I don't care what genre you want to place him, but Block is one of the leading great writers of any fiction, using the simplest of language (so incredibly hard to achieve) but with enormous insight and persuasiveness and deft wittiness to express the hopes and losses of being American - and elsewhere, for that matter. Block is truly one of the legends. Also, a very nice guy. Back when I was still on Facebook, I’d comment or DM him and he’d kindly reply. God bless him.
I was actually introduced to Lawrence Block through Tanner when I was 13-14. I would never have started writing crime and espionage if it weren’t for those books. Reading them again this summer.
I just finished 'A Stab In The Dark' and it flows.....My girlfriend who is Thai and likes thrillers AND can read/understand English pretty well asked me if she could handle it. This is NOT an insult to Mr Block...I think she can. Things dont have to be overly complex to be good. The Beatles wrote songs everyone liked, they were experts and it seems this is the case with Lawrence Block. The descriptions are so clear that my imagination is truly let to build the picture of what is occuring as I read. Really good stuff
