Whoever did the sound design for new Steam (Steam Deck/SteamOS 3.0/New Big Picture) is a legend. These sound effects add so much personality to the UI and makes it so satisfying to navigate. It feels like I'm operating an alien spaceship.
I've not even put a finger on a Steam Deck yet and there is something nostalgic about these sounds. They reminds me of sounds of older Windows versions, older consoles like PS1-3, the original Xbox-360, and the GameCube. The sound design for the Deck just radiates the same energy I got from the sounds of the platforms I grew up with.
These sound like something you would hear on a futuristic alien mothership, but everyone onboard is calm and friendly towards themselves and other species. It sounds alien, but fun.
Currently writing a blog post about the power of music and sound design in consoles, and I'm using the Steam Deck as an amazing example. Thank you for uploading this! I've linked to it so other people can hear the Deck :D
I literally got mine in September of 2022 and it’s already making me nostalgic, it’s even making me remember fondly of my sophomore year in high school that I didn’t even finish yet 💀
When I first got my windows 11 PC I kept hearing the friend join and friend online sound and I couldn't figure out where the fuck that sound was and where it was coming from. But in the back of my head I was like "that sounds like something you'd hear from Steam" I was right
Never had steam deck but at 0:23 imo I think for achievements they could of did more of a jingle like how Xbox does it as it makes it more satisfying. Everything else I’m fine with from what I’ve seen and heard.
Startup is good, most is good... But uh, what the heck is going on with the strange "beeps" as you go between things? Like in the background I hear another sound on top of the main sounds...

start up sounds are a dying breed, it's sad
They did that intentionally, I think.
it reminds me the 3ds for an unknown reason
@@GamerseeeOMG Screw ARM, x86 makes for some cool mobile devices. Valve should give us an x86 Linux smartphone that games.
It reminds me of Windows 7 sounds mixed with some PS2 bios vibes tbh, i got the chills

valve did a good job with these sounds.
shame on you nintendo
This is so true. Specially for Nintendo Switch
Yeah this is true. Nintendo used to have very good sounds for their devices, its a shame that they made the switch os very basic and dead
1:31 I like that little jingle every time you go into a game
Yeah
Kinda like the PS3 (before 2009)
0:23 my oddly favourite one
Achievement sound, but it’s epic

September ‘22 gang!
I grew up with the 3DS and Wii U and somehow I don’t even feel nostalgia. Probably because I never stopped playing.

As a owner of the steam deck I’ve only heard a few of these I didn’t know that there were this many sound effects on the deck
Most of them are unused
Yeah, honestly the Deck is weirdly lacking in sound effect variety so using these would be fantastic.
2:25 = Nostalgia
I thought that somebody messaged me on steam and I went to check xD
@@bpnbeckeroo lol
my god, these sounds have way more personality than most software
Got my Steam Deck on February 2024 and it already sounds nostalgic 🥲
you know the sound design is good when deja vu nostalgia hits.
0:09 = my favourite startup sound
These sounds are soooo nice... wish I had a steam deck D:
I’m saving up for one right one! :)
i went for a reservation for mine
I’ll buy you one
@@johnsonpatrick80 okay buy me one
you can use steam big picture mode, it's pretty similar
Most of these sounds are eventually going to come to every PC that can run Steam with the new Big Picture mode updates coming soon
Favourable sound design for Steam Deck!
fun fact: some of these sound effects are used for steams Meta Quest PCVR streaming app Steam Link.
You know you hear mostly the game launch on your tv.
I’m late but they changed the Steam Deck Achievement sound sadly.

Im getting dreamcast vibes.
So much for future gaming
Idk why but my dog very likes this video

Personally my favorites 😌
None of them are used 💔
@@scottcaramel I don't have a steam deck but that's so sad to hear seriously
funny, these effects (especially the clicks) are very switch-esque
how do you even make these sounds. So comfy
By ripping them out of the steam deck
@@utfigyii5987 I meant, how does Valve make these sounds
m4a sounds… assuming that was from the old big picture mode, that’s nostalgia

Just bookmarking my favorite sound 2:18
I would turn that thing off and on just to hear the startup sound every now and then.
Is there sound achievement on steam deck!!? When you unlock achievements
seems like the link to the download is offline.
Reminds me of HALF LIFE 🥺🥲
missing the startup file?
Do we know what the other startup sounds are used for?
probably earlier ones used in development

Pretty sure the decks os isn't special as it's basically a custom arch version of Linux just like manjaro and others just built for gaming
Name one operating system that’s actually built for gaming other than steamOS.
