So you've shot your movie. You have the wrap party, recover the next day and then open your footage in your editing platform of choice...then your heart sinks. There's something wrong with your scene that amazingly NONE of the crew on set noticed. Either it's something in the shot that SHOULDN'T be there (a misplaced prop, one of the crew members' water bottles, somebody's reflection in a window) or it's something missing that SHOULD be there (a sign that appeared in one shot but not another, a disappearing prop).
These are called "goofs" and cinema is laden with them. Seriously, you'd be surprised just how many of them pop up even in multi-million dollar movies and how obvious they seem once pointed out.
But once they're baked into your shot, what do you do to fix them? Options are either to reshoot, edit around it or get a magician to make the mistake go POOF! Luckily, some mistakes are easier to fix than others.
Here is one example for you to see: A PSA for Bike Safety that shows a cyclist running through a stop sign. The producer contacted me and asked how difficult it would be to remove the stop sign so the shot would be usable. This video is the answer.
This PSA was produced by the folks at Synndicus. Кино
Thanks, Ben Affleck with a beard.
You are most welcome, sir! Now back to being Batman.
AMP8cinema I was looking for this comment
+AMP8cinema What I was going to say :P
+AMP8cinema More like Paul Rudd
you did not explain how to do it.
+chieduagain Yup, I did. As mentioned it is assumed that the viewer has general knowledge of things like rotoscoping first. If I went into great detail of each step of the process (including things like "Start computer" and "Open After Effects", then it would be a much longer video).
Ok put that in the title/description or you will make loose time to ppl. BTW thx!
Yeah, at least tag video as intermediate level.
Thank you for the vid. Can you point me towards a video that shows the in between? What I mean is one that shows step my step how to create these puzzle pieces with all the layers and then HOW TO roto scope etc? Thank you for your time!
Nick you have an agreeable on camera appearance. This vid tut is a good example of removing objects from a stationary, locked off camera. Personally, I have found denoising clips is almost essential before making composites. Later, noise can be applied to the whole comp, or just to the patches.
Question: what about a tut on moving objects within a composition, and the removal/ modification of selected objects within that moving composition?
Peter Solomon That would be a good idea, but I find that there are already many tutorials out there that cover this so I usually don't try to repeat a lot of covered ground.
How can someone like me send you a scene to check out?
Really great work Nick. Good cloning and rotoscoping tips simply stated. Way to go man!
Thanks, David!
Hi Nick what software are you using this was great thanks
This video is not gor beginners ... what is Robyn Matte ? how did u place it ... ??
So does Adobe Premier Pro can do this? Or only After Effects?
I thought you were going to say the reflection of the camera crew in her helmet. Are you able to remove that type of thing?
How much would you have charged for that? Thanks
Nick, I used a Tricaster Mini along with (2) DSLR t3i cameras. The tricaster mini uses the image of the camera to record what you are film. Hitting the record button and sd cards are not needed for the Canon Camera. Camer just needs to stay on. So I cleared the camera the display (time, scale, WB, ect.) so I thought. The white square in the middle of the screen which is the AF white box is still showing but I didnt notice. So all my footage has the white box in the footage. How can I remove that box?
James JR Oh, boy...that's not going to be a fun thing to get rid of. Is the shot locked off? If not, you may be in a world of hurt trying to remove that.
It's a crowd scene and a person speaking in a conference room
James JR It sounds like that will not be an easy task. Is the camera moving or locked off? Is there a lot of movement around where the AF box is? Tweet me a screengrab and it might be easier for me to see. twitter.com/merc_media

amazing work Nick, good to see you extending a hand to the filmmakers in need of help!
nick
Thanks for the love! More to come.
Nick, I got an issue with one of my scenes. Its a smudge on the lens (probably a thumbprint) Which shows on most of the footage for that scene. Any ideas on how to fix something like this? or any known software? Any help is greatly appreciated man! I subscribed too!
Smudge on the lens is a much more complicated fix, as it is not a part of the environment but follows wherever the lens is pointed. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. An experienced enough VFX artist could help you fix it, but it would be time-consuming and expensive for you. Think of how badly you want the shot fixed first.
Thank You. Would you know of any tutorials that could show me how to pull it of? I'd like to atleast attempt to fix it myself(I do have some pretty decent experience in AE) before I consider doing a reshoot, which I don't want to do, because it was an expensive scene to shoot.
This is exactly what I was after. Im shooting an in car scene with multiple cameras. The 2nd camera is in shot of the first camera so this will enable me to delete the camera from the shot. Thanks
+ben rancie Glad it helps. Good luck!
+ben rancie Wow. Deleting a camera, whose angle is still visible throught the video? Awesome, it feels like magic, somehow XD
I've done stuff like this a few times but I think it would be in your viewer's best interests to know HOW to make the rotoscoped mattes. As it is now, it's like "Step one, erase image, step two apply matte. step 3 THE END!" So basically you're explaining it to people who already know how to do this. And if they already know how to rotoscope out different sections of the body it is likely that they know how to do everything else as well (I personally would have only rotoscoped one chunk of her). You also never explained why your image covering the stop sign was in a whole buncha different layers unless I missed something.
Thanks for the feedback. Is this Joe or Dave?
I hesitated to call this a tutorial because I was aiming to do a general overview of this process, not necessarily a step-by-step tutorial. It was intended for either A) VFX folk who already have a firm grasp on things like rotoscoping; and B) Non-VFX folk (like some producers or directors) who aren't interested in the details but just want to understand the process better.
Nick Montgomery Gotcha. Yeah I think "overview" sounds good. To me it's like something I might show a client "Here's how something like this is done". As for whether I'm Joe or Dave I have absolutely no idea. :)
Game Sack I agree. Will title differently in future videos.
Ben Affleck
Video audio isn't very well equalized. gunshot sound and start is much to high in comparison to voice.
Excellent tutorial, Nick. big ups from Venezuela.
Thanks, my man! Glad you got something out of it.
What should I do if the background is moving but the object I want to remove is not moving at all?
As in the camera is moving and the object is staying still? Slightly more difficult. You need to track the camera motion, remove the object with similar steps I used in the video and make the "patch" move with the camera movement.
If the camera is moving much in Z-space...well then that get's real messy.
Ok thank you for your help.
5:58 what is that mask ? is it effect? or ordinary pen tool? how make that mask.. also 6 :06 how did you do that... i want to know T T
+DONGKEY1 Simple mask made with pen tool. Track or animate the mask as she moves.
how to add tv
i shoot a girl but in the hair is a objekt but she moves. with the stamp it is no good. how i can remove it? Do you have a email?
use a rotobrush
So did you move the mask frame by frame? or just tracked Robin?
+Dhruv1223 For this example I manually tracked her, but you can do a combination of both: tracking and manually animating the mask.
Ok cool! Thanks Ben ;)
Ben Affleck does post production? Awesome!
Why did you use multiple masks to track Robyn, as opposed to one giant one?
In hammering out my own work I just answered my own question. Thanks for this video!
T3chnicolor Glad to hear you got it sorted out! Just in case for anyone else reading the question...several simpler shapes are much easier to animate over time compared to one large, complex shape.
You should rename this video "Do you really want to remove something from a shot? Let me talk about why you might not really want to do that for a few minutes, and then start talking about creating a patch, that is not applicable to your shot at home, before I eventually decide to not actually show you how to remove an object"
I was going to call it that but figured it wasn't good enough for SEO.
Nick Montgomery Ahh, I see. Good point. As you were.
Hahahaha 😂😭
I'm trying to shoot a dinosaur movie with a pylon behind...yep I need the editing!
Removing a pylon? It can be done! Good luck and happy shootin'.
Thx
How can I message you about it?
+W1ll1ngh4m About what?
Nick Montgomery I am having a little trouble removing an object underneath me. I want it to seem as I am floating. How can I do this?
use mocha to rotoscope and remove object
Well done!
+MidasTouchPictures Thank you!
Wouldn't it be easier to remove the bicyclist?
+William Cousert Not really. Plus that wasn't what I was hired to do.
Nice video bro
+daмeleon Thanks!
Nice beard bro.
JArtz - Designer Thanks. Grew it myself.
how to remove stunt pads from geound
+Asim Cent All depends on the shot. As I mentioned in the video, show the shot to a vfx artist and get an accurate answer from them.
Thanks 😊
forget the stop sign, can you remove the biker?
+Propergander Productions If I wanted to, yes.
but how lol?
+Propergander Productions Using many of the same techniques applied in removing the stop sign. Same type of problem; same solution.
ok i want to remove a woman who is walking in front the camera in the park, the camer is also panning,
Are you asking me for advice on how to work on a specific shot? Because it's difficult to do that without seeing it first.
But you're going to need a clean bg plate (an image of what's behind the woman) and you'll need to track the camera movement to match.
HI NICK.... F A N T A S T I C ! ! !
get her ass out there on that bike to reshoot that scene
1:54
"bikiling safety"
umm *what*?
did you mean cycling?
+SantaGaming Nope, meant "biking".
yeah but the way you said it was like between biking and cycling - "bikiling"
I'm actually saying "bike lane safety" there. Could have chosen my words better.
Wouldn't it have been less work to roto out the background biker? No need to play Frankenstein with parts of the shot.
Yes it would have, but he is an actor and so could not be removed. The client wanted him to stay in.
Oh, I thought he was a random.
Jesus remove the beard and here goes Ben Afflack hahay u look so much like him man.
It is nice, but I relly need a true tutorial. :-)
Thanks, Miroslav. I was going for an overview of the process for non-vfx artists to get an idea of what goes into this type of work. Sorry it doesn't go into enough detail for you, but there are many tutorials out there that explain each step more. Hope you find what you're looking for.
it has nothing to do with the tutorial...
What has nothing to do with the tutorial? Sorry if this wasn't what you were looking for, but I thought the title aptly describes the material.
Nick Montgomery Im just saying, tutorial is something that will explain step by step what to do, so anyone is able to repeat it. after your "tutorial" i can only say, : wow, mhm.. nice..
Well until your were asked to remove something behind a pompom or grasses, then you shall scream.
