  • In a previous video I told you that - because Hungary does not yet use the Euro - you will have to change money in Budapest. I showed you several dos and don'ts of doing this. You might be asking yourself: "Why not just take out money from an ATM using my home bank's card?" Well, in this video, I will show you how the Euronet network of ATMs (those that you will see everywhere in touristy areas of Budapest) will try to cheat you with several tricks. Be careful with them! In this video I tell you what to do and what not to do!
    Two tricks in particular:
    (1) Euronet ATMs want you to take out way too much cash, much more than you will need!
    (2) They let you choose whether to be charged in Hungarian Forints or in your home currency for the withdrawal and will try to convince you to use their conversion rate!
    Bottomline:
Whenever you are offered "with conversion" and "without conversion" you should ALWAYS choose the "without conversion" option!
    My tips:
    (1) Don't take out too much cash!
    (2) Do NOT choose "with conversion"!
    (3) Avoid Euronet ATMs
    (4) Use bank affiliated cash machines instead

I am a proud local Hungarian living in Budapest.
I was born and have lived in this beautiful city, Budapest for decades. I am in love with it - and not because I haven’t seen anything else. I am a seasoned traveller and I have also spent many years living abroad. However, my heart (and wife, and jobs and goulash soup and lángos) have pulled me back to my birth town. I love this city and know it inside out.
If you are fed up with the formal (and often wrong) recommendations of guide books, then follow my channel to find advice from a real local. I give you practical tips, show you cool spots and help you avoid tourist traps.
I live and love Budapest, I want to share my tips with you.

If you look carefully at 3:17 of the video, you will see that they will charge you 21,95 euros for a withdraw of 5000 florin (today rate is 15,31 euros ...). However, if you refuse the conversion, they will add 1280 florin at the amount. I don't know if its a fix ammount or if it's a pourcentage of the amount you withdraw, but 1280 of commission for a 5000 florin withdraw is huge. So, unless your realy desparate, you should really avoid those atm.

Wow, that's news even for me, and I thought I knew all the tricks of these euronet crooks.... You are right, they should be outright avoided and bank affiliated ATMs should be used only. Thanks a lot for your comment!!

Another excellent video with great practical advice. After watching this video I have to ask though...don't any of the Hungarian Banks have their own ATM's? In most countries, the bank ATM's are the best bet.

How ‘cashless’ is Budapest now? Will be there later in the year and wondering how much cash I need or whether I actually need any. Where I am now (the UK) I use Apple Pay everywhere, even at small market stalls in the villages in the countryside, have not used any cash in over a year. Could I get by there for a month just using mobile payments or a debit card?

Hello, How to fix it? If you press Accept conversion (right side) because today I had press on the right-hand side But the money doesn't come out of the ATM. But my local account sent me a message saying the money has been deducted.

Thanks, great idea, I will definitely do one video on this. Probably I will be hesitant to suggest particular places, but I will give my thoughts on which area of the city to target.

Bank ATMs are worst because they have withdrawal limit. Euronet doesn't have limits. As saying goes: cheat me once shame on you, cheat me twice shame on me. So I prefer to be charged any kind of fee only once. Withdrawal limits are old tricks traditional banks use to get as much fees as possible from you. Of course if you don't use cash and use cards, cards will charge you fee for every purchase which is crazy (euro cards for non-euro purchases). So cash is still a king when traveling. Use money exchange booths and cash.

I went to mondocon (which is now my fav anime convention ever) in july and oktober, made a ton of great friends, going again in march, can't wait, but for god's sake I used one of these fuckers in July.
I hate it and feel stupid. Never again. XD
These things are like a fucking tumor. BTW, they infected other EU countries as well. Not just Hungary/Budapest LOL
