So many tasty treats 😍 I'm a huge fan of most of them... Love me some cajeta de leche (I buy them from a Cuban pharmacy in Hialeah {Miami}), piñonate, buñuelos, atol/atolillo, etc. Love them all! I remember Alfeñique being way too sweet, roscas being too dry... Now, hojuelas, turrones, etc. were my favorite "feria" or "parque de diversiones" foods. Jay needed a cup of coffee with her rosquillas and hojaldras 😉🤙🏻
Looks like Jay committed a sin by not having her rosquillas with coffee! Alfeñique was VERY sweet, but I found myself not being able to stop eating it. I did need two sittings to finish it off though! I tend to agree with you about the roscas, they were very dry. It's so good that you can get your Comida Nicaragüense fix in Miami, we won't be so lucky back in Australia!
Good thing I mentioned that! No wonder there are so many rosquillas in Somoto! We were in Octotal a couple of days ago, but then had to head back to Managua to extend our visas. We are now back at the beach at El Transito.
Looks like you guys really enjoyed the food tasting. To be honest I don't eating street food because I have a sensitive stomach. However, Kenny loves it and enjoyed it when we spend several months in Asia.
Yes we do love street food and Asian street food is amazing! We both have cast iron stomaches and, funnily enough, the only food poisoning in Nicaragua that we have had has been from food we prepared ourselves! Another cool thing about Nicaragua is that the tap water is drinkable, so that is likely to cut down a lot on any food poisoning issues.
I remember in one of your videos a while back you mentioned Pio Quinto and Sopa Borracha. Where did you rank them among Nica desserts? Cajeta de Zapoyol and Manjar are my faves.
Hi Pedro, great memory! We were going to put both of these in this video, but decided to have a 'part 2' with cakes and puddings. Oooh, we haven't tried cajeta de Zapoyol yet, we'll have to keep an eye out for that!
Hi Medina, thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Are 'churritos' the little churros? We tried those in Masaya and you just reminded us of them! It's a shame we didn't include these in the video as well! They took us a couple of days to get through, they were soooo sweet!
The pink glaze on the Rosquillas made me think there would be a little bit of spice to it. I was surprised when there wasn't! I think the Bunuelos look similar to fried oreos on the outside. All of these look delicious and I am putting this on my snack list!
Ooh, we are putting Fried Oreos on our list! Bunuelos are delicious! They are sort of like donuts dripped in honey! The pink glaze made it a little sweet, but no spice in there. Thanks for watching!
Rosquillas are like a dry doughnut inside basted in sugar with pink or red coloring... Turrones (turrón) are balls of popcorn kept together by molasses or brown sugar melted and heated to create the ball. Buñuelos are fried cassava dough bathed in either honey or sugary syrup. Hojaldra is basically an elephant ear, just crispies and thinner. 😋 Anything else contact me...
We need you as our advisor Daniel! We are confused with the hojaldra vs hojuela. We googled it beforehand and it looked the same. Can they be called different things in different parts of the country? We were also confused with the rosquilla dulces (roscas)and somoto style rosquillas. These were different things but called the same!
@@BucketListTravellers Haha, similar names can be confusing, but the hojaldras are exactly the same dough as rosquillas, only that they put a mix of cuajada and sugar in the middle! Double up on the cuajada, since the dough also has a lot of it! The hojuelas are very different, they're a typical wheat dough rolled out really thin and fried. The roscas are something I haven't seen yet, but it's possible they see it as a variation of rosquillas(don't know much about them, except they seem to contain wheat flour). It's possible there are some variations on what these things are called in different parts of Nicaragua, but I'm quite sure there's widespread consensus on rosquillas=masa mixed with eggs, cuajada and some sugar, they're just made slightly different when it comes to shaping and baking (there's an ongoing debate on whether the ones from El viejo, Somoto or Leon are the best, and I don't see an end to it soon, haha)
@@yaquelin1begreen Hi Worldsaver, thanks so much for making us aware of the hojaldras! Makes it harder when we get them in the same bag as the rosquillas! It is great that there is the rivalry over rosquillas, just goes to show how proud Nicaraguans are of their food/culture!
🤣🤣We had learnt our lesson from the time we taste tested all the drinks in one sitting! This was a fun treasure hunt for desserts across the country, so we did space it out, a little!
Aww 🥰 I love roquillas & Buñuelos accompanied with a nice coffee☕️Some sweets and desserts I myself haven’t even tried yet. Have you both tried the ‘flan’🍮yet? The flan origins are from Spain. It’s quite popular in many Latin American countries as well. Las tres leches is also a Spanish dessert but with a Nicaraguan twist to it! jajaja I think you have tired it in another video I saw previously. Saludos
Hi Michelle! We know now (after making the video!) that rosquillas are best with coffee and that makes a lot of sense! We haven't had the flan, but we have definitely tried tres leches and love that! We nearly included it in this video, but had too much. We will do a part two that focuses on cakes and puddings, like arroz con leche and Pio V!
Im planning to go to Nicaragua this December. The 2 places that I’m going for sure are Granada & ometepe. What hotels do you recommend. I heard about the chocolate museum in Granada. Is worth it? & I want to rent scooters or an atv in ometepe. I also want to ride horses around those to places
Great choices! Our time in Granada was spent at a rental, so we don't have too much hotel experience there. What sort of accommodation are you after? budget/mid range/high end? If you are planning on a longer stay (2+ or more weeks) in Granada with family then we recommend you look at the Granada Property services website. They have great colonial homes and you can use Granada as a base to see a lot of things. At Ometepe, we recommend Hospedaje Soma at Moyogalpa, Hotel Villa Paraiso or Xalli around Santo Domingo. There are plenty of others as well but it depends on how far you want to go into the island and the type of experience you want as well.
Choco museum is free to visit, so it is worth checking out if only for 20min. They have a big pool as well that you can use (at a cost). ATV/scooters would be a lot of fun on Ometepe and open up a lot more accomodation options on the Maderas side. You should also consider spending some time at San Juan Del Sur, as it is relatively close to Ometepe. We've done two reviews of resorts there, see here: ruclips.net/video/AFrkzXMJNMk/видео.html ruclips.net/video/TbJmScP49gg/видео.html
My favor are buñuelos 😋 in the east cost they have a dessert called queque de quiquisque. ( malanga root cake) very yummy! If you ever go to Bluefields, give it a try to see if you like it. Saludos!!
I love Bunuelos too (Jon here!)! Malanga root cake sounds very interesting and thanks for the suggestion. We would love to visit Bluefields and we get suggestions to go almost daily!

A very sweet video BLT!! I like buñuelos with that honey or Sirup, rosquillas, well many of them!! Delicious 👍. Have a great week BLT!!
Thanks for watching Henry, you guessed correctly! Have a great week too!

We love how you rationalizes deserts with cane sugar as healthy since they are less refined. LOL. The peanut dessert looked Amazing.
Anything to make myself feel less guilty about eating pure sugar! The Alfenique was soo sweet, yet I couldn't stop myself from eating it!😋😋
