Two and a half years ago one of the first videos I made was speaking about being a so-called "Straight-acting gay guy". The main reason I made my channel was to connect with others who felt the same as me. I wanted people to have someone they could relate to and that to have someone to watch that was thinking and feeling some of the same thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
A few years ago some of the most popular gay youtubers where williamsled and chriscrocker. Many gay men cannot relate to these individuals. I am very happy that over the past few years the representation of gay people on RUclips has vastly broadened and there are a variety of different types of gay people that gay people can relate to.
Straight Acting is still a widely-used term, but I think it will begin to die out over the next couple of decades.
I told my best friend yesterday that I'm gay. He said, "I've known you 13 years and never once thought you were gay." Not all gays are flamers. No offense, but I'm only attracted to other straight-acting guys like me. And it's not an act. It's just me.
Your speaking voice is so cool. It's so deep and rich!
@CaseCloseted I made sure to include your channel because I think quite a few guys can see themselves in you. You're someone they can relate to and someone who they can be inspired by. There are people out there watching your videos who feel better about being gay, because you're posting your videos and they can relate. Good job and keep up the good work!
I seriously love this video man. Really puts into good wording how I feel about the whole stereotypical gay scene. Its that stereotype that makes us "straight-acting" gay men more closeted that other I feel. I'll be posting this to my twitter and favorites on my channel dude. Thanks again bro
I was always looking for people that I could identify with, it's natural. And that included looking for people to subscribe to on RUclips (I subbed to you so I guess I felt I could identify in some way with you!) It's so nice nowadays as inceasingly the gay community seems to be increasingly diverse as more people have the confidence to come out. I hope it continues
Also, I haven't heard the term 'straightacting' this side of the pond in ages. It might have already gone extinct in these parts!
Erik glad to see you back
Great to hear from you again Eric! Keep up the good work!
Great video. I'm more on the masculine side, so it was extremely difficult for me to come out. I actually just made a vidya about it.
Hey there its nice to see you again! I can't believe that its been "years" . To me it feels like it was all last week, when Jay made that video of how you got attacked on a website, I remember that was the 1st time I saw you and then subbed =D.
I just made a video that relates to this and posted it as a response. I agree with your choice for the channel name because it's how I found you! But I also agree with you that it should die out soon. As I say in my video, being gay just means you are attracted to the same gender. It has nothing to do with your personality. Anybody could be gay. Thanks for making so many great videos!
glad your back!!!
Always love your videos!!!!
@Flanole I very much do think that historic gay stereotypes have been overblown. I suspect that more people than we realize are gay. One of the reasons I suspect this is because so many people make it such a big issue. For most of history many guys have just blended in, many not ever acting or speaking out about their feelings. It no longer needs to be like that anymore. The people I've listed are only just several of many guys who feel the same way.
I don't like even like it when we are further labelling ourselves as regular or normal. I don't want to be regular and normal. I want to be the best me I can be. I'm happy with how I portray myself and have tonnes of friends of many orientations.
@LazyTallGuy Yes, it is surprising. He made that video nearly two years ago. Thanks for continuing to watch.
Here are some great videos by some great gay teens (and twenty-somethings):

@123moscowman I'm biased of course, but I think the title fits very well. My two points in this video are that the term is still frequently used but I think eventually it will die out. If one browses around RUclips these days one is can find a pretty wide variety of gay people blogging on RUclips. A few years ago the variety and number of people wasn't as great. To me this is evidence of a changing society and this change in society will lead to the death of the term straight-acting.
I'm gay and "straight acting", and I hate the term "straight acting". I know a lot of straight guys who are very effeminate, and I know a lot of gay guys who (like myself) act like, well, just guys! Just because your gay doesn't mean you have to act like a total drama queen or a girl! If your a gay man, still be proud to be a man! You shouldn't be MORE effeminate than straight girls. Just be yourself, being gay is secondary to who you really are!
At first I thought the term "straight acting" was a little off, but I respect your reason for using it, now.
I think that when some gay guys come out, they let their real self come out. Sometimes it's not such a dramatic change, and for some they were always feminine and that's how they were. For some, they were the most masculine thing out there and then 'turned femmy' when they came out--that was the real them. I think that people are more used to seeing the more masculine side of the spectrum now and are realizing that we're not boxes, you can't put one term to encompass all of us
I worked in a high school for a year and found that it was much harder for the "straight acting" ones than the "out there" ones. The teachers could usually tell, but the kids couldn't, and you could just see how tortured they were. The upside of being called "fag" at 13 is that it clarifies things particularly when you get support from other kids.
I see a lot of people getting upset over the term "straight acting". Look, you know what the person means. Sure, "masculine" would be a better term, but you know what he means.
you so so so rock!!! I hope more gay dudes struggling find you!
yea, thx for posting. good to hear from you again bro!
You are very correct! What does "straight acting" really mean, anyway? I think the idea was that "straight acting" would mean not feminine or stereotypcial, but more or less "regular." However, plenty of straight guys are kind of feminine, so who knows? Your comments are always thoughtful and appreciated.
Just a regular guy. That's me. I'm not so straight, but not flamin' either, just in the middle. Good to see you again.
I am gay and have many gay friends, however I do NOT date fem guys. I am out and do not hide who I am, people just assume I am straight. What fem guys do not understand is if I where straight that may be appealing. I want a man who acts like a man. Dating a fem guy would be like dating a woman. Like I said, I have many friends who are gay but I also have just as many friends who seem very straight who are also out. The moral of this story is there will always be guys like me who are out! Not all gay men are flaming. Some of us are quite reserved and professional.
Lol, wtf, you go to SCSU? Wicked!! I was like, I recognize that bacund. Wait, he has a Saint Cloud State shirt on. Dude, we go to the same school.
Thats so true. I remember when I went to both Tech and Apollo and the flamboyant gays were the only ones out....which made me wait before coming out.
The last point I wanted to make about insecurity in gay guys. Some gay guys will be overly masculine and even become homophobes themselves due to pressure of being stigma of being gay. And that i find is a poor quality of a man. A "real" man (or a a strong character) would be to be secure and stand up for who you are, that is when you gain the respect from other people and that should be the mark of masculinity.
@PurpleKillJoy I understand where you are coming from and I agree that the word "straight acting" gives a little too much power to the straight part, but I honestly think that it's a term that works and even in my writings I have had characters who are gay but try to act straight. I don't think straight acting should be used for people who are out and are perceived as straight, but instead for guys who are in the closet and act like a straight guy.
@gocallyoualawyer Without a doubt many of the recent people who have started blogging gained their inspiration from his videos. It's a good thing his coming out video gained so much attention. Now in turn, more people will be inspired by the new people who are blogging. In a way, it's a bit like the snowball effect.
@BrianRegan5 your use of the term makes a lot more sense then this guy's use of the term. Although I do not believe in the invention of the "Closet" that the gay community has created for ourselves to hide in. ALTHOUGHHHHHH I do realize that in some situations it is necessary because sadly people are still EXTREMELY ignorant, and it's better to be safe and unharmed. This world is a f'd up place.
I recommend checking out danformuk from his list in the comment section.
Well to me it is refreshing to see the type of personality u having benign a gay man. I know for alot of reasons some gay men hate the ter
@PurpleKillJoy Believe me, I've heard every reason why I should be criticized for my name. I understood when I was creating my channel the connotations, the implications, etc., that the name could have. I was sure though, at the time that I would do much more good with my channel than harm. I wanted to reach out specificly to the guys who identified under this label. Two and a half years later I am sure, without any shadow of a doubt, that my idea of doing more good than harm has com to fruition
@Drawlen Thanks, I'll be uploading another video a little later tonight.
The term "Straight acting" is marginalizing not only to gays, but to straight men. There are straight men who cook (Mario Batali), Design Fashion (Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren), Perform on Broadway (Matthew Morrison), and some straight men are the biggest primping pretty boys you'll ever meet: Ryan Seacrest, Dwayne Johnson, Mario Lopez, David Bowie, David Beckham I could go on for days, these men are down right pretty and proud of it. The term straight act needs to die out because it's false
I guess I'm lucky to be able to wear makep a la rockstar and people still think I'm "straight" :D
I know some gay men hate the term straight acting but I don't want someone who is all about makeup hairstyles and shopping I prefer a guy who will watch a football game with me or knows how to work on a car.
@PurpleKillJoy I wouldn't really pay much attention to it.
I myself find it hard to find anything in common with alot of other gay men
My personal view on why some gay guys are exceptionally feminine is because as they grow up they get rejected bu the majority of straight boys and they find comfort in more understanding female audience and befriend it and take after the qualities of that audience, i.e. femininity. Why they become at times even more feminine is because they want to be accepted into society so they over do it. I am not sure the extremely feminine behavior in men is natural (the high voice and mannerism, etc)
thanks for this !
I find it offensive that some gay guys that are more in touch with their sensitive side would insinuate that I'm against "the gay community" just because you told them for the tenth time that you are attracted to average men, less sensitive, lets say. The whole thing to me and is very personal, about been gay, is that I'm attracted to men that are average like me. It shouldn't be offensive to anyone, if you want to be respected, you've got to respect others.
The thing I dislike the most about gay stereotypes is to me it kinda defeats the whole purpose of being gay. To me being gay means being attracted and aroused by another man not to stop being one!
@StraightActingGayGuy next there will be channels like "WhiteActingBlackGuy"
@StraightActingGayGuy and you would find nothing odd or insulting about that name?
@1bwash You're right, a fair number of guys do this.
I have this problem. i dont look or at gay. Most people are shocked I am.
i stress about this allot because allot of gays do get confused and think they need to act like a girl, i find it quite offensive to be honest and i can understand that there will always be feminime guys but gays really do play on this.
Im a gay dude who likes Punk and Metal and cant relate to most other dudes any gay punk rockers out there but I do like your videos dude you have a nice voice
I think it is stereotypical to have a gay guy constantly talking about how he's just a "dude" and he's "regular."
Hey did u go to St Cloud State? I went to SJU!
nicely said i think it has allot to do with when gays are growing up they will subconsciously put themselves in the prinsesess shoes when watching fairy-tales and i think they get very confused when they get older which role to play. now obviously people like me and you can think for ourselves resulting in not having to act up to any stereotypes, but allot of people cant think for themselves.
Im gay but scared to come out.
I agree gay does not = effeminate
I love this guy!
I hate the term "straight-acting."
As if all straight men act a certain way and all gay men act another. It make no sense.
@janaxis Be sure to check out some of the channels I've listed in the description! All of them are on the journey of coming out and they all are helping people in a lot of different ways! They are really encouraging!
I like gay acting straight guys.
@CJCA915 I think your right.
@StraightActingGayGuy that's pretty messed up.
Dude You're Fucking Awesome I'm A Masculine Gay Dude And I Love It.
@PurpleKillJoy Anythings possible.
The reason you get so much criticism for your name is because it doesn't make sense. "straight acting" would mean you liked women. You are either gay or you are straight. Gay people don't have to be feminin, but there is no way in hell I'm ever calling myself "straight acting" even though I am considered such by many. It imply's that "straight" is "normal" while "gay" is "bizarre and weird." Humans need to stop focusing on their sexuality so much. It hardly changes even 1% about who you are.
"Straight-acting gay guy"... Ellen DeGeneres comes to mind.
same with me with lesbians! we are not alone trust that!!
why cant you identify with straight blokes sporty types i love john inman and quinten crisp
you think you're straight acting, but a purse falls out of your mouth every time you say the letter s.
He just has a slight lisp, that's all.
@Rfritz09 Amen
@oxygene6661988 One could argue that.
I actually made a vid on the whole str8 acting thing, check it out it's on my channel
The term "straight acting" upsets me b/c it doesn't sound like a masculine gay man but rather like a gay guy that pretends to act "straight/butch". There's a difference between being naturally masculine and "straight acting" (it's that word "acting" that ruins it). I understand why you chose it, but I hope this term or concept whatever you want to call it dies out and dies out fast.
"straight acting", "masculine"....lolz
that;ll be all
They do have all types of Gay men out there am in between manly and queeny and you are cute and handsome and are you single.
@thisispaul7 =)
@cumpanyun =)
@scarlet88breeze =)
Just a comment on the discription and term straight acting. That term really perpetuating that straight is better than gay. Wish gay men would discribe themselves as masculine Gay Men than straight acting.
