For context of the past lives, they were actually talking about Back to the Future during this bit, so it was just a fun coincidence. Also from what I know, they've heard of homestuck since in their final TTAAZZ they discussed how the balance arc is always compared to it but they haven't actually read the webcomic nor understand it.
