Been waiting for the weather and legs to make this a bikepacking trip, and was immediately confronted with water availability. Aiming for an easy-paced 3 days out of LA, and was planning on two bottles and a 3 liter hydration pack. We'll see how the dirt detour from Tumble Inn to Papa's goes.

Is the whole length of this passable by bike? I just heard of this road on a Huell Howser episode and found a section has been gated since 2005. Pictures of the washouts don't look awful but they're old photos.

They actually did a lot of work on the road a couple of years ago and Vic did it last time on his Pinarello. Still there's a couple of sections to watch your speed, but 25s are totally doable.

@@GravelBikeCalifornia Thanks for that! Ihave a slick tire mountain tandem and would like to ride this with my wife. Road surface is of no concern, I just want to confirm the road is there end-to-end.

@@wantahertzdonut Yeah. Most people do the loop through Lake Hughes since there's no water along the way. I typically ride it on 32s.

You think will be fine if I do this ride in a regular road bike ?

You definitely want to go on the skinnier side for this big loop. I rode w/ 32s, but road bikes work too. You won't have to dismount on a road bike, but take a few small parts carefully.

I've done it on a road bike with 25mm tires......a road bike is ideal/preferable for this ride.

Yes. It's not perfect, but last time one of our guys did it on his F10
