@@MattIrwinPhotography Im using the Zfc with the Viltrox 13mm 1.4 these days. I'm on a buget, you see! I used to shoot with D90, D700, D750 with an aps-c lens from Tokina (11-16 2.8) which also worked well on FF. But I'm planning to go for the Zf soon for the faster AF. And now there is this Laowa 10mm AF, because wider is better for action squash pics and video as well.
And I need to put the lens as close as possible to the glass of the court, so the removable hood and no bulbous front element are a must for that kind of shooting (to eliminate reflections).
I just bought it because I needed a lighter wideangle lense than my Sigma 14 mm 1.7 which is excellent but unfortunately very heavy and I have to manage with 12 kg for a SA trip. I feared the distortions would be even worse than the 14 mm, but it is amazingly good at it. Only thing to consider: at 2.8 its sharp in the middle but gets noticably softer around the edges IF you zoom in massively. I did some handheld night photography with the 14 mm that I could not have done with a different lens, thanks to it being 1.7, it helped to do awsome lighthouse shots, but I always thought twice taking it thanks to its weight. The Laowa is so light, just pack it in case you might need it and with 2.8 its still an excellent night lense.
I’m getting this lens for Live Music Photography and closeup nature photography primarily. This is the best review of this lens I’ve seen and so glad I watched it all the way through. At $800 US dollars almost half of the 14-24 f/2.8 S lens of Nikons on a sale that is it’s a touch high you’d think. But as it being so good for a lens that’s 10mm and an f/2.8 that’s kind of crazy cool. It’s a very useful lens for what I do. I will use this a lot . I’ve been looking for a super wide lens to create unique perspectives and separate my photography and videography from the pack . Thanks Venus Optics
Matt I watched a review on a Sony body. The lens hood comes off and there is a 77mm filter thread, there appears to be a lot of chromatic aberration on the Sony, a difference in sensors and processing perhaps? On another review the firmware is upgraded via the Z body, I am very interested in this lens ,
Cheers Micheal, yes it seems the lens hood is very firmly attached on my copy, and with a much harder twist, it does come off. Interesting about the chromatic aberration on the Sony, yes there are potentially a few factors, even processing software might make a difference .... Thanks for the intel. Cheers Matt
What a lens for ultra wide, given the minimal distortion that doesn't require correction! Colours are popping too. I doubt I would often shoot that ultra wide. Somehow, my AF-S 16-35 f/4 was my least used lens, except for tight group shots! I should have requested for a "wefie" along with your new bike when you delivered the books! Definitely, I will take you up on the shooting around Melb one day. It's been a long while since my D3 days! My young kids are my subjects for candid and they keep me busy. We can be both in our favourite colour, including sunset orange Zf!
VERY interesting video. I have now pre-ordered one of these for my Zf. Thanks Matt. Mind you, a bit of a strange edit where you start to mention the lack of an update port, stop, and then repeat it later. See 7:34 and 12:02.
Preordered a few days ago and have the 77mm ND filters. Fantastic that a 10mm lens can use filters. I have the Sony A7iv, but many in our camera club use Nikon and they too are looking forward to experiencing what this lens brings to the art. Thanks for the review.
Thank you, Matt! Another great review from you. Your "favorite of the night" is stellar and certainly shows the lens capabilities and your wide eye composition experience. I have the 9mm and 12mm, and am looking forward to the new 10mm capabilities! Always look forward to your posts! Especially when it is for a product that I was long hoping would appear.
Looks great, I wonder how it would be for astro. Are the stars in the corners good without chromatic aberration etc? Yes I could get excited about it for Aurora photography where sometimes you need a wide angle to get most of the big events into one frame.

I’m currently thinking a lot what lens to get below 20mm. This lens certainly caught my attention.
Excellent video it was this or the 20mm nikon lens with my new Z8 purchase from B&H. I chose this lens because of this video Im certain its a Excellent choice. Im wondering about firmware updates but no worries yet😮
Matt thanks for another action packed review. This Nikon AF Z lens and I believe the Sony E-mount lens as well comes in two versions. One has 5 aperture blades and another has 14 aperture blades. Maybe I missed it but which version were you testing? Both versions are available for pre-order at B&H New York USA.
I'd love to see how it compares with the IRIX 11/4 which, at least for the moment, is only available in F-mount rather than Z-mount. It does, however, work quite well with the FTZ on a Z 9 and has great build quality and weatherproofing which I don't know if the Laowa equals
Peaked my interest! I wonder how it will do taking nightscape images. Now there is a 10mm and the 9mm from 7 Artisans. 3rd party is stepping up their game. Pressure is on Nikon to release a ultrawide for the Zmount.
@@MattIrwinPhotography, I seen them, they all look great. Guess I should have said astrophotography nightscape. But those cityscape images are quite impressive. And Laowa has definitely upped the game. And we have the 7Artisans 9mm which from what I have seen so far looks impressive but it is only a manual lens. But there is nothing wrong with that for people who grew up with them. I’m just happy to see these companies putting pressure on Nikon to release primes in ultrawide. Have a great week my friend. And your pkg should clear the US today or tomorrow and be on its way.
Nice review again Matt. Just wanted to make one small correction though. The lens hood is removable unless it is on the Sony mount but not the Nikon Z for some reason. That would be odd.
Hi Glenn, yes after reading your comment I have tested the lens. It is extremely firmly affixed in my copy, but is removable. Thanks so much for the info.
interesting question, I think yes, of course would require precision with the camera framing, rotation and tilt. Let me know if you give it a try, I would love to see how that turns out.
The new 10mm seems to be vastly superior to the Laowa FF II 9mmf5.6 W-Dreamer lens. I have to do vignette and real (not-optical) distortion adjustments with the 9mm; I use Photoshop. For instance shooting an extremely large steam engine (UP Big Boy) broadside, I had to induce pincushion distortion. I sure would like to try the new lens.
Hello Matt, just a question do these lower cost lenses threaten the OEM lenses. We know that Nikon, Canod, Sony and others are making amazing camera bodies, at what point do they stop making lense. I know I will only buy OEM glass as it has been so much better.
I think as we have seen for example with the Plena, 85mm 1.2 and there would be other examples, that I think this level of glass will always be with the OEMs in general. Although there are a few examples of fine 3rd party glass, from say Sigma. Some people will always choose OEM, and some will go with the budget friendly glass. I think it is possible for them to all co-exist.
I like the perspective that you get with that lens, that said at $800 it seems a bit pricy. Maybe i need to see some more review of it to get excied about it.
Interesting lens. For me, I don't think I would need AF for a lens this wide. So I wish it were manual focus and a few hundred cheaper. A chip for EXIF and aperture control would be nice, but I think I would just shoot it at 5.6 or f8 anyway, which would give me more than enough dof without worrying about focus.
Matt, it would be great if you discuss the Environment Friendly Use Period (EFUP) and China RoHS because there is a controversy raising again and to be honest I've never paid attention to that while it seems very wrong that nobody talks about that while at the same time we pay thousands for camera gear that obviously won't last "a lifetime" like you, Kon and Becky often say but it's just 10 years as per Nikon. And that's for all NIkon lenses from cheapest to the most expensive ones. It's shocking to say the least.
I will look into it. As for lenses lasting 10 years, I think the Z glass will last longer than that, I now have lenses which are 6 years old, no signs of change, is this what you mean?
