.

    • @billyhndrsn4542

      GM had the opportunity to sell Pontiac, Saturn into private hands, Olds would of maybe followed the same way. But GM decided to let them die out instead. Penske wanted Pontiac, I would of loved to see their modern interpretation of the GTO, or a Olds 442. These brands are instead g o n e . GM is to blame.

    • @originalpunkSxE
      @originalpunkSxE 3 года назад +2

      @@billyhndrsn4542 That's correct as well. I heard that Penske wanted Saturn, but who would have given up an opportunity to own Pontiac too?! My opinion is that GM at least knew that, in the right hands, a correctly run Pontiac/Olds/Saturn brand would have sent original GM running to the hills, so they let them die out instead.

Ignites alotta arguments as to when the Judge actually came out and it was unusual with the stripe package. The car was allegedly a special order for some mucky mucky at IBM computers. There is a build sheet with the car and the original owners name attached to the owners manual. It was sold at Caralise car show to my neighbor summer of 1997. The car had a Calif title originally. The only thing not original on the car is the radio speakers and tires. Figuring 28 inch tall tires, which on 14 inch rims and 70 profile tires, which is probably about what they are, that puts the GTO at about 5200 rpms at the finish. Its top speed probably wouldn't be but a few mph higher, but I figure that's about perfect for that 389 to still be pulling at the traps but almost topped out. The engineers who designed these cars knew what they were doing. Sure you could get a 3.23 gear if you wanted a top speed monster or probably 4.88 or lower if you were doing 1/8 miles drags, but optimum 1/4 runs was what they were going for.

And theirs was just the 400 from what I remember at 390hp? Correct me if I'm wrong. Some serious torque just from my butt dyno! Lol. Edit, after watching video maybe it was a 455? I remember same rear at those numbers

    As I recall, in PSMCD, cars can have a 2.5" exhaust pipe. However, looking at the video at 4:45, the Olds clearly doesn't have 2.5" pipes?! That would make a huge difference in power! Anyhoo, two absolutely amazing cars!

      @@badgerbait8351 The olds W Z manifolds are are a good design they have individual runners cast into them like a shorty header but the collector outlet is to small being only 2 1/4''. I have been told that a strong high performance street and strip olds 455 will pick up 40-50h.p. with long tubes and 3'' . I run a 488 stroker olds powered G body that is pretty mild and I am running the manifolds still because headers cost 1500 and american racing is the only company making them now. I might upgrade to a thorton shorty header with a 2 1/2'' collector but won't gain like long tubes. Ran 12.7 @107 through manifolds but there is still a lot left to gain. You should see the manifolds on non high performance 455's there are a log manifold and the drivers side connects to the passenger side then goes out. Passenger manifold has a inlet and a outlet. There is a lot to gain on the exhaust side of these motors starting at the head exhaust ports they flow poorly and with smog J heads they are even worse. I played with a junk yard 1976 8:1 smog 455 with J heads in my G body for a bit, It was only rated at 190h.p. I put on the better WZ manifolds a performer intake added a bunch of timing and had it tuned perfect and pulled off 13.8 @96.7 which is quicker than the hurst just did with a junk yard 455 smog motor with unknown miles and pure stock internals shifted at 4700rpm. The heads have the exhaust ports joined in two parts in the center cylinders. The worst thing about Olds big blocks are the exhaust side of things and having a tiny bore and long stroke they are hard to get to flow because of small valves and horrible exhaust port design. They also have these air bumps cast into the head I could go on
      all day about.

I think they were just over $700.00.

      1 cubic liter = 61.024 cubic inches, so 389 cu in = 6.375 cubic liters while 400 cu in = 6.555 cubic liters. So it seems that Pontiac rounded up a little for the 389 and down a little for the 400 ... which they later labeled as 6.6L on T/As.
