  • This informational five minute video contains an overview of this channel’s complete 4 video Open Heart Surgery Series. Presented from a patient’s point of view and narrated by an actual surgical patient, it gives the viewer a sense of what the entire open heart surgery series is about without having to watch each video. And, it does not contain a bunch of graphic surgical images. However, if you are about to have or have just had Open Heart Surgery (OHS) we encourage you and your family to watch each of the 4 videos in the series in their entirety. Doing so will help to answer questions, reduce anxiety and aid patients and their families with their pre-op preparation and the patient’s post-op recovery.

I recommend everyone who is considering a bypass or is a family member to watch these full videos.
My father is just now leaving the hospital after his bypass and continues to reference them. It really gave him as much peace of mind as possible through the whole situation.
He’s all well and just dealing with the natural emotions of it all now.
Big strong men need help sometimes!
    Thank you.

Meagan, please tell your father that the emotions he is going to experience are all normal, and family members may experience some of the same emotions also. I discuss them in video #4 and make some suggestions on how how to deal with them. If any other questions come up don't hesitate to contact me. I wish for your dad a speedy recovery, good luck, and may God Bless! Jim

My surgery is next week both a bypass and valve replacement. I'm scared about waking up and all that is to come. I'm a diabetic so healing is frightening to me. I live with chronic pain already and I worry about the pain meds too. I want to thank you for making these videos. I will follow your advice!

I know these videos are older but they have been most helpful in getting me prepared for my upcoming CABG surgery. Very informative and in many cases comforting. Thanks for making these.

Thank you for the wisdom and truth in these four videos! It is so valuable to know what is going to happen, and what happens next, before you are in the situation! Also, my family is grateful for this information so they understand the high level of the Nursing care post op. I was so thankful for the comment that that spending too much time visiting the patient on post op day one and two will actually be exhausting to the patient who will become the caretaker of the visitors. Let the specialist RNs handle it all, and develop the recovery habits the patient needs for the smooth transition from hospital to home.

Very informative, serious and helpfull videos. I am going through a dobble bypass in 3 weeks, and after watching all 4 videos, I now feel calm and very well prepaired, despite the dire situation. I think I could not have gathered all this accurate and usefull information, at one place elsewhere. Thank you both for helping me through.

My saphitic leg veins are varicosed, my breast artery calcified, so I guess they take a graft from an arm or thoracic region?

Hi Chris, if you have a concern about where they will be harvesting the vein or artery to be used for your grafts, I would contact your CT Surgeon prior to surgery and ask. You may be right about using an artery from your forearm, but if you want to be sure, just ask. Good luck and may God Bless! Jim
