As a kid I know about this so when my mom buys a map for my school I ask her whether Gall peters map or Mercator she says Mercator I get mad So I got clay and put it on countries then put the clay on paper and traced it and also the ocean so it will look accurate
These are called projections and my favorite is the Winkel Tripel map, it’a more of an oval then a flat paper but it shows the true size AND shape of countries, but it still isn’t perfect, no map is perfect, that’s why I prefer to use a globe instead

The reason the Gallpeters map is really distorted when you drew it was because if you look at the earth at one side you don’t see the whole top unless you at the top. So that’s why russia and Greenland looks really distorted but in reality it’s correct.
