  • Hakeem Oluseyi is not your average astrophysicist. From rural Mississippi, he took a circuitous route to a career in science, with a detour through Silicon Valley. With eight patents under his belt, he moved from the tech world to a life of research, teaching, and the global support of young scientists. He speaks about his inspiring journey and his cutting-edge work on computer, telescope, and in-space propulsion technology.
This program and a student matinee featuring Hakeem Oluseyi are generously underwritten by the Lohengrin Foundation. The student matinee is also generously underwritten by Baxter International, the Illinois Arts Council Agency, and Lorraine and Jay Jaffe.
This program was recorded on October 26, 2014 as part of the 25th Anniversary Chicago Humanities Festival, Journeys: chf.to/2014Journeys

Come to Kenya please. I think science and the knowledge of physics especially is extremely under appreciated in this country.

I am very impressed at Hakeem, ability to be honest, and explain the theory of what it actually takes to make in society. Nothing is easy, and if you want it you are really going to have to work for it. He makes me very proud to know that regardless from his past, an individual can become anything they want to be in society. Hakeem is a very well astrophysicist/professor/teacher who makes everyone believe they can be a scientist too.... Thank You.....

I grew up pretty much adapting to whatever crowd was nearest to me. I'm going to be 42 and 13 days. I turned into a geek a couple years ago. Or a nerd. Whatever you want to call it. It's never too late hahaha. I just got his book in the mail today. Opening the box I felt like a little kid opening a Christmas present. I got the hardcover edition and I took the Sinclair plastic that libraries use on their books... Off of one of the library books that I bought and I put it on his book. But yeah... It's never too late. Pick a sciency topic and dive right in.

What if we had people like him running our country?
    How great could America be?
He knows how it can be, AND how to beat it.
