    These presentational videos give a good basis to gain knowledge, although over time we may use our own methods.. I enjoy watching videos like these as it gives inspiration to tackle a layout.., I'm also glad youngsters are getting into this hobby, maybe they are getting bored with computers..

    I found a can builder's foam the best. It's fast, quick drying and can be cut and shaped very easy. If you need to cover item's already fixed then cover up with paper. Also very fast and easy to remove and reshape. Tree's just push in. (i use a drop of white PVA wood glue to secure. Just wall paper paste over and add grass. I hope this has helped.

    Woodland Scenics makes some okay products. Iam on my third layout and AZ Rock and Mineral makes awesome ballast,more realistic and doesnt float when you glue it down.

    We assume you are referring to the paper towel method of dipping it into plaster for hills and mountains. The best plaster types we have used are Molding Plaster as the base dipped using paper towels, then after that is dry, brush on Hydrocal Plaster with a wide paint brush for the final strength of the plaster shell.

      You can also use regular paper towels, either whole or cut in half, or the fold up type. Just dip those in molding plaster that you can mix up yourself.

    why pay for plaster wrap when you have it already in the kitchen? I used papertowels dipped in soft plaster of Paris soup. It makes a great hard shell of mountains.

    When doing a scenic mountain, do we use normal plaster or plaster of pairs?

    • @GreenFrogVideos
      @GreenFrogVideos  7 лет назад +1

      Typically we would use two types of plaster, something called Hydrocal plaster for the basic shapes (very Strong) then Molding plaster brushed on top of the hardened Hydrocal, as well as using Molding plaster to fill molds of rocks and place the rock molds in strategic locations as well!

      There are many components to building a railroad layout. One place I found that successfully combines these is the Jareks hobby club (google it if you're interested) it's the best resource i've heard of. Check out all the interesting info .

    DON'T!!! use the newspaper technique..it does not work as well as a few other techniques. Better if your doing a LARGE layout of cardboard strips hotglued or stapled as a interweave patter for hill contours, etc. THEN large heavy duty industrial paper towels dipped in semi-thick plaster (like paper mache). You can also do the foam technqiue (though adds up FAST if a large layout). The newpaper technique isn't used really much anymore.. too hard to repair and to control when making hills etc.
