when you make the eq cut dynamic, is that kind of like multiband compression where it only attenuates that frequency if it passes a certain threshold?
Yeah that’s right! I only set it to dynamic so that it only pulls down those frequencies when it needs to but it’s definitely not necessary
I mix using headphones and when I join the two tracks stereo from being hard panned left and right, they don’t sound as wide as before. Not sure if I’m doing it right.
Just realised I hadn’t toggled the stereo mono switch on nolly. Doh!
That’s a strange one. My first thought is that with logic when you join the tracks it will place them onto a mono track (even when you click stereo). Maybe that’s what happening? You might just need to click the little circle next to ‘input’ on the track inspector window? Or make sure that if there are still plugins on the track that they have all moved over to stereo instead of staying mono? That would be my first thing to try anyway!
Do you not use an impluse response loader? I was made to understand that was vital.
For the cabinet do you mean? I do use them yes, but the amp I used in this video has its own cabinet IRs that I really like. I’ll often use the Oversized Cali by GGD or if I want to flick through the hundreds of Cabinet IRs that I’ve bought over the years then I’ll use the Nad IR from Ignite Amps
What kind of guitar are you using to record this? I'm trying to follow you step by step but mine definitely doesn't sound like this at all
I’m using an LTD with an evertune bridge. The pick ups are EMG 81 and 85s however I have found that being perfectly in tune - like seriously perfectly in tune makes the biggest difference on your DI recording. Perhaps that’s the issue? When I’m recording guitars that have tuning issues it’s still possible to get a get recording, I just have to you keep retuning after every couple of takes and makes sure to intonate the guitar if it goes out of tune when going up the neck. Or worst case scenario tune to the fretted note/ chord when up the neck and then retune to open strings when back down if that makes sense?
Also, I’m dialling the tones in stereo which also makes things sound 100% better in my opinion. So I’ve consolidated the double tracked DIs by panning one take 100% left, the other take 100% right and converting them into 1 stereo file from there. I then run that stereo file into a stereo instance of the plugin and it makes the world of difference to the sound!

Don't discount good strings either. I was getting muddy kind of shite DI recordings from skinny top heavy bottom nickel strings... just switched to cobalt 10s and they sound SUPER bright and the DI recordings sound amazing. My guitar came with 10s, so perhaps the thicker gauges of the heavy bottoms was throwing off the intonation.
Tuning and gain staging were arguably the most important for me though. If you're using a tuner in a DAW, make sure to do it using the DI audio. Could just be placebo but when tuning I like to go to the neck pickup and turn the tone knob super low, seems to be more accurate tuning IMO.
Yeah man, totally agree! New strings and perfectly tuned! I actually did a video on this way back and everyone hated it lol. I don’t think a lot of people wanna hear that stuff but it’s so crucial!
@@TerryBeckleyRecordingI have the mark holcomb with EverTune and my DI doesn’t sound as bright and clear as yours, maybe I need some active pickups lol
