Bobby Darin is Michael’s all-time favourite singer/performer, and his mother’s favourite is Elvis. Elvis used to go and watch Bobby perform. Michael has certainly done his reaearch😉.... now I wonder if he knows about Sam Cooke?😏
I was visiting my dad a few months ago and after getting back to the house after seeing friends, I found him in his room and he had passed. My world was quickly flipped upside down. The only man to ever sing "Mack The Knife" with exquisite perfection and exceptional justice is Bobby Darin himself.... Bobby Darin always did everything with 1,000 percent perfection, this young man was a total genius and brilliant entertainer... Bobby Darin out shone Sinatra, totally leaving him in his wake..... Yes, I have listened the all versions by the other singers but nobody sings it like Bobby Darin...as you nicely said he sings it "with exquisite perfection".
Excellent. Nobody can sing this better than Bobby. It's very sad he died at such a young age. However he left us with some great songs. None of which is better than this one.
Magic. Listen to this song on a great set of headphones. You can hear what a fantastic performance it is. The band playing soft and low until the line: "Now Jenny Diver...HO HO" where all that energy just explodes. I get goose bumps every time I hear it.
December 20, 1973 - American singer Bobby Darin died aged 37. One of the first teen idols, he had the 1959 No.1 with “Dream Lover” plus 20 other US Top 40 hits during the 60's including “Mack the Knife”, (Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1960).
Saw Darin at the Cave in Vancouver in 1966 and still the all-time Greatest show we've seen and I've seen a lot.. met him backstage, was quite a thrill ! My favorite song.
I remember his TV show ending with his back to you and strutting with that graceful stride and the music simply playin that famous tempo of his as he was saying good-night . What memories .
For the 60 who voted thumbs down, guess you don't like this music or talent. Bobby Darin died so young, at the age of 37. I use to sing along with him on this song when I was a kid. Found memories when both my parents were still alive. Micheline Kribs Rolla,MO
I remember seeing Bobby Darrin sing Mack the Knife on TV in 1973. What an awesome song & performer. Than a few weeks later he was gone. I felt cheated... thank God for recordings!
Thanks LePage for taking the time to write the words to this classic song. Sung by no one better than Bobby Darin. Love his voice and style. I pray he is in Heaven singing for the Lord this time.

I was a tyke, age 3 when this was aired. I have memories of hearing beyond the sea on the radio when I was little, but had no clue who was singing or what the song was. Flash forward to age 21, I'm getting out of my car to visit my girl friend when this came on the radio. By the time I was 21 I was familiar with the song, but didn't really give it much thought, but on this particular day, I cranked the radio as I stepped out of the car and snapping my fingers and clapping my hands to this amazing song. Bobby made it swing, he felt the groove and brought it alive. Such a cool guy. The sad thing for me is there are so few people who really appreciate him, at least people I know. I'm a drummer and would love to play for a guy like him, even though I grew up listening to British progressive rock like Yes and ELP, playing this style of music is my dream gig.
1993 - I was newly married to a lady who was just as much a music junkie as I was. One afternoon I was flipping through the TV and happened to the local information channel, just written announcements and music, and Mack was just starting. I started singing along and got off the sofa and performed the track, ending on my knees singing the "MACK HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAATH'S BACK IN TOOOOOOOOOWN" part at the top of my lungs. My new wife (long since, sadly, my ex wife) just looked at me, smiling broadly and said "I didn't know you had it in you. OR that you knew that song." Good times, great song sung PERFECTLY by Mr. Darin.
"Mack the Knife" or "The Ballad of Mack the Knife", originally "Die Moritat von Mackie Messer", is a song composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht for their music drama Die Dreigroschenoper, or, as it is known in English, The Threepenny Opera. It premiered in Berlin in 1928 (from WIKIPEDIA)

Extending the history a bit deeper, The Three Penny Opera was derived from The Beggar's Opera, penned by John Gay and considered scandalous in 1728 when it opened. Despite that, it was wildly popular at that time. Am a descendant on my Dad's side, and it's family tradition to keep this song alive in public places, karaoke machines be damned. He had rheumatic fever numerous times between 8yrs and 12 yrs old. It caused what is called a rheumatic heart and he suffered ill health all his life (he used oxygen backstage throughout his career/ suffered a suspected heart attack as early as 1963). @@zorinabakah8182 I rechecked. Darin's version got to No.5 in 1959 in Australia. Armstrong's recording was No.1for 4 weeks in 1956. However, records may have been higher or lower in different cities or states as there was no Australian National Top 40 until the 1960's. The many radio stations had their own Top 40's and it seems from them a State Top 40 was complied. On YT there is a recording of radio station 3DB Top 20 from the very early 60's and they mention it as the top 20 songs for that week in the State of Victoria. Now, whether 3DB just regarded it's charts as "statewide" I'm not sure. The Kent Report research has now complied national charting records for these earlier years.
