Sorry to hear all the sad stories. My girlfriend and I watched this movie together online while we were 8500 miles away from each other back in 2016. We kept our belief and hope through long distance relationships. Magically, we made it out to our wedding after 4 years falling in love. Now, she is my spouse and mother of my son. We still got a special feeling for this song. Hope you are all strong believers!

True, I went to see this with some friends but I'm so confused, they are both happy because they are on their path of happyness but that way Isn't achievable when they're together but somehow you want them to be happy together rather than their personal separate way to success... this feels so odd, I want them to have their road to self-fulfillment AND be together this feels so sad.. Its like you finally achieved what your parents wanted you to achieve but they're deceased.. you're happy and can only hint that your parents would be happy for you too... there is this empty felling which is so sad

this wasn't recorded in a studio, the director had one of their first live takes recorded to get that nuance and the genuine feeling like with the laughs and interactions. really awesome

I feel like the song is meant to mean something else. The idea that they feel isolated when trying to achieve an impossible dream and once they actually achieve that dream, they realize that they cannot be together. So they are doomed to be alone if they achieve the dream that they think they desire. They have been told to chase after a certain dream and that it's desirable, but I don't think that it's what their heart really wants. You reach stardom and then what...you are all alone because you pushed everyone that cared about you away because you thought they would be a burden.

Totally agree with you the last part when Sebastian is watching Mia for me as a man was gut wrenching because I can just feel the pain the poor man is feeling as he is playing the song he first played at the restaurant when they met. The scene was greatly built up to and whether it was excruciating to watch or not, it was real life

The sensation I've felt while I was watching It was nostalgia about a story/time i've never lived. I think It's called anemonia. The whole movie makes us identify with a dreamy story that slowly has to confront reality: hence the sadness, but also the sweetness for having lived a carefree moment. Saw this movie with my high school sweetheart when it first came out. The first movie we saw together and we loved movies. The movie as a whole hits so different now that we aren’t there together. Lillie if you are out there just know I tried to make it work for us. Sorry it didn’t work out between us. This film reminds me of us as just kids talking about our dreams. Sacrifice is required for those dreams though from what I’ve come to realize :(.

Also, I recommend you watch Korean movies. They are far, far better than the best from Hollywood, for example, The Wailing, Oldboy, Memories of Murder, The Chaser and so on. You're missing out on the best movies. La La Land is nowhere near half as good as any of those movies. It's extremely overrated like every other musical that comes out once every few million years. I'm not necessarily comparing them, i'm just saying that La La Land wouldn't stand a chance at the Oscars if the whole of 2016 wasn't packed with terrible movies (Deadpool being the only exception). This goes back to my point that La La Land is extremely overrated and the record-matching nominations is a perfect example for this... surely that has to be the joke of the year, don't you think?
As for comparison, if a movie like La La Land can receive so many nominations then shouldn't Mad Max have had far greater nominations? It didn't even though it's eligible for the categories. Again, La La Land is the pure definition of overrated. Anyway, the movie is good, like i said before, but it is also ridiculously overrated.

Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone are phenomenal in it. This movie will win an Oscars for best picture! Ryan & Emma also deserve to win an Oscars for Best Actor/Actress. Damien Chazelle will win for Best Director!

I did. Tried not to let it show! Some other people were crying too....the ending was so unexpected but it was perfect. Sometimes that's just life. It was more realistic.

Edit: Omg I just got a notification about this comment and I'm just seeing how many likes it got, thank you so much guys!! 😄😍 Btw I read all the comments and I noticed some people don't like the fact that she laughs, well, I respect your opinion guys but I disagree. As some other commenters said, it feels so natural and it adds more meaning to the song and I don't think that it feels out of place or unprofessional because the characters in the movie have an intimate, close relationship and they were just sort of goofing around - they weren't having a performance in a theater, it was just the two of them singing at their place because they wanted to and they were doing it for their own benefit. Anyways this is what I think, of course everyone's entitled to their own opinion, no hate 💞

This movie is the perfect representation of how life can be. That it’s not all gonna be a happy ending. That things can happen. That love can fade. And it’s not always a bad thing. Sometimes its for the better.
