So many options, I think i would love a place near the beach, but you give up a lot of things like conveniences and amenities. Maybe live in Managua for 6 months and 6 months by the beach is the solution. Excellent guide!

My wife grew up in Corinto. I grew up in Florida. Both lived in hot soupy places and hate it so if we retire in Nica it has to be in the mountains or on the beach where we can stay in the water a lot. We just dont want to imprison ourselves in the air conditioning. We may end up in another country but if we go to Nica I guess it would have to be Esteli, Matagalpa, Jinotepe…. Thoughts ? Thx for the great video !
You're welcome Banana Patch. Some of your previous questions had inspired this video! If you like being close to the water and a cooler temperature, then Jinotepe could be a good balance. The climate is milder, the city has most amenities that you need and It is only an hour drive to the pacific ocean, as well as an hour to Managua. Both Esteli and Matagalpa are very livable as well. You should definitely stay in each location for a couple of weeks to get a feel for the areas. As an aside, we were pleasantly surprised by San Jose's climate as well. It is a modern city and cooler than we expected it to be. That could be worth looking into as well and not too far aware from Nicaragua if you have family there still.

What an amazing video. Every time Justin watches your series on anything in Nicaragua, it keeps getting closer and closer to our "next country list". Are there places you could recommend that have little to no expat community? And, do you need an international drivers license to rent bikes?
Hey Leah (and Justin), that is great to hear! First place that comes to mind is Jinotepe. It is an hour drive to Managua from there and a decent sized town with cafes, supermarkets etc... Managua also doesn't have a large expat population (that we know of)either and I'm sure there would be plenty of opportunities for english teaching for you both.

It is worth spending some time visiting there first getting to know the ley of the land to work out whether it is right for you. That said, we loved Nicaragua and I'm sure you will too.

Hi Cynical, yes we certainly did. We spent nearly 5 months backpacking through Nicaragua and it was amazing! If you are prepared to go on the local buses you can travel basically all round the country. We'll be doing a video in a couple of weeks that breaksdown how much we spent during that time and we saw a lot for not much money!

I know people who live in San Juan Del Sur is a huge retirement area. Another friend lived in Esteli he got tired of his house getting broken into monthly.
Yes there are a lot of condos around SJDS and it is a nice area to retire to! That isn't good to hear about your friend in Esteli. Did they have a dog? Best security protection!
@@BucketListTravellers no he lived in a gated community . he owns a cigar company and is married to a nicaraguan. I know a lot of people in the cigar industry who work and live in Nicaragua. They say crime is mostly non violent stole phone things like that. One thing that has been stressed to me is never talk about freedom and politics in Nicaragua.

I have lived in nicaragua my whole life and still live here managua is the best city. If you actually plan to live in nicaragua your going to spend your take working so you shouldn’t be worried about being to far away from tourist attractions because you actually live there and managua is the most modern city so working is easier shopping is easier because everything in managua is like 20 ride. So if your a tourist granadas the best because of culture but if you plan on living here managua is the best for living

Hi Katrina, we used the tap water in the whole year that we lived in Granada for both drinking and washing produce and we had no issues at all. The water is potable in the main cities.

Hello guys. Thank you a lot for such an informative video. I am just wonder if I can count on you help while my retirement moving to Nicaragua? I never travel to Central or South America before but I am planing to take my Nicaragua trip in the nearest time. I am not interested with huge cities or anything near beaches. I am looking forward to settle down somewhere in a very little town or even village where I can have my chickens, vegetable garden and cooler weather with natural beauty, quiet neighbors, and simple style of life among friendly people to make some friends. I am Russian, American citizen and retired in the US and I wait for ages to bring my daughter and her son to join me as family and it is forever and useless expectation with absolutely unreasonable immigration law here. I am loosing a lot, benign alone and do not seeing my grandson growing up.
Hi FreeAtBirth, we recommend looking at the Miraflor area. It is a cooler area being up in the mountains and is a peaceful area with small villages with many farms. Now it is around 3 hours away from the capital of Managua and 1-2 hours from Esteli, your nearest city. We would also look around Jinotepe, which is a small city around 1 hour from Managua. We stayed at a farm just outside the city and found it to be a really beautiful and peaceful location. Good luck with your move!
I lived in Nicaragua for a couple years in the late 1990s, but I never did any tourist things and I didn’t live in the tourist areas (l lived in Estelí, Juigalpa, Tipitapa, Managua). The last time I visited was 2001 and those visits were just visiting friends and a college research study. I’m bring some people down this summer and I’m trying to get a handle on a couple tourist things. The only tourist information I have is from RUclips videos like yours (thank you) and internet. All the internet stuff I find seems to be way over priced. I’d love any recommendations you have but specifically I’m wondering if you have any recommendations for groups to volcano board Cerró Negro and/or Canopy Tours. We plan to visit southern Nicaragua (Granada, Ometepe, San Juan del Sur) along with Leon and Estelí.

To answer your questions, we went with Volcano Day and we were happy with their service. The tour also covered a trip to Las Penitas in the afternoon. Whilst also good generally, we were bunched in with people from Big Foot hostel and had a really uncomfortable ride back on the bus due to misbehaving young tourists. The Bigfoot staff (also young tourists) didn't manage the unruly behaviour. Perhaps we just had a bad one off experience, but something to be mindful of. For places around Granada, contact Danny from Danny's tours. He was a good operator, well priced and he took us to Somoto Canyon from Granada (video here: ruclips.net/video/18IofnSRVdg/видео.html). Generally it is best to ask around once you are on the ground. This was our approach, but only useful if you have the luxury of time. All the best with your trip!
Hi Jenet, yes it is safe to swim in many spots in Nicaragua. There are bull sharks in Lake Nicaragua, but that didn't stop us from swimming on Ometepe island. Ojo de Agua is a great spot to swim there if you don't want to swim at a beach. As with anywhere, ocean currents can be dangerous. I don’t leave the coast. I live in San Juan. -Playa Marsella. The valley heat will kill you. And I don’t use a vehicle on chocolata. I sail my electric kayak 30 min. to town. Super good internet here.
It gets pretty hot on the coast too! Yes we found the internet to be really good along San Juan Del Sur as well, much better than Granada and most places in Nicaragua. We found that surprising.
@@BucketListTravellers sure it can get hot, but compared to the interior it's no contest. Returning from Rivas , the temperature change going over the mountain is obvious. The change is also noticeable from the beach to a couple of miles inland. Also electric kayaking from playa Marsella to San Juan is wonderful . No dust and quicker than dusty Chocholata road. The private housing development with a park at the beach is the best place I found . And the price for a lot is most reasonable. I love living there.
@@BucketListTravellers bosque del mar is a great place. And affordable land. I paid 20,ooo for a lot in a canopy of large trees with water and power at the lot line. 1,000’ from a calm beautiful cove. Easy to launch boat. And there is a beach park with bbq and covered elevated tables. Totally safe and can keep kayak parked on the beach. Chocolata is being paved. Bosques Del Mar is a private development with a gate and guard at the entrance along Chocalata rd.
It generally starts from late May and goes through to November. It is a good time to visit, you just need to do your activities in the morning as the storms will roll in in the afternoon.
Hello, I was born in Nicaragua but left at the age of 12. I would like to retire there. Which other places besides Leon are better to live in? I don't like the heat as I heard Leon is very hot since I have asthma I can't live in that kind of weather.

Hi Alberto, Great to hear from you! There are certainly a number of expats with medical needs that have retired in Nicaragua and services are available. We'd suggest joining one of the Nicaragua expat Facebook groups to get advice from other expats that have been through the process and are more familiar with the medical system in Nicaragua. You could also try contacting one of the major hospitals like Hospital Vivian Pellas to see if they can point you in the right direction of good quality home care service providers. As we aren't on the ground anymore in Nicaragua, we are not well placed to provide relocation services, but you may be able to find someone to assist you via Nicaragua expat facebook groups. We'd recommend staying on the Pacific Coast side of Nicaragua for the best access to services. All the best Jay and Jon
Hi ascension futurist, thanks for watching. In Nicaragua generally, 'crimes of opportunity' like people taking mobile phones (sometimes out of your hand) are not uncommon, so it is best to be careful with valuables. San Juan would be no exception to this.
We had planned a 1 year trip around the world when we got stuck in Nicaragua, so were not working. Lucky for us was that Nicaragua was very cheap and we had plenty of savings to keep us going. We did start the RUclips channel whilst here and that kept us busy.
Very astute Martin! The east coast was our big regret in not visiting and our no 1 bucket list item for when we return. Bluefields, Corn islands and Pearl islands would have been great experiences to visit.
Hi Realhiphoplove24, it is generally safe everywhere in NIcaragua. There are crimes of opportunity, i.e. petty theft, particularly mobile phones getting stolen etc.., but that is about it. So just be careful in busy, crowded areas. We've seen that you've found our video on this, so hopefully this has answered most of your questions (here is the link anyway, for anyone else interested: ruclips.net/video/uAs4zFeYBEg/видео.html) The Mercado oriental in Managua, San Juan Del Sur beach after dark and Granada lakeside were the only areas we were told to be wary about when we were living there.
Hi there, thanks for watching. I can't recall seeing any strip clubs in Nicaragua when we were there. Nicaragua is a pretty conservative country, so it is worth researching out the laws first before investing too much money into the idea. All the best.
Hi there, it depends on where you are planning to stay. There are plenty of airbnbs in the major cities to stay temporarily and real estate agents that can help you with the move for something longer term. It is also practice to walk around, look out for signs of properties up for rent and just ask around.
@@MartineReed one thing to consider is whether you will be able to get spare parts easily in Nicaragua if your vehicle needs any repairs. with that in mind, your vehicle also needs to be less than 10 years old from date of manufacture to be eligible to import. You may be able to get around this 10 year rule if it is a classic or historic vehicle. Other than that there's a large amount of paperwork required including showing residency visa, your passport, insurance, customs declaration, commercial invoice or title, bill of landing, declaration of value etc. You must also pay all associated fees and charges for importing the vehicle. Hope this helps.
How do foreigners deal with medical services over age 65? If you have to pay cash in advance of hospital services how do you do that if you don't carry around a lot of cash all the time?
Hi Dovy, we visited dentists and dermatologists when we were in Nicaragua and paid either by cash or card. We haven't experienced hospital services first hand, but we recommend joining an expats facebook group like expats of Granada and they should be able to assist.
@@BucketListTravellers You paid cash from an ATM? I just heard about the issue of having to pay for hospital services in advance. But a person may not have the chance to get that much cash in advance.....
@@dovygoodguy1296 our doctors checkups were around US$20, so not much cash was required. Not sure how much a hospital visit would be, but the prices in Nicaragua tend to be quite reasonable. Yes we got cash out at an ATM. We recommend getting a bank card that refunds ATM fees. So many options, I think i would love a place near the beach, but you give up a lot of things like conveniences and amenities. Maybe live in Managua for 6 months and 6 months by the beach is the solution. Excellent guide!

My wife grew up in Corinto. I grew up in Florida. Both lived in hot soupy places and hate it so if we retire in Nica it has to be in the mountains or on the beach where we can stay in the water a lot. We just dont want to imprison ourselves in the air conditioning.
We may end up in another country but if we go to Nica I guess it would have to be Esteli, Matagalpa, Jinotepe….

You're welcome Banana Patch. Some of your previous questions had inspired this video! If you like being close to the water and a cooler temperature, then Jinotepe could be a good balance. The climate is milder, the city has most amenities that you need and It is only an hour drive to the pacific ocean, as well as an hour to Managua. Both Esteli and Matagalpa are very livable as well. You should definitely stay in each location for a couple of weeks to get a feel for the areas. As an aside, we were pleasantly surprised by San Jose's climate as well. It is a modern city and cooler than we expected it to be. That could be worth looking into as well and not too far aware from Nicaragua if you have family there still.

What an amazing video. Every time Justin watches your series on anything in Nicaragua, it keeps getting closer and closer to our "next country list". Are there places you could recommend that have little to no expat community? And, do you need an international drivers license to rent bikes?
Hey Leah (and Justin), that is great to hear! First place that comes to mind is Jinotepe. It is an hour drive to Managua from there and a decent sized town with cafes, supermarkets etc... Managua also doesn't have a large expat population (that we know of)either and I'm sure there would be plenty of opportunities for english teaching for you both.

Hi Tater Tot, that sounds lovely. Getting involved in the community is a great way to make a life for yourself and family there. It is worth spending some time visiting there first getting to know the ley of the land to work out whether it is right for you. That said, we loved Nicaragua and I'm sure you will too.

Hi Cynical, yes we certainly did. We spent nearly 5 months backpacking through Nicaragua and it was amazing! If you are prepared to go on the local buses you can travel basically all round the country. We'll be doing a video in a couple of weeks that breaksdown how much we spent during that time and we saw a lot for not much money!

I know people who live in San Juan Del Sur is a huge retirement area. Another friend lived in Esteli he got tired of his house getting broken into monthly.
Yes there are a lot of condos around SJDS and it is a nice area to retire to! That isn't good to hear about your friend in Esteli. Did they have a dog? Best security protection!
@@BucketListTravellers no he lived in a gated community . he owns a cigar company and is married to a nicaraguan. I know a lot of people in the cigar industry who work and live in Nicaragua. They say crime is mostly non violent stole phone things like that. One thing that has been stressed to me is never talk about freedom and politics in Nicaragua.

If you actually plan to live in nicaragua your going to spend your take working so you shouldn’t be worried about being to far away from tourist attractions because you actually live there and managua is the most modern city so working is easier shopping is easier because everything in managua is like 20 ride. So if your a tourist granadas the best because of culture but if you plan on living here managua is the best for living

Hi Katrina, we used the tap water in the whole year that we lived in Granada for both drinking and washing produce and we had no issues at all. The water is potable in the main cities.

Hello guys. Thank you a lot for such an informative video. I am just wonder if I can count on you help while my retirement moving to Nicaragua? I never travel to Central or South America before but I am planing to take my Nicaragua trip in the nearest time. I am not interested with huge cities or anything near beaches. I am looking forward to settle down somewhere in a very little town or even village where I can have my chickens, vegetable garden and cooler weather with natural beauty, quiet neighbors, and simple style of life among friendly people to make some friends. I am Russian, American citizen and retired in the US and I wait for ages to bring my daughter and her son to join me as family and it is forever and useless expectation with absolutely unreasonable immigration law here. I am loosing a lot, benign alone and do not seeing my grandson growing up.
Hi FreeAtBirth, we recommend looking at the Miraflor area. It is a cooler area being up in the mountains and is a peaceful area with small villages with many farms. Now it is around 3 hours away from the capital of Managua and 1-2 hours from Esteli, your nearest city. We would also look around Jinotepe, which is a small city around 1 hour from Managua. We stayed at a farm just outside the city and found it to be a really beautiful and peaceful location. Good luck with your move!
I lived in Nicaragua for a couple years in the late 1990s, but I never did any tourist things and I didn’t live in the tourist areas (l lived in Estelí, Juigalpa, Tipitapa, Managua). The last time I visited was 2001 and those visits were just visiting friends and a college research study. I’m bring some people down this summer and I’m trying to get a handle on a couple tourist things. The only tourist information I have is from RUclips videos like yours (thank you) and internet. All the internet stuff I find seems to be way over priced. I’d love any recommendations you have but specifically I’m wondering if you have any recommendations for groups to volcano board Cerró Negro and/or Canopy Tours. We plan to visit southern Nicaragua (Granada, Ometepe, San Juan del Sur) along with Leon and Estelí.

To answer your questions, we went with Volcano Day and we were happy with their service. The tour also covered a trip to Las Penitas in the afternoon. Whilst also good generally, we were bunched in with people from Big Foot hostel and had a really uncomfortable ride back on the bus due to misbehaving young tourists. The Bigfoot staff (also young tourists) didn't manage the unruly behaviour. Perhaps we just had a bad one off experience, but something to be mindful of. For places around Granada, contact Danny from Danny's tours. He was a good operator, well priced and he took us to Somoto Canyon from Granada (video here: ruclips.net/video/18IofnSRVdg/видео.html). Generally it is best to ask around once you are on the ground. This was our approach, but only useful if you have the luxury of time. All the best with your trip!

Is it safe to swim in the ocean/sea and rivers? or you cannot swim there? What should you be aware of in Nicaragua (nature and more)?
Hi Jenet, yes it is safe to swim in many spots in Nicaragua. There are bull sharks in Lake Nicaragua, but that didn't stop us from swimming on Ometepe island. Ojo de Agua is a great spot to swim there if you don't want to swim at a beach. As with anywhere, ocean currents can be dangerous. I don’t leave the coast. I live in San Juan. -Playa Marsella. The valley heat will kill you. And I don’t use a vehicle on chocolata. I sail my electric kayak 30 min. to town. Super good internet here.
It gets pretty hot on the coast too! Yes we found the internet to be really good along San Juan Del Sur as well, much better than Granada and most places in Nicaragua. We found that surprising.
@@BucketListTravellers sure it can get hot, but compared to the interior it's no contest. Returning from Rivas , the temperature change going over the mountain is obvious.
The change is also noticeable from the beach to a couple of miles inland. Also electric kayaking from playa Marsella to San Juan is wonderful . No dust and quicker than dusty Chocholata road. The private housing development with a park at the beach is the best place I found . And the price for a lot is most reasonable. I love living there.

@@BucketListTravellers bosque del mar is a great place. And affordable land. I paid 20,ooo for a lot in a canopy of large trees with water and power at the lot line. 1,000’ from a calm beautiful cove. Easy to launch boat. And there is a beach park with bbq and covered elevated tables.
Totally safe and can keep kayak parked on the beach. Chocolata is being paved. Bosques Del Mar is a private development with a gate and guard at the entrance along Chocalata rd.

It generally starts from late May and goes through to November. It is a good time to visit, you just need to do your activities in the morning as the storms will roll in in the afternoon.

Great to hear from you! There are certainly a number of expats with medical needs that have retired in Nicaragua and services are available. We'd suggest joining one of the Nicaragua expat Facebook groups to get advice from other expats that have been through the process and are more familiar with the medical system in Nicaragua. You could also try contacting one of the major hospitals like Hospital Vivian Pellas to see if they can point you in the right direction of good quality home care service providers.
As we aren't on the ground anymore in Nicaragua, we are not well placed to provide relocation services, but you may be able to find someone to assist you via Nicaragua expat facebook groups. We'd recommend staying on the Pacific Coast side of Nicaragua for the best access to services.

Hi ascension futurist, thanks for watching. In Nicaragua generally, 'crimes of opportunity' like people taking mobile phones (sometimes out of your hand) are not uncommon, so it is best to be careful with valuables. San Juan would be no exception to this.
What did you guys do for jobs while you lived in Nicaragua.?
We had planned a 1 year trip around the world when we got stuck in Nicaragua, so were not working. Lucky for us was that Nicaragua was very cheap and we had plenty of savings to keep us going. We did start the RUclips channel whilst here and that kept us busy.
Did you ever go to the east coast?
Alas no. It was our only regret in Nicaragua. We have Bluefields as no.1 item to visit next time.

Hi Realhiphoplove24, it is generally safe everywhere in NIcaragua. There are crimes of opportunity, i.e. petty theft, particularly mobile phones getting stolen etc.., but that is about it. So just be careful in busy, crowded areas. Hi there, it depends on where you are planning to stay. There are plenty of airbnbs in the major cities to stay temporarily and real estate agents that can help you with the move for something longer term. It is also practice to walk around, look out for signs of properties up for rent and just ask around.

How about bringing a vehicle to Nicaragua? What are the rules?
Hi Martine, are you asking about just passing through the country or permanently importing it?

@@MartineReed one thing to consider is whether you will be able to get spare parts easily in Nicaragua if your vehicle needs any repairs. with that in mind, your vehicle also needs to be less than 10 years old from date of manufacture to be eligible to import. You may be able to get around this 10 year rule if it is a classic or historic vehicle. Other than that there's a large amount of paperwork required including showing residency visa, your passport, insurance, customs declaration, commercial invoice or title, bill of landing, declaration of value etc. You must also pay all associated fees and charges for importing the vehicle. Hope this helps.
How do foreigners deal with medical services over age 65? If you have to pay cash in advance of hospital services how do you do that if you don't carry around a lot of cash all the time?
Hi Dovy, we visited dentists and dermatologists when we were in Nicaragua and paid either by cash or card. We haven't experienced hospital services first hand, but we recommend joining an expats facebook group like expats of Granada and they should be able to assist.
@@BucketListTravellers You paid cash from an ATM? I just heard about the issue of having to pay for hospital services in advance. But a person may not have the chance to get that much cash in advance.....
@@dovygoodguy1296 our doctors checkups were around US$20, so not much cash was required. Not sure how much a hospital visit would be, but the prices in Nicaragua tend to be quite reasonable. Yes we got cash out at an ATM. We recommend getting a bank card that refunds ATM fees. Hi Rolo Rickin, whilst we firmly believe in democracy, it is not completely true that non democracies are dangerous countries for travellers/expats. Singapore is an example of a 1 party state that is also one of the safest countries in the world.
