Gotta disagree. As amazing as that is, it doesn't beat out the Righteous Brothers' (Bobby Hatfield's, really) live performance of _Unchained Melody,_ from The Andy Williams Show. And yes, although it became one of their standards, it *is* a cover.
Respectfully, there’s so many great cover songs out there. All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix is a cover. So is Talking Heads Take Me To The River (Al Green originally), Elvis Costello’s Peace,Love and Understanding (Nick Lowe), Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Want To Have Fun (Robert Hazard) and Soft Cell’s Tainted Love (Gloria Jones). So is Johnny Cash doing NIN Hurt but I think that is more of an impactful video than a cover song. This is an excellent version of a great song but the original was so incredibly popular that I don’t elevate this one as highly.
"And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon God they'd made!" I always watch the eyes on that line. Surprise! Weren't expecting that, were you? Whoa, indeed.

@GordonJohnFraser Yes, it was. It was widely reported that the producers used it because David was sick that day and when he found out that they used it ( without his permission), David was livid
It's amazing how talented people can sing one and the same song and deliver complete different messages. The original by Simon & Garfunkel was a folk song that admonished people to be aware of a changing society and the possible dangers. Disturbed's version took it backwards. Showing what had gone wrong and being angry about it because the warning was out there. To complete the circle I strongly recommend you listen to Pentatonix's rendition as well. Totally different mood and message. This is one of a very few cases where a cover can stand up to the original and even excels. An equally outstanding example is Johnny Cash's rendition of "Hurt" from Nine Inch Nails.

What I haven't seen in these comments is the type of person David is. He once stopped a concert dead in its track because he saw an 8-10 year old girl being afraid during an intense part of the show. He went right up to her and comforted her and told her it was only a show, than brought her up on stage for the entire crowd to cheer her on. You can watch the clip here on youtube.
I heard the original years ago by Simon and Garfunkel. It was good, I enjoyed it. However, when I saw this version (and this video), I remember getting goosebumps and being moved to tears. It hit me different. Maybe it was my music upbringing. My mother was a professional singer, I grew up in recording studios. I played concert piano as an older child. Something in this speaks to me on a level different than the original - and make no mistake, Simon & Garfunkel were very good and well known. If you've ever heard the song "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" - that's them also. This is a re-imagining of the original in tone. Simon & Garfunkel were folk genre and the song was meant as describing the breakdown or failure of people to communicate in their grief - the song was written shortly after John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Still, Paul Simon said he liked the version by Disturbed because it conveys much of the same feeling overall. It doesn't have to be grief. It could be depression, or other failures to communicate. In a modern world full of media we can use to communicate, we often fail to do so. Somehow, Disturbed seems to strike a chord this way.
Simon and Garfunkel wrote this song at a time when the tv was taking over the home. People no longer talked at the dinner table, they watched tv while they ate and the tv was becoming the electronic baby sitter. They were warning us not to ignore each other. Disturbed is the reality we have today. People talking without speaking...they text. Hearing without listening...they read what others write on their phones. No one wants to disturb the sound of silence by actually interacting with another person. And the neon god we made? The Smart phone. A whole generation has lost the art of being social with each other and that is the fulfillment of Simon and Garfunkel's warning and the rage for this loss is Disturb's version.
Simon and Garfunkel didn't write this, Paul Simon did, on his own, and later played it for Art, and it wasn't a warning, the first line of the song came from when he used to practice in the bathroom to get some alone time. He would turn off the lights and turn faucet on, and the tiles had a nice echo, one day he simply started strumming and said, "Hello darkness my old friend", then he wrote the rest over the next several days. He said...."The rest of the lyrics were basically things I heard in English Lit class in college, that I hoped sounded dark and and full of teen angst, that would impress the ladies".
This is one of Disturbed's greatest songs hands down. Here are a few more suggestions to show you what David Draimen is capable of. Fair warning one of the songs I am going to suggest is dark. It is based on events David dealt with personally. (Inside the fire) This is the song. The other songs are great because of the message they tell. The Light, Don't Tell Me, Divisive.
I believe his range is F2 through A4, which demonstrates remarkably throughout. Notice the subtle vibratto on the last word of each verse. He's amazing
When I first saw this music video I had NEVER even heard of Disturbed and at first one word came to me. Distopeon. It felt like some dark universe or some movie with a very dark and Distopeon feel to it. It made me ponder as you were speaking of how there is so much negativity not just in the areas of entertainment and news and basically all entertainment, but also in the real world. For example, I am a medically retired professional CDL driver. Driving trucks for a living and living my life traveling on the highways I can tell you that out there on the roads you see the absolute worst in people. Road rage is a very real thing. Over the years as I spent well over 20 years on the roads, instead of getting better it has genuinely gotten worse and even to the point where on the roads it feel even dehumanizing to a point. I'd see these accidents where the state troopers pull white sheets over the windshields of cars indicating someone had passed away tragically and then people just drive on as if it doesn't matter. People driving batting angry enough to do the worst things just over the smallest gestures and towards the very end of my career I felt like this was only going to get worse. Especially here in Texas where if you spend time out on the open highways, it is REALLY bad out there. I've witnessed things I wished I could unsee for sure. I hear this song and suddenly all of it floods my mind and I get that sense of Distopeon and darkness covering our lands. One man unalived 2 teen girls in a car all because they cut him off and made rude gestures as if they were better than him and he chased them down and did what he did. 2 CHILDREN over what!? I've seen enough of these things to last 2 lifetimes. People who would unalive you over NOTHING to get their way! Run you over if you're too slow. Man oh Man am I glad I retired and I do not have to ever be out on the roads!
Probably the greatest cover of this brilliant Simon and Garfunkel song. As far as covers go, one that is right up there with it is Johnny Cash's cover of 'Hurt', which is well worth a review! :)
Music touches and stirs a part of our soul, a place that has been repressed for thousands of years, this is a battle cry for our fading voices, a message that tells us we are doing exactly what we're told, and saying what is acceptable.
I’m really glad you watched this version, the live performance just doesn’t have the same impact without the visuals which I think are as integral to the experience of this song as the vocals and the music itself!
So glad you used this video without the boxes on the screen at the end. The symbolism of the musicians and people writing songs coming together is important.
Try the live version with guest appearance from Miles Kennedy of Alter Bridge (another great singer of a fantastic hard rock band). The duet really is something special.
Your eyes give it away! Behind someone’s eyes is your thoughts! Very beautiful reaction, pure and honest! It moved you and with those gorgeous eyes! I see your soul! The Sound of Silence was actually a cover of a Simon and Garfunkel classic (same name but a little bit different). However, Disturbed are actually a Heavy Metal band usually but have actually gained a lot more fans following their version of this Simon and Garfunkel number.

Loved your reaction. Appreciate it. Thanks. I had stopped listening/paying attention to music for twenty or thirty years or so. I grew up in the 1970's. I caught this performance being reacted to on YT, a few years ago, and it got my attention. Then Oliver Anthony, then Ren. I found your channel when you reacted to Ren's I Shot the Sheriff. Loved the chance to re-watch Disturb's Sound of Silence. Thanks again.
I see this more as a post-apocalyptic setting with a touch of Mad Max. They gather up the instruments after some unspecified disaster, load them on their ship and return them (or deliver them?) to the people. Yes I watched it cold sober - lol.
I see the video as a manifest against the state the music industry is currently in, with music made without real instruments or real musicians and without real songwriting.
The instruments are silent without the music and the music is silent without instruments. The end brings them together. The lyrics of Sound of Silence are much deeper.
I do not call this a cover song. It is an experience and stands on its own merit. Still giving kudos to Paul Simon but Cover or not. Doesnt matter, It is its own power and emotion. If you don't get chills, or emotional or tears then there is something seriously wrong with you. I am 77 and have listened now hundreds of times and still get goosebumps and still tears. David reaches in and grabs your soul ..So incredible. (Oh and David has a vocal range of over three octaves, from E2 to B5: he is ..beyond amazing . )
Check them out on the Conan show singing live this song. It affected me, and I discovered they were appearing in Edinburgh the following evening - bonus.
I was late to this party too. I love to listen to covers of great songs. Often they are terrible but you do come across some gems too. This is one of the very few that transcends the original. I was stunned when I first heard it about a year ago.
Another song derived from an old hymn (very old - centuries) is performed by Epica ft. Floor Jansen is "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" (really Simone Simons and Floor backed by the orchestra - non metal). You should hear it. Yes it's in Latin, but you can still feel it. The grief conveyed is palpable.
The way I saw this is the song is about post apocalypse... when people are moving about in the dark trying to get the old ways back and the singer is trying to get them to talk to and listen to each other... also the true impact is in the final lines "the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, And in the tenement halls... " In other words look to what the silenced in the old world said.... graffiti. Some very profound thing have been said thru graffiti .. like Banksy and others... the only voice they had was spray cans but they were wise
On the Dutch tv show "Beste Zangers" (Best Singers) Henk Poort performed his take on this version of "The Souond of Silence" and I honestly can't decide which one I like better Henk Poort singing Disturb's "Sound of Silence" or Disturbed performing it If you haven't checked it out already, you definitely should

Many out there, donnot grasp, that certain very heavy bamds are acxualy very moral.based, almost christian based,,, they are heavy and talk about dark subjects, but Disturbed, Metallica, slayer, ministry, and many others are accialy very much based on morals and the conflicts of society
Definitely one of the best covers ever. It would be great if you would also check out Geoff Castellucci's version. Very different but just as good, IMHO. Geoff is the bass singer for the Acapella group VoicePlay. So prepare yourself for the smoothest, lowest bass singer you've ever heard. He also does all the background harmonies with his 5 Octave range. You have to hear it to believe it.
Not bad if you like covers. It is an unforgettable, thought provoking, lyrical masterpiece when you consider that it was written and performed by Simon and Garfunkel in the early 1960's before we had the Internet or the World Wide Web. In those days (I was a teenager) artists had to have real talent to sell records .. none of this streaming and downloading nonsense! I miss those days!

simon and garfunkle, 1960's 70's New York city, Vietnam war going on and song writers writing anti war songs that no one payed attention to. Graffiti on the subway wall and on tenement hall walls. Neon signs flashing messages and advertisements all around. People walking around without really interfacing with one another. A completely different world than today
You should try *The Warning* - 3 sisters who David Draiman (lead singer of Disturbed) said gave him hope for the future of rock music. They are headlining a European tour now and will be in Japan for at least 3 shows. Try their new 'Automatic Sun' or 'Evolve' from their 2023 MTV VMA performance.
This is NOT their Norm. They often do Covers, and they are great. Oh, by the way, their Norm, DISTUBED is a HEAVY METAL Band. If you are interested to hear their Norm, listen to DISTURBED, Down with the Sickness. That is their Norm. Great Post.
Simon & Garfunkel understood subtlety: they gave us 'The Sound of Silence.' Disturbed missed those lessons in nuance and finesse, and so produced 'The Bellowing Cacophony.' The authentic song is about silence and significance. The modern perversion is about roaring and chaos.

The people wrote and held the music and the boat carried the musicians and instruments across to them. Best version ever !
Yes, check out the live version too
I loved your reaction!
it's so cool and shows as well that heavy metal band singers actually have singing voices. paul simon gave it a big thumbs up as well
there have been many attempts, but seldom does a band totally nail it. On the strength of this alone have I become a HUGE FFDP fan
Metaphorically, musically and vocally a tremendously powerful performance. I believe he is operatically trained
Is Awesome a big enough word for this rendition...blew me away!!
I’m really glad you watched this version, the live performance just doesn’t have the same impact without the visuals which I think are as integral to the experience of this song as the vocals and the music itself!
One of the greatest remakes of the greatest songs of all time
So glad you used this video without the boxes on the screen at the end.
A beautiful soul and your the perfect person to show just what this song means! Powerful and beautiful….I want to see more of you and your reactions to different songs! You definitely intrigued me! Show me more!
Was not a song I loved until this rendition. What an amazingly haunting voice
All other reactors to music videos take note, this is how a reaction should be done, no making it about yourself and stopping the music every 10 seconds to give your 10 cents worth. Well done Swift Reactions you have hit the right note.
Thanks. I wondered why that video did so well.
Excellent reaction this is the best cover of this song ever many people try but none can compare to disturbed, later girl.❤️😎🇺🇸
I get chills every time I hear them do this song.
I still cry every time I hear this version. Thanks David
Now Down with the Sickness by the same band
You might want to give a bit of context about the rant. But yes, definitely the next song from Disturbed
The Sound of Silence was actually a cover of a Simon and Garfunkel classic (same name but a little bit different).
However, Disturbed are actually a Heavy Metal band usually but have actually gained a lot more fans following their version of this Simon and Garfunkel number.
Disturbed -The Sound of Silence video has over 1 BILLION views in 8 YEARS. 1 Billion seconds is equal to 33 years. This means, that more than three almost four people, had to click play, every second of every day for 8 years. WOW!!!
I have seen this video many times. Actually had just finished watching it and your video was next in the queue. Instead of watching the video, I just watched you (which was easy to do) to see your reaction. Your expressions showed how powerful this cover is. I could tell you honestly haven't seen this video before or you are a great actress. 🙂
Lol. Yeah, I am DEFINITELY NOT an actress. I did enjoy this one though. Incredible song, incredible voice. Amazing.
amazing, perfectly controlled voice! one of the few covers, totally superior to the original.
You’re going on a journey that leaves you speechless.
What a fantastic cover ,best ever without doubt
This is a really great cover. Corvyx is also doing tha same cover, and its absolutely 💯. He is also doing a cover of My heart will go on, and its mind blowing. And he is a good example of never judge a book by its cover 😊
Love the sound of.
The ocean behind this song
I never tire of seeing peoples reaction to this song!
I love how engaged you are and react to your comments.
Props!
Cheers kind sir. There are some wonderful and kind people who have joined and I enjoy interacting. Plus this channel is all about the requests so I like to show my appreciation when people taken the time to comment. 🍻
Goosebumps. Goosebumps every time. Love it!
Thanks Duke.
My favorite rendition of this song. David Draimans voice is fantastic!
I love Simon and Garfunkel sing this and this cover is right up there , brilliant
Your reaction was the best ive seen for this song. No interruptions. You let us hear/listen too
I see this more as a post-apocalyptic setting with a touch of Mad Max.
@@fugawiaus Yes , Paul Simon is a genius
The best cover I've ever heard. He has a huge range on his voice for contrast check their other stuff like down with the sickness
Yes greatest cover
I liked watching your face and expressions as you listened to the song and visuals. You just joined a long list .."of WOW!"
Awesome... Fact: This version was constantly played in the Midwest when it debuted. Sadly, it became an instant classic to comprehend the PANDEMIC!!!
I was late to this party too. I love to listen to covers of great songs. Often they are terrible but you do come across some gems too. This is one of the very few that transcends the original. I was stunned when I first heard it about a year ago.
U said wow on the first syllable. Incredible
You don't listen to this song, you experience it.
Nobody mentions that gorgeous arrangement
The ship is taking the instruments to the people with the music - to end the silence.
It was really nice to see how this song emotionally connected with you.
Awe inspiring song…thank you for the heartfelt reaction. Keep’em coming!!
Listen to the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. Playing "the good the bad and the ugly"
It’s actually a song about the end of time. Some say it’s about WW3 . Original was done by Simon & Garfunkel
The way I saw this is the song is about post apocalypse... when people are moving about in the dark trying to get the old ways back and the singer is trying to get them to talk to and listen to each other... also the true impact is in the final lines "the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls,
And in the tenement halls... "
In other words look to what the silenced in the old world said.... graffiti. Some very profound thing have been said thru graffiti .. like Banksy and others... the only voice they had was spray cans but they were wise
It just feels good to listen..a fire is lit in ones soul..
On the Dutch tv show "Beste Zangers" (Best Singers) Henk Poort performed his take on this version of "The Souond of Silence" and I honestly can't decide which one I like better
Henk Poort singing Disturb's "Sound of Silence" or Disturbed performing it
If you haven't checked it out already, you definitely should
This cover gets me in the gut every single time. Corvyx also covered this and I have to say it's superb, worth a look and also his cover of My Heart Will go On. He's pretty awesome.
I found your channel today and subscribed to it today and I love disturbed version of sounds of silence.
Thanks John. 👋
@@SwiftReactions you are very welcome 😊
I'm 54 the first time I heard this version it was a 9/11 tribute the silence in the weeks after 9 11 was deafening nobody was really talking but everyone's face said the same thing sadness sorrow pain and rage to this day when I hear this song my face reads the same as it was on that day. disturbed and dave put in to that song what everyone in an entire country was feeling on 9/11 never forget and we still want answers
It's hard for anyone to truly appreciate this version of this song without listening to the original version done in the 70's by Simon and Garfunkel.
Excellent singer
They did a live version on Conan and it’s even better live. Must watch reaction
Historical Recording
I miss those days!
amazing , fun fact the one that he perfomace on the Conan show , he had a flu and he said hekept drinkin water and honey the whole day , and that perfomace live was even prettier , u should check it out ,
simon and garfunkle, 1960's 70's New York city, Vietnam war going on and song writers writing anti war songs that no one payed attention to. Graffiti on the subway wall and on tenement hall walls. Neon signs flashing messages and advertisements all around. People walking around without really interfacing with one another. A completely different world than today
The music will save the future generations
You should try *The Warning* - 3 sisters who David Draiman (lead singer of Disturbed) said gave him hope for the future of rock music. They are headlining a European tour now and will be in Japan for at least 3 shows. Try their new 'Automatic Sun' or 'Evolve' from their 2023 MTV VMA performance.
Seconded. Trust me. This is one rabbit hole you won't regret falling into. 🤘
I have done a reaction to Evolve. The copyright is holding it up but it should be available in the next fortnight.
@@SwiftReactions Ah, excellent! Be prepared to have The Warning Army flood it!
An excellent reaction - thanks.
Love the new vibe he gives it.
You should explore more of their music. Style aside, his voice is powerful
David's voice is magical! Band and video are killer as well!
Original ny Simon and Garfunkel.
Acapella by Pentatonix.
Great version of the song.
This is NOT their Norm. They often do Covers, and they are great. Oh, by the way, their Norm, DISTUBED is a HEAVY METAL Band. If you are interested to hear their Norm, listen to DISTURBED, Down with the Sickness. That is their Norm. Great Post.
David Draimans voice is awesome
Simon & Garfunkel understood subtlety: they gave us 'The Sound of Silence.'
Disturbed missed those lessons in nuance and finesse, and so produced 'The Bellowing Cacophony.'
The authentic song is about silence and significance.
The modern perversion is about roaring and chaos.
No doom .just truth
Your facial expressions mirrored my own.
Thanks for sharing.
