Cracking a Large Missouri Geode

- We have a lot of people comment on the fact that we are not wearing safety glasses in this video. 1. We have the towel on it to keep debris from flying. 2. This video was taken in 2014 when we were just starting to take videos and post them online. We were very new at that time and have since learned that wearing safety glasses and leaving the geode uncovered is a much better way to crack them. We definitely believe that safety comes first, please understand that we were still in the learning stages when this video was posted. I always believed that they were sawed in half. Wowee opening definitely pleasantly surprised. ❤️
Thanks! We typically do not use a saw because it would cut through any internal mineral extras.

I'm not sure how you feel we blocked the camera, but there is nothing secret about what we do or how we do it. We have several videos showing exactly how we do what we do with more to come. Check out our newer videos. Thanks for watching!

Yeah, considering the video was taken years ago, it was pretty hi-tech at the time.

Looks cool!! Use shorter handles so it takes more work!
Thanks for the tip. Longer handles tend to break. Thanks for watching and rock on!
Wow. Those are so pretty. ❤️
Thank you!
we dig them up at one of four places we have. the Geodes for the most part are based on whats inside them for minerals over size.

I came for the geode itself, but now I find myself interested in the device.
It looks like a soil pipe snapper.
Yes it is
Pipe vice
Yah, me too!
....all this time I thought they r using saw/grinder to cut or open a geode..
=(
@Lucas Stidman where in Missouri can we find the geodes? On our property in the far Northeast corner. Keokuk Geodes can be found in Northeast Missouri, Southeast Iowa, and Western Central Illinois.

What is the name of the tool you are using? I've got a large one I'd like to figure out how to crack it open. Thanks. God bless!
It is a cast iron pipe cutter, sometimes you can rent them from a home improvement store otherwise you can call your local rock and mineral club and see if they know where you can find one or your local plumber. Thanks for watching!
ULTRA COOL!!

I'm 61 now and have been fascinated with geodes and thunder rocks since I was 4. This video was great. What a beauty! Is it just rock the surrounded it that you had to crack? Reminded me cracking a really big, stubborn walnut. I'm going to look to see if you have more updated videos and how your business may have prospered and how techniques have changed. What would the worth of this one be in today's (2019) market?
oh hell, it was your chain! not rock. lol
I'm not sure what we would sell this one for today. We do have many newer videos and keep posting new ones weekly. We still use the same method-cast iron pipe cutter. We also have a very active Facebook @FabulousKeokukGeodes

Great job.u broke it.
Great job, guys! All that patience paid off in spades. I'm so glad you put the towels over the geode, but I'd be even happier if y'all had been wearing eye protection, if for no other reason than to discourage amateurs from losing an eye "trying this at home." Beautiful piece!
This video was taken several years ago. We now wear eye protection all the time. Make sure to check out our other videos to see the other beauties we have found.
Another person who thinks they are alone in thinking safety. How about someone watch over your shoulder....check to make sure you water your dog, change your tires, never drive with a chip in your windshield.

beautiful ive loved rocks sens i was a kid im 51 now i have a geo shaped just like a snowman ill never break it its to cool to break it ive not seen another one like it
We have had people purchase some from us that they never intend to open also for various reasons. Sometimes the outside looks so cool they don't want to ruin it!
You filmed that with an geode too?
Where can someone purchase unbroken super sized geodes like this ? Are there wholesalers in the MO/KY areas?
We do not wholesale unopened geodes but we do sell unopen large geodes. All our contact information can be found at www.fabulouskeokukgeodes.com
that's awesome
Thank You!
awesome
Thanks!
Where are your goggles? This is making my eyes wince! At least there was a cloth cover.
They covered it with a towel?
Why do u care if they are or not ?
@@coldfire2935 I care about people doing unsafe stuff that could blind them. I have macular degeneration and I am slowly going blind, so the loss of eyesight is losing something precious.
This video was made when we first started filming geode openings. At the time we used a towel to keep any small pieces from hitting us. If you check out our newer videos you will notice we now wear goggles. Thanks for watching!
I might want to try my log splitter on that thing.
We've heard people say that. If you try it, let us know how it works! Make sure you wear your safety gear!
Well that was suspenseful, maybe bigger handles would help... ? Enjoyed that thanks.
Thank you! Please check out our newer videos to see the treasures we have found recently and make sure to subscribe for updates when we post new content. Our newer videos are much shorter 🙂
what you need to do is cut that handle off on the crank that sticks up weld it back on closer to the middle so then you can slide a metal pipe over the end to do the last few turns a ton easier.
Is there any geode place in Australia nsw ?? I might head down to Oberon for some frolicking but idk where I can do geodes.
I don't know that Australia has any geodes. We have some friends who own opal mines in Australia and who sell other rocks from Australia but I have never heard of any geodes from there. Sorry! Thanks for watching, be sure to subscribe to our channel and watch our other videos for more recent finds!
What was the guy doing behind the rock that made it crack open? Pumping something mysterious!
hydraulic pump tightens the chain
What a treasure!
Thank you!!
4:42 you are welcome.
Thanks!
How do we know we found one? Where my mom is from originally is from the sierra madre in Mexico. Everywhere you walk you see super shiny stones like glass, like this stone. Since when we visit we travel by bus, there out of the way to bring some stuff back
this formation of geode is only found in the area where Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri meet.
You ever got any flint or Burlington chert for flint knapping? I buy a lot from other knappers but I'd drive to Missouri for a truckload if you have it t sell
Not by the truckload, sorry. Thanks for asking.
It is a cast iron pipe cutter.
and they are a bunch of hacks
I'm from South Dakota, we had gravel hauled in and I found an orange agate 2"x1" could u tell me the value of it???
I'm sorry, I don't know much about that. You might try to contact your local rock and mineral club and see if they have any ideas.
Good adventure hard job beautiful piece but is loosing time no body pays a cent for it!
Thank you. We actually sell our geodes in person and online. Thanks for watching!
I have never done this before with rocks
What is the name of the tool you used to crack it open? I appreciate you help.
Robert reichelt Its a castiron pip cutter
Called a chase cutter
Chase cutter or chain type copper cutter is different than this. this is for cast iron soil pipe.
it is a cast iron pipe cutter
I recognize it from using one at work. Pipefitter!
Where are you guys located? I am in Illinois, I have one that is a bit larger. It has been sitting in garden for yrs, now after seeing this video , I want it opened.

man, that the biggest Geode I have seen!
nah there are some that are larger than two trucks
we have some larger than that now
Oh NO guys, someone must have a water jet. Nice.
Why not cut it with a rock saw or concrete saw? I use a tile saw for the small ones as well, lots of dust but a really clean cut thats easy to polish. Just curious.
Our geodes tend to have a lot of calcite inside them and if we cut them, we cut the calcite off and it is not repairable. If we crack them and the calcite breaks it can be glued back in. We typically do our cutting after the geode is cracked open or if we have one we can see the inside of. Thanks for watching! Be sure to check out our newer videos to see more of the amazing beauties we have found.
