As we can see, if you plant ALL YEAR ROUND, you should probably not let your old roots stay in place because they won't get the time they really need to decompose. Better to put them in an actual 'Compost pile' where they will break down and later you can feed them back to your beds. Obviously, roots do the same thing as finely shredded paper... they _ball up!_ Not what you want! It's your garden DIG THEM OUT if that's what you determine you need to do. I, for one, ain't mad at ya! Be blessed!

I just saw the video of your urban food garden on ‘Exploring Alternatives.’
Your garden is an inspiration and you have a new follower.
We are in Southern Ontario and gradually working towards a similar setup. This year we’ve had a bumper crop of peaches, plums, tomatoes, garlic, parsley … I think you get the idea.
I’ll certainly be dropping by to see what’s happening in your backyard in future!

I had one of those black and yellow narly looking spiders is my rose bed. I even named him Freddie. He got pretty big. I don't love spiders, but they really help with keeping the grasshoppers and crickets under control. One of my house guests thought they were being 'helpful' 😢 and killed my 'Freddie'. 🫤

I like how you pulled a harvest out of your pockets. I remember going through my pockets and I pulled out tomato seeds, dried beans, pepper and a tiny carrot which I ate. Lots of laughter and crazy looks.

I'm so there with you regarding pulling up roots when I remove plants. Recently pulled up corn and found though they tend to be shallow rooted near stalks, smaller roots formed mats. After I removed all the corn roots and filled open areas and holes with compost, every single pepper planted near them in my raised bed began to flourish and produce buds. I plant my small 4x4 beds intensively and so there is never a fallow area. Like you, I don't have the luxury to allow roots to slowly decompose. Thank you for being you.
