Glen Matlock is the unsung hero of the Pistols. He was the original bassist (before the photogenic musical mannequin Sid Vicious) and he wrote or co-wrote the majority of the songs on Never "Mind The Bollocks". It was personality conflicts that saw him replaced by a camera- friendly junkie who couldn't really play.

I think you're overegging Matlocks part in the writing. He certainly came up with the majority of the melodies, although these were greatly beefed up and expanded on by Jones. Lyrically, only this one, which was his song originally ( athough Lydon rewrote most of it),was his. I think he takes claim musically for Anarchy, and of course Pretty Vacant he claims was based on Abba's 'SOS'.

But boy the camera did love Sid. Did you know that Vivienne Westwood recommended "John from the store" aka John Beverly/Sid Vicious audition as the Sex Pistols' singer. But they got the wrong John. Thank god they did. Because if they hadn't we would not have the scathing wit of the esteemed Mr. Lydon. He had the words. The message. The anger. And for the last 20 years, he's been caring for his wife who had Alzheimer's. Not all that bad of a guy.

Written mainly by Glen Matlock (the guitar riff is a speeded-up rip-off from ABBA's SOS!) Given that the Pistols first two singles were banned from pretty much all TV and radio this was many people in the UK's first exposure to the band via Radio 1 and Top of the Pops (they wouldn't have them in the studio after what happened the last time they appeared on TV but they played Julian Temple's video). In that regard, it's probably the most important of their singles since this, directly, spawned a thousand imitators.

I remember the moral panic in England when they swore on early evening TV. There was an attempt to ban the album because of the word bollocks so Richard Branson got a university professor to testify that the word was 14th century slang for a priest! The whole punk thing was really a cynical marketing thing. If it was intended to take music back to the streets it finally failed. Its main legacy is pretentious music journalism. As Peter Gabriel sang in 1974, If you think that it's pretentious you've been taken for a ride..." In 1977 there were plenty of posh kids who liked punk. All my working class friends were going to Yes and Genesis gigs which were routinely broadcast live on the BBC.

Bought the Bollocks album, and this is one of the strongest tracks - another top ten single in the UK. Love the hard rock riffing and John's sneering vocals. As for the lyrics, I remember London in the mid 70s; we all felt like snarling and sneering.

I think this is arguably the Pistols' weakest track. But considering that Never Mind the Bollocks is a glorious masterpiece with no weak tracks on it,
that's not saying much. As for John Lydon's voice? I like it. To me, he sounds like a furious Bob Dylan, and I've always loved Dylan's "Sprechegesang".
I'm far less impressed by John's support for Donald Trump, but let's not go there...

I never found the Pistols particularly exciting, whose mid-tempo rock always struck me as a mix between AC/DC and the Stones. Also I find Rotten's voice unbearable, so not for me.

@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering I was 12 in 1977 and I didn't discover the Pistols and the rest of the punk scene until three years later at 15 when the movement had long since ended but if I had been 15 in '77 I think I would have had the same negative impression about the Pistols, even though I immediately appreciated The Clash, The Damned, The Stranglers, Generation X, Ruts, etc....
Musically the sound of the Sex Pistols doesn't appeal to me and the voice of Rotten/Lydon puts me off. I never liked PIL for the same reasons.
