This is a fascinating topic for me. I learned Spanish in Los Angeles, mostly from working restaurants (mostly Mexican dialects) and then formally in college (Castillian). The college course was tough because there were many native speakers in the classes. We had a Texan in one class and even me, as a non-native speaker, could hear the way his Texas accent came across in his Spanish. I amuse my Spanish speaking relatives by doing that Texas accent but I would love to learn Colombian, Puerto Rican and some other ones. I moved to New York City and thought my Spanish had really slipped because I could not follow some overheard conversations on the subway -- turned out the speakers were Puerto Rican. Lastly, during high school my best friend had immigrated from eurasia at age 14 and he learned English very rapidly and very well, albeit in Compton so he picked up that dialect and had to change it since he does not present as black. His mother was in her late 30s and languages get more difficult to learn with age. She learned English fairly well but when my friend and I wanted to say something in front of her which she would not understand we would use a hard Southern accent. Eg. Whatchu wan do t'nite? I reckon we cud go down the club an' get rip roarin' drunk.
