Howdy everyone! this was baked at 450ºF/ 230ºC but if you're using the high-protein/ extra firm tofu try a bit lower of a temp unless you want it CHARRED
To anyone looking for the ‘fried chicken’ skin flavor, you can use white pepper and salt. I’m not sure why, but white pepper nails that seasoning flavor. Delish!
I loved your quick reasons to go vegan while the tofu was in the oven! The bite sized info and coming at it from multiple angles is so awesome. Makes me want to share with non vegan friends ❤
I'm not vegan or vegetarian (I mostly eat chicken, if I choose to eat meat) but these non-judgmental quick facts make me want to eat less meat, including chicken. 😅
@yuyutubee8435 yeah, if you sit and think about it for just a second, it's easy to see how barbaric and unnecessary our consumption of animals is. In 2024, it's pretty easy to just not eat animals. Lots of options, nobody goes hungry with grocery stores like ours.
definitely gonna try this one I still don’t think I’ve got two tofu right.I’m not vegan but stopped eating chicken because of welfare reasons after my daughter learnt about it at school but I am looking for a good high protein replacement and definitely keep trying tofu but need more practice.!
Hi Merle! I just tried this shredded tofu today in a salad and it was amazing! I try to eat a mostly vegetarian diet and you have been an excellent resource for me as I navigate high-protein plant-based swaps in my diet. Thank you for your knowledge and entertaining videos 😊
I love all your videos and especially the protein focused ones! You've given me so many new dishes that are now in my rotation 😋🥰 I'm always excited to see a new video from you :)
I've seen this many times too and always been weary of the shredding of the tofu so I'm glad to hear it wasn't as bad as my brain made it seem :) Thank you for doing these videos and testing things for those of us that are too lazy/tired/scared to test ourselves haha
This is such a cool idea! I’m not vegan, but I love watching your videos for ideas on incorporating more vegetables in meals or just plant based meals in general. Unrelated, but if you still plan on continuing your sober journey, I support it!!
Thank you SO much for your "info bite", talking about veganism when a lot of other creators seem to be afraid of the word nowadays. But we need more strong messages to end the exploitation of animals, and yours is so important :)
I’ll add a suggested recipe to try then for a potential future video, Merle. So Vegan has a sticky irange gochujang recipe that I’ve made over five times now. Super simple and tasty!
Nice thumbnail Merle 👍 When are you going to abandon that sinking ship formerly known as Twitter and come over to Threads and/or Bluesky? I look forward to seeing you there. 😊 I’m happy to report that I’m also a member of the reuse the paper towel club. Perfect timing for this recipe. I’m planning a dinner party where I’ll be serving different courses of tacos with a variety of tortillas, proteins, greens, vegan cheeses and salsas. This will be perfect!
PB with J has a baked shredded tofu recipe too, and he uses it similarly. I may get some tofu like that from TJ's and do exactly what you did except add a lil' maple syrup and liquid smoke, for some reason that sounds super good rn. Thanks for posting this---seems like every time you post a vid, I get excited about dinner again 😄
Awesome video! Never doubt if something is too simplistic, I’m here for the simple 😂 and I’ve even seen shredded tofu before and I still wanted to see how you were going to do it and use it. Deeeeefinitely trying this.
Just an FYI ... you can purchase flat, baking-sheet-size parchment paper ... so no problem with the parchment trying to roll back up Since the box it comes in is as big as a baking sheet ... I just store it in the same cupboard as the baking sheets. Maybe the extra crunchiness is due to the type of tofu you used. Whenever I buy the super high protein tofu, it seems to hold a lot less moisture than the regular tofu. The recipe looks fantastic ... I'll be trying it today. Thanks!
I honestly wish I could go vegan. That's why I watch your content. But I also have a health condition that means I'm allergic to both gluten and legumes and pulses among many other things. My diet is rather limited and I wish I could eat TVP or put beans or tofu in everything but I can't. :/ I eat the lowest carbon emission meat that my body will let me. I try to eat as much plant based food as possible within the list of foods that are safe for me. But I watch Merle because if they somehow manage to find a way to cure this and I can go vegan, I want some recipes in my back pocket. A person can dream :/
I'm really sorry you're struggling with this :( please don't let any hardcore vegan pressure you. You do what you can and that's enough. wish you all the best
i was so sure this was going to be an air fryer recipe but i'm glad i watched it and learned that i can just use my regular old oven! i'll try this for sure - i'm thinking it would be awesome with a gochujang glaze (what isn't???)
I loved your reasons to go vegan. All great points and not scary imo. Thanks for spreading the message 👏🏼😁 I made this in the same way that you did with the same tofu, and it was definitely sooo much crispier than in the original reel lol. Still delicious but like cronchy to the point of stabbing my mouth sometimes. Methinks that a different kind of tofu orrrr lower cooking time/temp would create a more chewy texture.
Try it with some soy sauce and a touch of cumin before baking. Additionally to the other spices I mean. If you shred it into a bowl, you can just toss it around (or "stir") to get an even coating. They soy sauce gives an awesome taste and keeps it slightly soft and moist. It's has more similarity with beef then. And the crazy thing is, I forgot some unused rest in the oven (it was off but still hot) and "found" it the next day. It was even better. Great accident. I'll try it as a cheese-steak sandwich next week.
hi! so i'm only writing this because you asked what our opinion on the "educational corner" was. personally, i skipped that part. i just wanted to see the recipe, which by the way i will be trying out cause dam. that looks good
Are you a mind reader? I was just looking at a cookbook recipe with shredded tofu but wasn’t sure. Gonna try your method and the cookbook recipe too. Thanks!
Yeah, I do someone's (think Sauce Stache) cheese steak which involves slicing thin strips of tofu (I use extra firm), marinading and than baking. 350F for 20 minutes is about the max time (for me) till it starts drying out too much. I'd tried this one though and just monitor till it gets to where you want it.
It's funny. I'm not Vegan and I don't cook but Merle is fun to watch and she's my favourite Vegan RUclipsr because she's funny. Edit: Merle could turn me Vegan randomly one day by her videos, and I won't complain 😂
I've seen other creators use this "raw". They shred it, marinate it, and then use it like you'd use tuna or chicken for a salad or sammie. Ih've not tried it yet, but thought you might like to use it instead of chickpeas in that other sammie recipe you did (there were three).
I'll try the taco tomorrow. It's less crunchy than yours. By itself it was pretty bland to me. But, so is chicken. ;-) I'm keeping an open and hopeful mind!
I'm not vegan or vegetarian but I will probably try this recipe tomorrow cuz I'm diabetic and I love crunchy things, and if I could use this as a replacement for chips, I'm super down.
Okay fine. BUT this will be tofu's last chance with me. I've tried several, oh this is the best and tastes so good tofu recipes in the past... and well... one was eatable. I have a block that I need to use, so this is it. Unless I love it. lol ;-)
Ooh, love our reigning vegan queen as always (who also always includes Celsius for us non-Americans!!! 🙏🙏) This is a recipe I will actually try myself!! Hahha! Call me intrigued! I love all your videos, obviously, but I am just wayyy to picky to try most of them, haha 😒. And thanks for the crumbled baking sheet tip, I was wondering why you did that in your last video!! As always, ciao for now!! ❤❤❤
I’m not vegan or vegetarian but never been a fan of chicken anyways. Tofu tastes way better plus what she said about chickens is right. I’ve had them and each one is so unique and they are pretty intelligent!

Hey Merle! I recommend sprinkling tofu bits with soy sauce before adding spices - so flavourful!
Awesome recipe ideas! Could even combine with vegan mayo, onion and celery for a "chicken" salad sandwich filling.
I’ve made this recipe 3 times since he posted it on IG! It is soooooo good.
Shredded tofu sounds amazing. I bet it would really go great with gochujang sauce.

Yep absolutely, I think the extra firm has less water and therefor gets broiled lol
I tried it this summer, seen the idea somewhere here on RUclips, it was called shredded bacon, adding it to my pasta - sooo good!

I have to try this baking method of preparing tofu. that taco looked very good

OK BUT
What if cooked a little bit less long......and used in chickn' and dumplings???
I have to try this!

Seems like it might be a good way to do a carnitas kinda thing.

yum 😍

Would the tofu shred if it had been marinated? I don't have much experience with tofu.
i would recommend marinating it after shredding! it will absorb it better!
