You also can't overlook the fact that you can record a whole sound and decide later that the tone doesn't mesh right. No need to re-record. Just change the tone.
or u could do DI tracks? pretty much every equipped studio has the ability to do so...
Aaron Johnson Yes! This is what I often do with my Zoom R8.
a lot of people take a dry track track from a di box (probs the most common method) and can then re-amp it later. This is exactly what you described in your original comment but u can run the dry track through real tube amps.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DI_unit
That's a process called reamping, which can be achieved either by a DI box or a reamping box.
Tyler in 2017:"I am not in the postition to spend 9833$ on a little vintage amp."
Tyler in 2020:"I Bought a $5,000 Guitar Pedal-Does it Sound ANY GOOD?"
You cant go wrong with focusrite and guitar rig 5 fellow budget players
Add a Squier Affinity Tele in the stack and you got me
@@hjubris squier affinity tele? pff just add a chinese 7ender or a chilean freeman strat copy and a 5 watt practice amp and u got me
@@hjubris u guys just named my rig 😂
Thanks, Tyler, for this review. When you go online and read these gear presentations and comparisons, there's so much elitism and hate towards solid state amps, digital amps and emulations. It's like the whole world can afford a bunch of different amps and using an affordable "copy" is a crime or a dumb thing to do.
I'm from Brazil, everything imported here is ridiculously expensive and we gotta make the best with what we got, always. I own an Epiphone, a Marshall MG and, now, a Zoom G5n and I'm pretty happy with them. Many musicians here, that are better than me, can't afford even these "inexpensive" stuff. And I'm grateful with what I've got, even if it's not "the real thing".
Alex Damaceno That's the spirit, make good music with whatever you have, that should be a musician's focus. Gears are the tool, not the purpose.
Damn straight, even "low tier" stuff is expensive as hell in Brazil
Same here dude, having a pod hd500x in Brazil is expensive as f****! Always get compliments for audience while I play in bars. Modeling is the future
Kiko didn't seem to have a problem with that when he started out way back before amp sims.
The hate towards those alternatives comes from guitar neckbeards who bought those expensive tube amps, they need a reason to defend their huge purchase. Same shit with iPhone owners trying to convince people that they can't be happy with a samsung smartphone
Is your outro music done with AMP sims or real amp ?
If you can’t make the sims sound good, maybe the sims aren’t the problem.
AMEN TO THAT!!!!!!
Yup spot on bro!
Idk about that some got some really shitty quality
SHIT WHAT A SLAP
You can defiantly make a sim sound good but you can still make a good tube amp sound and feel fantastic. The sims always seem a little off and not quite in the pocket with the latency but that has more to do with the feel in the song not tone per se. that what usually gives them away in the song.
Sounds like you are going in way too hot on the Tweed. Are you using it in the Unison slot? If not, back the input gain all the way down on the Apollo.
I accept the word simulator especially when it tries to sound like a specific amp that exists outside of the computer, but I disagree with the idea of it not being an amplifier. I understand how the word “real” is being used, but real amplifiers were made with the tech available at the time, and using modern tech to achieve a great sound that you can record or perform with is just as “real.” For me, a real amp is a tool that allows you to create the music in your head and convey what you have to say. Why pass it up if it fulfills your vision because of the process?
It amplifies sound, you cant get more amp than that. Instead of a box with a speaker doing the amplifying its your computer instead. I guess the biggest difference is that all the processing is done digitally in a computer, which requires a certain amount of time to convert the analog signal into a digital one and back, which will always be a source of quality loss. But it doesnt sound bad to my ears, the tones in this video are just heavenly.
Imho it isn't really important whether or not these emulations are accurate (unless you have a very specific need for that amp) because even if they're not they give you some great sounds.
The software I use on Linux isn't that close on some amp models but with a bit of tweaking it sounds amazing anyway.
And those used in this video are awesome.
Fact is, they could sounds pretty similar alone. But it needs to be considered in context.
In case of overdriven tone (classic rock ish, not high-gain), I found that the emulation I used (S-Gear, Guitar Rig et some UAD) don't take EQs as well as real amps. Which makes a use difference in a mix. Convenient but definitely different on the end results.
That lick at 2:14 made love to my ears
A highly versatile and great sounding guitar amp sim is S-Gear from Scuffham Amps. Mike Scuffham brought a lot of expertise from Marshall and designed this great SW. It is especially good for vintage sounds.
I use the Focusrite Scarlet interface for a fraction of the cost and it sounds amazing, also I use Amplitude 4 for guitar sims and they sound amazing- and have a great range from Fender to Marshall to Mesa and beyond. There are great cheaper options. Side note... the shadow caused by your hat was very distracting.
I just want someone to explain how to connect things to get output from an speaker. To judge how good an emulation would be I need to hear it just like I do it from a tube amp. Could you based on you interface?
That sounds just awesome for me Tyler!
I am in the process of building my home studio. I have been heavily researching amp sim software, i.e. Amplitube, Positive Grid, and others. I see you really like the UA interface and amps. It sounds fantastic on your video. A lot of people don't have a clue what the original amps sounded like.
For the player, probably not. For the audience, they won't notice at all if you dial it right.
I used to be so smug about tone, then I realized that a majority of people dont even appreciate tone or know what you're talking about. When playing live, so much is going on with drums, bass, etc that only other guitarists would be able to single out your tone in their ears to appreciate it. Everyone else just thinks it sounds great.
yourbuddykevin yeah. I think most people spend too much time and money on getting the right tone. it's not really that important atleast in a live setting.
@@yourbuddykevin Yeah, it's kinda like working out. First, you do it to impress girls, but after a while you realize that nobody gives a shit, and start doing it for yourself. No one cares about your tone, the only one it matters to is you.
Very cool and informative! Thanks Tyler.👍🏻
I love modelers. I run through a Firehawk FX modeling pedal and it has everything I need and much more, and it sounds fantastic. Run it through a clean amp at home, run it direct to PA at band practice and gigs. My amps never leave the house. Can record direct as well. And I have gotten compliments on my sound from tone snobs. As for feeling the amp.. meh... while it is cool to feel some huge cabinets pushing air, it is not something I really care about. Going to in-ear monitors anyway.
Who cares if a model of a particular amp sounds exactly like the real amp? If it sounds good, it sounds good. And the stuff I have played through sounds really good. And I don't even have the high end stuff.
If you want real amps, that's fine. Have at it. But this works for me and many pros are doing it as well. You are seeing less and less amps on tour these days. Even some shows that you see amps on stage, they are not being used, they are there for looks alone. If you kook behind the amp you will often find a Kemper or Helix, or Fractal, and nothing is even plugged into the amp.
I definitely liked the sound of the Friedman plugin!
This interface looks great! I might consider it. I've had my eyes on Positive Grid's BIAS FX for a while, but this could easily become my choice for a pre-amp.
Computers can generate video that looks more real and vivid than real life. So of course they can make gorgeous guitar tones too!
I dunno why but that Damage Control riff always makes me wanna murder kittens
Nice demo Tyler. I bought the Fender Mustang III modeling amp a while back. It has a lot of the same capabilities as your Apollo Twin, but also is an amp with a very large sound. I'm wondering what your take is on the advantages of the Apollo Twin over a modeling amp such as the Fender. Thanks!
Do i get all theese plugins if i buy this soundcard?
No.
It also makes kittens wanna murder you, probably.
I just love listening to you play dude. I wish I had enough time to get that good! Keep it up man!
Thanks, Tyler. Definitely a game changer, and I likely would've never known about this if it weren't for you making this video. Time to start savin' mah pennies!
Thanks for this. IT could really help in playing at lower volumes, like you mentioned. What speakers are you playing out of?
That finish on your strat is gorgeous
I have a question for you folks using amp sims. I record direct guitar into my focusrite scarlett 18i8 into my macbook pro. If I record just the DI guitar there is little to no noise from the guitar. However, when I turn on an amp sim, and turn up the gain to even mild breakup or crunch levels, I can hear electronic noise that is being introduced into my tone. This is mostly masked (although it still drives me crazy personally) when I play, but is always present with sustained notes.
It sounds very unprofessional to me and would love to know a way to remedy this issue.
Furthermore, I suspected it maybe my guitar or guitar cable so I unhooked those from the audio interface and the same issue occurs. The preamps are pretty much dead silent by themselves until the amp sim is turned on on the channel that is being monitored. Then you can hear the computer noise in the background as the gain is increased on the amp sim. This does not seem like a grounding issue to me as it doesn't have the 60 cycle hum sound. More like the noise floor of the computer is present in the recordings. Also, I have used a gate prior to the amp sim. While this gets rid of the noise when I'm not playing, the problem still stands that notes that are being held out or sustained have the electronic noise bleeding into them.
I'm not hearing this when the notes/chords are being held out with higher gain settings in the video above, so I wonder how this can be remedied.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
love learning from you. guitar licks and theory and gear too. one of your main points about the amp simulators was that you can use those instead of spending tons of money on an actual amp. I really like that idea, but how much did you spend on the audio interface and the plugins and the speakers? did you have to purchase different amp sim plugins individually? a general cost comparison between a given amp vs a setup of a simulated one would be super helpful. info like that would help me know whether an amp simulator would even be attainable for a poor musician (I am definitely one). I have a computer and crappy speakers, but how much do I need to save to get something like what you're talking about? thanks for your channel. keep up the great work!
Jim Smith the UA interfaces are top quality, but if you're on a budget you can definitely buy a Focusrite Scarlett and it'll be totally fine (around €150 or less). Then you need a pair of headphones or near field monitors. In my opinion the cheapest solution is a pair of Samson SR headphones (less than €50), they are quite decent. Otherwise a good pair of monitors will cost you around €500. Last but not least you need the modeler! I personally use Positive Grid Bias Desktop wchich will cost you around €200, but will give you almost any amp you need with lots of options to create a nice tone. It might be lower quality the the UA BE-100 simulator, but we are talking about two different planets cost-wise..
So in a nutshell it could be €150 + €50 + €200 = €400 and you're good to go, with a very good tone for the home guitarist.
thank you!! I will check into those. thanks for being specific. that gives me a great avenue to research. cheers!
There are some definite cool stuff you can do with, and advantages of this technology. Though it's not quite there yet i'd say, something about the clipping and breakup on the Tweed setting in particular but the rest had it too was a bit harsh for me, which i find is typical with plug in simulators... it might just be the placebo effect... though I think they sound reasonably good otherwise, I this harshness is more to do with the lack of recording an actual speaker with an actual microphone, less so than the technology failing to replicate the breakup of the amp, having that speaker movement, especially captured by a physical microphone rounds out that brittleness and gives it a more organic tone. even DI ing an actual amp can make it sound harsh compared to what comes out of the speaker.
another amp sim I would highly recommend any guitarist check out, (and would defiantly recommend over any software) is the Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 Tube Amp Emulator Pedal, it's an all analogue pedal, that can be used in front of an amp as a pre-amp, or distortion pedal of sorts, or you can use it in front of a DI signal direct into an audio interface, check it out, it's very versatile and honestly the best amp sim/distortion i've heard short of an actual tube amp... it's a fun pedal !
I haven't used my amps in two years, which is when I first got Amplitube. It's very easy, especially if you travel for work like I do. I play everyday in my hotel rooms, in my music room at home, etc.. no need for sound proofing my music room, etc. Just plug in to my laptop, my headphones and my guitar and I set and good to go.. and my amplitube has many different amp heads, cabs, pedals, racks etc. can't carry that around everywhere, nor would I have room in my music room for all that gear. This sounds great, I record and multi track on my amplitube as well. once you spend a lot of time to really test and hear out the different settings etc..
Tweed amps have a characteristic grind that is associated with cranked 6V6 power tubes - they always sound fuzzed out or ready to fizzle out. Modern guitar players will probably say it sounds like ass, because in my opinion, we've become accustomed to preamp-driven tone rather than power-amp driven tone. My guess is because we rarely get opportunities to crank our 50-watt or 100-watt heads too often, and we simply don't know what power tubes sound like... so when we hear a vintage amp like a Tweed Deluxe of course it will "sound like shit."
I agree with what you said, although I personally just am not a big fan of Fender amps, though I do like tweed and Blues Jr. I like my Orange. I absolutely love power amp distortion, but mostly with higher gain stuff, or tiny breakup with clean, but not a fan of purely power amp distortion. Orange delivers. Orange has less clean headroom in exchange for good power amp distortion at reasonable volumes. It's the reason people like Orange for classic rock (though things like Blues Jr. is also great).
Interesting, I can see this happening to a few people I know.
For me it just comes down to not liking fuzzy tones. I hate fuzz pedals. I like my high gain tones to sound clean, if that makes any sense
This outro jam is pretty amazing! :)
Awesome tones dude! Do you have the JMP and Plexi ones too? Because those can get some great EVH, Randy Rhoads, Satriani, and 70's/80's rock tones with the right settings!
Great Job Tyler!
That cover of castles made of sand was so beautiful
Glad you put out this video. Really great stuff. It sounds a little to me like the guitar stuff is peaking though. Is that just me?
Hi, I love your videos. I am not sure if I understood. What software are you using? Did it come with you interface? How do you feel this software compares with a unit like Helix or headrush when it comes to recording? Thanks, greeting from Illinois.
YES!!!! It's only $1500!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
It's awesome that you gave us some options...like maybe one decent free one. We're not all RUclips millionaires ya know....
Great video, hey can I use a mixer with USB for my audio input. Or do I have to uses a Scarlett 2i2?
I play my guitar through GarageBand (I'm sure Logic Pro would work the same). Would there be an advantage to getting a simulator?? Or do I pretty much have every thing I need in Garageband???
Will a pair of Yamaha HS5's do it in terms of recording, or is 5" speaker simply too small for guitar? (There are also 6,5" and 8" models but I'll have to save a more to get those.)
Tyler, you use these for recording and demoing for RUclips, but would you ever use amp simulation in a live setting? I know there are a handful of artists out there that pretty much plug directly from a POD into the PA, for example.
Sorry , the Default sound at beginning Sounds DEFINETLEY Not Good in my Ears .
Really , THAT is a good Amp sound for you ???
Jimi Hendrix i didnt like it either but thats how the amps sound like in real life too
Mischa Tietema uh, no. Only Neil Young gets close to that with his Deluxe. Most of the Eagles guitar tones are Deluxes
That's the sound of a mic'ed up amp... Youre used to either hearing an amp in a room or after EQ and processing
I like marshall amp sound
but your pc speakers would affect the tone that you hear or does decent monitor speakers resolve this?
Alan_ I think that a decent set of headphones could help with hearing tonality at a much more refined level.
I'm sure that default speakers from your computer do affect tone but I'm not sure about better speakers in particular. I'm just more for a good set of cans if I'm concerned with fine tuning tonality versus speakers.
Alan_ I know it defeats the point, but you can plug many amps into a computer to use as a speaker
Josh XMS it doesn't defeat the purpose, let's say you have a good speaker in your combo, but the preamp is shit. you can use the speaker
Get proper studio speakers. I have them and they let you hear the sound completely natural. PC speakers don't do that. Plus my speakers are 260 watts, compared to 15 for the PC speakers.
SuicidalShoe la que te
Tbh, for my apartment a kemper is ideal. For playing small gigs, ideal. Got a request? easy to change amps and get a similar tone.
So do i need to buy the plug in or is there software i can buy and just plug into my laptop?
So the pedals are part of the modeling too I take it? The delay in the last playing example sounded great. Does it have most any pedal you could want that you can place anywhere in the chain and fiddle with, etc?
Do you think the Apollo could reduce latency compared to the AD converters that are in my Zoom L-12 mixer (with USB)? I love my Amplitube 4 and other keyboard VSTs but hey, latency is always, always making me go back to using a real amplifier... even if it gets down to
love your channel Tyler watch every video
I tried lots of digital amp sims. Some of them are really good (Amplitude and ReValver) but even the best ones don't work for every situation at least not with my setup. It might be my crappy m-audio fast track interface but amp sims just don't sound right to me at least most of the time. They sound like digital guitar processors at best. I finally bought a marshall combo amp with tubes (DSL5C), really happy with the tone. The only problem is recording them. So there you go: Crappy amp sim tone with easy recording or great marshall tone with difficult recording at home...
Oh nike sb. Do you skate?
Nice hat and good video!
But what about the latency? Isn't there some sort of lag. BTW I love the nitro satin finish on ur strat
For the guitar plugins, do they already come loaded in the Apollo twin or do you have to purchase them separately?
So it's an interface that comes with its own simulation software? Also, have you tried Bias Amp or the Kemper, or any others like that?
Tyler, do you have any opinions on Bias FX or other bias programs? Btw thanks for your daily videos, I don't know how you do it but they are a bright point of my day every day.
Hey Tyler, what scales were you using, for example for "The Breakup"? You had some really nice sounding licks there!
Would you choose a software simulation over a decent quality multi-fx pedal? Thanks.
Hey! may be do a video explaining (logic) amp models and cabs and best combinations (apart form pre-sets)
I dont get this. So are all these guitar amps build intro the Apollo?? or which software is he using??
I was waiting for this a long time ago!!.. this was really helpful, thank you
my favorite is "heavy gated riffs C", it's got this rich tone I love
well this interface is too expensive for me :/.. I have a Line6 V30 modelling amp with many emulated amps and presets and a USB connection for recording and it's doing it for me, but I'm wondering if I can use their software with just my amp using ASIO drivers
If you have a DAW like reaper ($60)and a decent interface (behringer UMC22 $40)
There's loads of free VST plugins , Nick crow, Le Pou, TXE ,including loopers (Tonecraver, regen)
You can get a great tone by spending virtually nothing if you do your
OWN research,
DON'T listen to anyone's opinion,(real amps always sound better bla bla bla)
This doesn't apply if your recording professionally, but for home practice this is invaluable advice.
hey man, any tips on the best DAW to mix in guitar an create a track around that ? (you mentioned Reaper) I've just started with a scarlet solo, but ableton is scaring the shit out of me.
pls make a video with ways to make great metal lead guitar
plsssssssssssssssssssss
Have you done any vid reviews on Line 6 Helix, or Boss GT-1000 or GT-100? Thanks, Richard
That first fender amp was awesome!
Hi Tyler, im a long time user of guitar rig 5, but I see so many products out there that seem better nowadays. Can you please tell me some options to check out? Please bear in mind I'm a father and in a budget :) . Thanks in advance
Can we get an updated video on go to software? Free and paid by chance?
Do you plug the interface directly to your studio monitors or to another kind of amplifier/PA? Thanks for your attention and keep up the good work! Could anybody help me on that? What would be better, monitors or a PA?
do you know any effect simulators that are good for Death & black metal? been using my actual amp for a while and recently decided to stop that and use what I got but the effects aren't really that interesting from Hardcore that comes with FL studio.
some of these effects could be useful for other projects though.
Do the plugins come with effects? E.g. that Friedman lead preset had delay on it - did it come with the plugin?
hey taylor I just wanted to ask I bought your modern rock technique course and it all of a sudden just stopped working nothing loads or anythinh
How do you get the noise output without using headphones? Do you need another device and speakers for that?
I would love to hear your opinion on amp modelers such as Kemper and Helix ;)
Dude, as a guitarist first and producer second I was reluctant to realize the virtual amps potential. Ever since I've needed to create more content quicly I've found what a useful tool the virtual amp really is, mostly through Kontakt's guitar rig. I know universal audio made great stuff, but I had no idea the Apollo twin had so much power! that'll be my next investment now.
Cool beans
damn, here you go sending me to sleep again with these sweet sweet sounds
What are your thoughts on the Line 6 Helix as a whole and as an interface for a DAW?
I listened to your video just after hearing Dan's 20w Mallard from the pedal show... The fresh comparison made feel the contrast. I found the first sample really harsh (fender),
I know this is a stupid question, but what speakers are you using to actually produce sound? I understand you plug your guitar into the device and the device goes into your computer, but where does the signal chain go from there? It's not a 2" computer speaker, is it?
bias FX vs Apollo what one would you choose?
Just an FYI to one of your final points. The computing power in a two-year-old Intel i9 processor is about 100 times more powerful than the Appolo's SHARC (which many people consider kind of antique) processor. It's still much better to run affects off a PC with multiple cores.
can i plug the interface in my laptop?
or i have to buy a pc?
thank u btw
I'm just curious but why not use some version of the two notes load boxes, or any other brand of load box and just use a head into the computer?
Last two houses I've had I took pains - and was lucky - to have small rooms I could use as cab booths I've never got on with amp sims - even your ones jump out at me - so that's a real boon.
Could you let us hear what the Apollo sounds like dry with your guitars so we can compare with our interfaces. So much emphasis is on the sim out here when the preamp is crucial along with the quality of the guitar and pickups are too.
I've been extremely happy with my Zoom G5. My situation calls for all different sorts of guitar sounds, and the pedal really keeps up. Pretty easy to match (somewhat closely) the tones/sounds of any given artist. It may not be perfect, but in a live setting, it really pulls it's weight.
stratman I think the pedal costs around $350, although there's the newer version (zoom g5n). It comes with free software.
In other words, it's not just software. It's a pedal you can program at home and take to gigs. Setting up patches is a breeze... just drag and drop the amps and effects as if you were arranging them on a pedal board.
Hi Tyler, did you apply any post processing or double tracking?
Wait does it have a PRS amp plugin? You gotta let me know please.
Imo the disadvantage of plugins is that you can't really experiment with instrument and mic placement to utilize the sound of your room/rooms.... I'm sure you could, but to me it seems like a daunting task to figure out a nice rerecording process when I've already got something I can make interesting textures with.
What is the name of the software that you have mentioned at 1:04? Would it be "Console"? And where can I get it? Thanks!
how about.... how to direct record if im using some pedals like wah/whammy/ODs - on and off?
thanks
Wait so did the interface you used come with all the plug ins and the app?
Help Anyone, what software is he running to get these amps and effects and how are we hearing these effects if he is not running this through Logic or Pro Tools?
Nice Video about Other Hardware Emulator :) A friend of mine gave me FL Studio 12 with Guitar Rig 5, im playing since 2 years with that now, and u might be surprised how well they are. ofc, to set FLs 12 & GR5 up, it takes a bit of technical understanding and routing on the Computer (useing Windows, not sure how it is on a Mac), it took me about 2 Hours to fully set it up to work properly and i work as a IT System Technician so ya ^^ one negative point i have to say is, The ASIO4all driver does not rly allow anything else on soundoutputs than FLs it self, that means, if FLs is running in ASIO4all driver (only works for GR5) u cant watch a video besides, well u can, but without any sound of the video, i might be able to get rid of that, but to be honest, for me, im fine with how it is atk and since i got it for free from a friend whos not using it anymore, why should i complain?
Did u ever try GR5? (i think its capable of being a Standalone and does not need FLs) i kinda wonder what ur person thinking is about it. Greez from Switzerland (yes, the chocolate - chees and Watches-Land :D )
The friedman stuff sounded better to me than the first fender sound.
yeah, the fender tone made my ears bleed
Comparing the Friedman to the Fender isn't the point. Comparing the virtual Fender Tweed to an actual vintage, overpriced Fender Tweed is.
Can you use your pedals with this interface?
Can you clean up any "amp" with the guitar volume control???? Best, Pete.
Is it possible to play the amp through a speaker for gigs?
You'll need studio monitors
And this was used with monitors right? if so what ones
What is a good set if speakers for guitar through computer setup?
That rock A sounded amazing
Where is the sound coming out of? Your monitors?
