First off, as an artist who has had commissions, I am getting more people asking for commissions charging MORE than when I tried charging less. Partially due to skill and partially due to the fact that people will respect you more as an artist if you respect yourself and the time and energy it takes to make art. I put 30hrs into a commission that I got paid 20$ for and that paid for my supplies at most. I’ve have been creating art my whole life and it is just now that I’m starting to realize that I AM entitled to the price I post at because I not only have the skill to charge those prices but I’ve put work into it that SHOULD be paid for. And never stop trying to better yourself as an artist because later on you will be sought after for your skill and style which is why people will hired you to begin with.

i feel like things get very sensitive when it comes to artistic skill, i think its fair to acknowledge that you come from a place privilege while also holding truth to your own statement, you weren't wrong, improving your artistic skill will 100% increase the chance of getting a commission, not that it guarantees one but it definitely helps.

LMAO the tweets that had people mad. Wow. I totally agree with you. It's a harsh truth, but people need to hear it. If you want to make a living at art, you have to charge a living wage and you have to have a good product. If your skill level isn't high enough for you to charge more than $20, you need to improve in order to make it as an artist. I did a sale 3 years ago where I did pixelated chibis for $5 each because I needed money in a pinch. I don't regret it because they only took 30 minutes each, since I was just dressing a tiny base, and I only had to raise about $100. But I can't imagine sustaining a career like that. If I did it all over again, I'd charge $20/hr or more. I was pretty bad at digital painting at the time (I literally used a mouse back then💀) but my pixel art was really good. And if I don't get any customers, oh well, I hate doing commissions anyway.
I'm glad the youtube algorithm pointed me to your channel btw. I like to watch other people draw while I'm drawing to stay on task. Internet people will go out of their way to be offended, try not to let it get to you. They're probably just jealous because you have a platform and your art is awesome. Haters are basically a compliment. 🤷

I really dislike this "place of privilege" thing. Being privileged doesn't mean you can't have an opinion (just like being privileged in life doesn't mean you can't be sad/depressed/have problems).
Nowadays, it feels like one must be in some weird place of struggle to have an opinion. Didn't use to be like that - not to that extent, anyway.
What you said in your tweets is true, and if people felt like you were being rude because they THOUGHT you were saying they suck... Well, there's a grain of truth in this (the part where people need to get better at what they do, not that you're rude) and it probably means they don't like that truth: artistic skill is very important. I don't know many people who'd buy a "badly drawn" (this is highly subjective, of course) piece of art at like $50 or higher.
I've been there. I'm still there, to be honest. I think my art isn't great, and I know I have to improve if I ever want to sell my art. People on Twitter need to chill a bit, for real. They are quick to remind people that have "offended them" that they are humans but are also oh so very quick to forget that those people who "offended them" are also humans.

    • @ayeoops
      @ayeoops  2 года назад +10

yes you're right, it is really frustrating that some of my struggles are now considered gone because i have a higher follower count. i do think its still important to acknowledge my privilege. people mentioned how its annoying to always see people with big followings give advice that is easier said than done. so i do understand that sentiment
      thank u for understanding tho

    • @empty-voiid
      @empty-voiid 2 года назад +5

@@ayeoops I mean, you've clearly worked hard to get where you are. To me, that's not really a privilege, that's a consequence of hard work. Maybe my understanding of the word is a bit messed up, though, who knows! It probably is.
For the advice thing, well... Can't really expect you to give a whole course on how to get better at communicating, drawing and selling your art on Twitter, tbh. But yeah, I do get what you mean.
Thanks for the well-wishes! I, too, wish you luck on your (very beautiful) art journey! ♥

What the hell…does being “privileged have to do with not experiencing “depression”, “sadness” and “intense sadness”
that is just saying White Privilege is “real” and most white people or the white race you know and see refuse to acknowledge it means they can’t experience the ability to suffer from poverty and homelessness.
Just because someone is economically privileged for the structure that our society chooses to benefit those who are rich, stable, upper class and beautiful.

Nah, I don't think what u said was from a place of privilege really. People want to buy art that's pleasing to the eye and know would be really worth to get, and not to sound rude but people wouldnt want art that looks..amatuer. Also this is why the "starving artist" is a thing because artist don't charge the way they should.

You are absolutely right for what you tweeted. Unfortunately on the internet, people tend to get offended easily which they reserve the right to be because that's their free speech. But if you want to start to make profit off it you do need to have skill. In an ideal world, people would support all artists out of the kindness of their heart and not based on skill level/follower count. But this isn't an ideal world, this is the real world. In the real world, art is a luxury. If people have an extra 20-50 dollars to spend they will never realistically commission a poorly skilled artist over a well skilled one. It sounds harsh, and criticism hurts. But sometimes we need to get offended in order to change. Being too comfortable in your art skill and not wanting to hear criticism or want to improve is a big mistake many beginner artists make. Stubbornness or conformity is a deadly sin when it comes to art.

  • @kayodecantdraw

There comes a point where every artist has to "decide" they want to get better if they hope to make a living off their art. Fundamental ability is so important and the people not getting commissions have likely never done a spread of boxes, anatomy, gesture, or figure studies in their sketchbooks. It can take away from the fun of drawing a bit, but it is somewhat necessary to reach a skill level where commissions come from your work promoting itself. And it lends itself to the joy felt when you look at something you drew and can't believe its your work. Great video and thank you for your portrayal of Black characters, in how you don't whitewash aspects of their appearnce (hair, lips, nose etc.).
And for the record I don't believe you were speaking from a place of privilege in your tweet. You spent time on your craft, developed your ability and saw an increase in the gravitation of people to your art. You get what you put out and like you stated, most people want to buy good art. You produce that and that's what has led to your success in receiving fair commissions. Anyone offended by your sound, honest and not unkind advice, likely needed to hear it most.

Wait. Hold on. They got on you cause you said people need to raise price and/or improve their craft? No. YOU did nothing wrong. You are CORRECT.
Be offended does not mean they are correct. I bet these same people wouldn't advocate for someone to build a bridge for 200$. If they did, I bet they'd never use that bridge.
Stop crying. If you can't get commissions when you are pricing them cheap, it's your fault at that point and you need to figure out what you are doing wrong, including improving your craft. Not many people ever really talk about it and I’m not sure if it’s still going on, but I’m sorry that you got criticized for summarizing that in the manner that you did, your intentions are good and I’m happy to hear someone say what you did, it really helped me remember and understand that while growing my social media is good, aiming to increase my own skills as an artist can hold a place as important if not more beneficial in the long term!

in a way i do agree with you, but there's always an art style for everyone, even if it doesn't reach those people. I think its great to take a step back from commissions when needed and improve on your skills but I also feel like they're entitled to having commissions up no matter the skill level. I think it really just depends on the artist and how they personally take critism of their art. some people will take a step back and improve to try and get customers; others will stick to what they have and change their price and/or advertise in other places of the internet. i really enjoyed your video and i think you have some good insight into all of this stuff and how to manage it :)

aware this is a year old but does anyone know how I'll know my art is good? I used to price my art at $5 and I'd spent hours on a piece only to get basically nothing. and it was my fault of course, but I felt it was the only way to find people to commission me since my following was so small. I always see the worst in my art, I always think it's subpar. I really need money, I really want to make a living off of something that doesn't make my adhd go crazy with over-stimulation (working a cashier job, for example 😅). Is gaining a following a sign of good art? I get complimented all the time but it's by my friends. I don't know at all, it's like full on art dysmorphia.

I’m going to say it. But I think a lot of people who likes to draw, has a huge ego problem. Which is why you get people who get upset when you tell them to improve their art if no one is buying it. That type of upset behavior is why people won’t ever improve or get better at drawing, because they let their egotistical traits get in the way. Seriously how dare you charge people for art that is at intermediate level? that’s MORE RUDE than being told to improve your art skills. It says a lot about your personality too for being upset at being told to improve. As a person who draws and is old as heck, it is SO appreciated when people gives me the truth.
DO NOT regret tweeting that out. Seriously. I wish people comment more on the ego of people who draw. It seriously is an issue and is why artists are stereotyped as snobs who put a toilet on display at a art gallery and calls it art, and get upset when someone say “hey this ain’t it”
Ok rant over. Just please stand firm and don’t regret that tweet. We need more people like you.

To the drama you had. I think you are right. Because its not worth to draw for money when you have like 7-8h of work. (if we take normal work hours like in a job). If you would compare this to an low wage of a fulltime job its like 12-14. So alone 1-2h of work would be more worth than 20 bugs. I hope my example is not too far off tho. I like the Video! Really inspiring! I always look for other ppl to talk about art and stuff but nowdays its so hard to connect. I always feel like I wanna write some artists and chat about art and stuff but then again fearing to get rejected and be a wierdo trying to talk to random ppl on the internet :D I am sure I am not alone with this wierd feeling.

I'm at a place right now where my commission post has been up for a while and still no commissions but that's fine with me. If there isn't anybody willing to commission a piece from me for the price I've set out then that's their decision, and I don't really feel obligated to lower them especially since I'm a minor and don't currently need the money.
I think a lot of the reason I haven't gotten any commissions is because I haven't been around a lot on Instagram and haven't done enough for me to be trustworthy. I may have a fair amount of people as an audience because of my friendships with more influential artists, but I think they'd rather stick with what they know.
I also agree that I have LOTS of room to improve and struggle daily with my art. I'm always trying to push myself by doing hard poses and backgrounds and just anything that feels out of my comfort zone and gives me that frustrated feeling. That frustrated feeling is how I know that what I'm working on is something that will help me level up :)

The way you draw noses are soooo cute! It's refreshing to see a nose with wider nostrils like mine 😍 Most artists I've seen on Twitter just put triangles and high bridges 😩

HI! I love your videos, but I do want to also add the plateau a lot of fan artists face. I have 160,000 followers on tiktok, and 12,200 on instagram, which is amazing, but it also causes art that is not specific to the fandom to do terribly. Fanart is a great way to gain followers, but i suggests not dedicating your entire account towards one fandom, because then you'll have followers who do not like your other content. Great video!!

yes its definitely a good boost but if its not something that a person wants to do for too long, then they can incorporate original art along with it too! sad to hear that non fanart doesn't do well for you tho :(

Ahh oh my gosh you're so talented! I merely stumbled upon this video by chance and I didn't realize I would actually need advice like this. So thank you so much for the advice! I never thought about the fine detail that would go into becoming more of a professional artist (Well not exactly professional but you know what I mean lol) I have been wanting to take commissions more seriously alongside going to university, now I realized that I need to make some changes and create an invoice along with a TOS. I'm sure that with the help you've provided, I can have an easier time with creating/doing commissions! So thank you again for sharing your process and the way you handle commissions!

Im sorry if this is rude to ask, but is there a reason you don't draw side view? (Sorry if you do, I couldnt find any!) I love the way you draw eyes, but nobody ever does a side view with them, do you know any artists that do?

HOWWW did you get into drama over that?? like why do people purposely misrepresent what someone says when that obviously isn’t what they were saying???? it was tough love at “worst”. good advice.

Omg there are ppl dying and u got “”””canceled””” for saying ppl should respect themselves enough to put a valid price, like if u don’t agree then just don’t do it 😭😭

I remember when I gave someone a valid criticism and they flipped out on me. Were they expecting praises? But she was asking what I thought about it. And how I thought about it is that there was a lot to practice on. The arms were too thin, the pose was too stiff and the hands needed more practice because they were scribbles. Mind you, she wasn't a pre-schooler crying over their scribbled art. But she was a middle schooler, same age as me, who wanted to take art seriously.. I worded it the nicest way possible by telling them that there is certain things that needed more practice but overall, it was good. I even listed what needed some practice and she flipped out on me, storming off. I felt like shit for trying to help.

i definitely agree with if your not getting commissioned its probably because of your skill people want to commission good and high quality art because it falls into the category of getting what you pay for people are more willing to pay more for a higher quality and higher skilled piece than paying something cheap for a lower quality piece its not being mean its just sadly how things work in the commission community taking a step back to improve will not just help you get more commissions it'll help you and your skills as well its a win win situation when you improve your art your skills get better and a higher chance of commissions.
