Please never fill your lamp up over 3/4 its capacity. The heat of the flame can, expand the fuel causing it to leak around the lid and down the side of the lamp or cause the fuel to ignite. In the worst case scenario a fire will start under the lid crack the glass vessel spelling fuel all over wherever it is sat and the wick will ignite that fuel. very nice idea. they look just as safe as any oil lamp you can buy. I always think of it this way. as long as a person respects the flame you can make them as safe as u want.
The only other thing you might want to mention (for the intellectually challenged) is that the wick needs to be pulled up every so often so the flame won't burn out. And of course never leave any oil lamp unattended, make sure you're in the room especially if you have kids, cats, or a dog that could possibly disturb it. A little ventilation never hurts either, if it's not too cold outside-even cracking a window half an inch helps! Thanks for the video!!
@@donotaddmeplease Not sure how often you'd have to pull it up, but if you spiral wrap a steel wire all the way up the entire length of the wick, you can pull on the steel wire that is left sticking out to pull the wick up when the flame gets too small.
Vegetable oil or olive oil works good and it's easier to get than lamp oil. I made a miniature one out of a glass nail polish bottle and some string and aluminum foil
Thank you so much.... up to now I can make a little lamp for praying before God with olive oil. I will pray for you... may God bless you and all your family. Thank you... I couldn't believe how simple and easy to make it. Thank you... Jesus loves you..and He bless you..
Brilliant!!! I did something similar with one of those metal beer cans with the screw top, and I made the wick out of an old 100% cotton tee shirt that I cut a strip from. Neat idea!
I was checking out the comments, and ya know, those little 2" votive candles after they are spent, have a little metal sleeve, which can be reused safely. You'd just have to thread it into the lid. And btw, this really would make a great little gift.
👍👍 I enjoyed this video! I see a few comments stating the vid is too long, etc but it's much better than rushing through! I think that applies to EVERYthing we do! lol (People need more patience!!) But, I searched and needed a quick, easy and cheap way for a light source and your video has helped!! A couple of questions: Can I use olive oil instead of lamp oil? And is it better to use lamp wicks, yarn, thick string...? (I'm not wealthy and basically living on a shoestring) hmmm maybe even a shoestring work as a wick? lol What would be the cheapest but longest lasting? I'm planning to make about a dozen, and I'm just thinking, I could buy olive oil by the gallon, I believe the dollar store even has those vinegar bottles and I'm figuring the wick (in bulk) will probably be more than the rest. But I'd rather spend alittle extra, if it'll be longer lasting. If theres really no difference, than I'll go with whatever's cheaper. Thank you in advance if your able to respond. God bless 🌱📖🌱
Cool idea... but did you really need a 7 minute long video to explain: Vinegar bottle Lamp Oil goes in the bottle String goes in the oil then just light it...
jiujitsu2000, thank you for the video. I enjoyed watching your video step by step. some people rush through their presentation and i get frustrated having to rewind play rewind play. thanks again for the video.

I appreciate the support you give my channel as well as your kind words. I hope you and your family have a beautiful Christmas and a very Happy New Year... :-)
You've got so many good videos, I just wished I'd have subscribed earlier. I might have seen this one before I spent money on canning jars and various wick holders to accomplish this same thing at 4 times the price. Lol Mine will probably work better with the lower grade oils like olive oil and other veggie oils because the wick doesn't have to lift the fuel so high but lamp oil and the alcohols will easily wick up that long neck. Thanks
Great Video, but if I may, in my bottles, I don't fill them to the top, about halfway for me, never saw need to top off, fire a little too close to the fuel just below the cap.
+Bkeytx I also heard that as the lamp heats up the lamp oil expands, so having the bottle filled to the top could be dangerous if the oil begins to leak out the top. I agree, filling it half way would work just as well and be safer.
I love your videos. You are SO cool. Our brains work a lot alike. For that,,,, I truly feel sorry for you.! HAHAHA... I recently found some Tiki Torch wicks at the $ store. They were 2 for a dollar and I knew I would be able to use these things. I also have a 2023 Honda Monkey. It is too hot to ride right now but,,, I have been having fun with her here in the mountains.. I'm also one of those ickie o'l born agains... Peace Brother... Rev
I made it on two jars. One has aluminium cap (silver color) and the other is of (yellow-goldish color) but slightly bigger in size than the first bust still same rug length. The one with the coldish color tends to extinguish. Why is that? Color chemical reacting with the fire somehow or larger size of rag needs slightly bigger rug?
With lamp oil or kero you can get away with half full. It shouldn't have a problem wicking up that far. I would try to get the wick short enough were it doesn't smoke. Its a cool little lamp. hard to find these little containers with a all metal cap.
If anyone is watching this being homeless please consider what comes off that you WILL be inhaling. In my earn days I did wake up to black phlegm, but you learn. You can get smokeless+odourless lamp oil. ❤️❤️
how long does the wick last before you have to pull the string. You have great and useful ideas. This is why I sub to your channel. Keep up the good work.
I doing that!!!!! Right now!!! I wonder if you can do that with canola oil or olive oil like the people back in the old old old old old days used to do
you bought that lamp oil. was hoping for an oil alternative "how to make lamp oil". Comment if you know of any cheap/quality burning "mediums" other than actual lamp oil.
I tried this with a mop string into a bigger vinegar bottle with a bigger hole and it lights up alright, but i see smoke come up as well, so I don't recommend lighting this up inside.
I have one of those ceramic wick holders and I just can't seem to make it work as the wick just burns off after about 3 minutes. Can someone tell me what I need to do to keep the wick burning. Thank you!
I think the material helps. Natural fibre such as cotton is probably a lot better than nylon. It wicks better, pulling up more oil, which then vapourises. It should be the oil vapour that burns, not the wick.
I have a fear using bottle lamps i think the flame is going to go below the cap and ignite the fuel or the wick will fall through the hole and explode. WILL IT?

Olive oil was used in the 'original' oil lamps and might work in this application as well. Olive oil is much safer to burn; non-toxic fumes etc.
Yes, you're right. Your idea is overkill. This a better idea. Whale oil was the original. I like your idea though. Thanks

Here in India we make it out of Alcohol bottles 😂 and kerosine as fuel. and cotton cloth for the fuse.
Still being made in interior areas of our country and for maybe 3 centuries 😂
Sounds like a Molotov cocktail
@@nateholden7598 but there is no alcohol in the bottle, it is called "dibri" in our odia language.

Thanks for sharing. This will be-truly useful during the 3 days total darkness of the world.
You could drill out the hole to accept slightly larger round wicks. Great videos.
Ironicly you can actualy use vinegar to get the sticky glue off the bottom of the bottle
Is it necessary to use lamp oil? Will vegetable oil be as good? How long will this lamp last before refilling is needed.
Thanks, man! You just saved me a little dough. Gonna go hunt for some shoe string or some kinda string from around the house.
Whelp, shoe string 110% does not work.

It must be 100% cotton.
You can buy a length of wick at a craft store like Michael's or Hobby Lobby.
Another handy way to deal with the label goo is lighter fluid. I use it often! Great video, keep up the loading!
