Daddy bought his cars from Mr. Anderson. My Mother worked at Watson's for a while & then the Dairy Bar. and that is where my parents met. The "castle" use to have these big numbers that they put out for guides of some sort for the river boats. A friends Father, Mr. Ron, worked there & my friend & I played there. LOVED this video111
I live in Golconda Illinois. Thank you for doing a video here. Lil Hank (Mason Ramsey) is from here and still lives here. His grandpa comes to the bar where I do DJ/KJ but the grandpa doesn't have a voice like Mason 😂
Cairo (Kay ro)was on my list since "The adventures of Huck Finn" the Movie. The bridge over the Mississippi from Missouri ends at a stop sign by a park at the south end of town, a right turn puts you on another bridge to Kentucky over the Ohio River. Cairo has Magnolia trees and levees with massive flood gates on the highway to keep floods out. The "City of New Orleans" still passes through Cairo ,a town with history...
When was a boy 65 years ago Cairo was still an active town as it was a river and rail hub. I was lasr through there 20 years ago and it was sad to see how much of Cairo is gone to ruins. It shouldn't have happened to such a historic place. Now it is lost to changing timrd.
Enjoyed that one! (I'm from Mississippi, and we usually think of Illinois as being "up north", but in the Ohio River towns of Illinois I always feel like I'm still down south.)
Glad to see you guys back in the saddle again!! Yay!❤ Your faces let me know you are in your happy zone. 😄 What a wonderful historical dive into a very neat town! Thank you.👍
I live in Most Southern Illinois, in a mature home that has seen its share of family rearing, coming and goings. . Our largest winter bill is around 300- for our 5 bed-3 bath home. We do have a supplemental fireplace too. Yes, our winters are Very much milder than Wisconsin.
Good job on the video. We loved Marty's insight about heating the building and the construction of buildings. Very interesting to us. Well, we loved the entire tour actually. And Pam noticed that you were able to climb the stairs and that makes us happy. Thanks, Doug and Pam
Thanks Doug and Pam, glad you enjoyed the vid! As much as I dislike wearing them the compression stockings have made a world of difference in my day to day life.
Southern Illinois is horribly hot and humid nine months of the year. The other three are mud season. Hubby is from a town a little farther up the Ohio river. He hates Wisconsin winters, however he doesn't miss the other nine months. Wow, a court house without a security guard and metal detection system!
These are so interesting and somehow at some time in the future I would not be surprised that small towns like this get discovered by digital nomads like they are being done in certain places in Europe.
So nice to see you two on the road again. Love to see the small towns and the cool old buildings. Thanks for taking us along. Best to you both, Lynn & Steve😎
I'm enjoying your Southern Illinois travels. Having passed through frequently a half a dozen years ago I have a fondness for the area and small towns in general. Good job as usual for you guys.
I always save you videos for Sunday morning with a coffee. That Marty cracks me up with all his talking in stuff. my guess you can't get a moment of silence around him.. lol..
I am a local here in Golconda. Thank you for showing the beauty of our small River Town. I wish you guys could have seen the old jail that used to sit behind the courthouse. It was really a blast from the past.
I grew up in southern Illinois. When I hear of rents in California, Florida and Oregon being outrageously high, I think of these quiet midwest towns with nobody on the streets and wonder what a two bedroom home would rent for? These towns are perfect for retirees. I now live in Virginia and we have the same quiet little villages. So enjoyable with homes going back to the 1700's.
I live in Central Illinois about equal distance between Springfield and St. Louis and for me this is the best place to be the way times are. House prices are high but other costs are not bad and Illinois does not tax retirement nor Social Security so it is ideal for my wife and . My wife and I have lived average cities (Decatur IL ) , large cities (St. Louis Mo.-San Antonio TX ) and small towns (Gillespie and Lebanon IL ) and there were good and bad things about each. But here in Gillespie where I was raised, we are living the small town life but are only 50 minutes from either St. Louis on Springfield IlL.) We can enjoy a relatively safe area to live with access to hospitals, restaurants, and city amenities like the Sr. Louis Zoo and At Museum, Cardinal Baseball, Blues Hockey, and the Lincoln Home, Law Office, and Presidential Library. There is also the Mississippi and Missouri River nearby and the historic cities of Alton, Belleville, Lebanon, and Cahokia within an hours drive.
@@bentnickel7487 Yeah. I would agree. We don't have a lot of things in a small town but at 75 the issue is not what I need , but how get rid of the stuff i've accumulated and inherited over the years. Grocery shopping becomes simplified. Between the foods that i have outgrown, and the stuff the doctors won't let me eat, shopping is simple, cheap, and i recognize most of the songs.LOL
Down the river south from Golconda is the town of Hickman, Ky. Jessie James and his brother used to cross the river there. There used to be a bar right across from the crossing . Jessie James carved his name under one of the tables. When I was a kid, you could still see where he'd carved his name there.
I love this video! A friend of mine years ago retired to Golconda for a few years. Then, she moved back to Northern Illinois. This is the first I heard of this town. This is a neat little town!😊❤
Interesting,I’ve lived in Evansville all my life, even worked with a descendant of the Mesker family and never heard of the building materials. All the time I knew of the company, they dealt in steel, coil and such
I enjoy your videos, especially of Southern Illinois. I live in nearby Makanda, a small but interesting town adjacent to Giant City State Forest. Makanda is basically an artist community and is close to the town of Cobden and Alto Pass. This area has a rich history and I think you should also check it out.
Really enjoyed your video on Galconda. I made several observations and comments. Unfortunately they got lost before I could post them. It was an enjoyable video.
Suggest that you check out an interesting and historic Illinoiis town which my wife and I had the pleasure to live in for several years before i entered the Air Force. , Take a trip to Lebanon Illinois and step back in time on their main street and the Mermaid Inn . Charles Dickens stayed there on his travels in the United States. Take in a stage play at the Looking Glass Theater, established in 1973 and still going strong 51 years later. My wife was the first secretary on the board and I came in two years later. Well worth the trip. especially at Christmas when the downtown looks like something from a Currier and Ives drawing.
I really enjoy your videos! Especially when I can’t get out if my back or sciatica flares up. You go to such a variety of places and the history is really interesting! Thank you!!
me and my parents used to live above the senior citzen building that actually was built while we lived there i was in the grand opening flag cermony 1980-1981
I enjoy watching you visit the forgotten areas of Southern Illinois. My grandmother is from the Hurst/ Carbondale area so I really enjoy small towns. I haven’t heard of that little place but enjoyed seeing you explore.
@@SightseeingSally I could tell. You both were obviously pleased to be back at it! Even your dogs looked happy in the scenes where Marty was walking them. 😄 I’m looking forward to your next video!👍❤️
I read a "Trail of Tears"history book many years ago that said someone felt pity for how hungry the Cherokee's were and gave them pumpkins to eat. However, this gave them diarrhea which made things worse for them. Also, they were given spoiled & rotten food many times on their journey east to west. This book commented that vultures would travel along and at night roost in nearby trees. Sitting around camp at night they could hear the droppings knowing full well that that was their relatives and members of the tribe. An estimated 6,000 died on the 1,200 mile trip. Did they not bury the dead? Not hard to believe they didn't. Hard to hear at times that America is a Christian nation.
Part of me was hoping you'd show the public school, as my cousin spent his educational career as a teacher and administrator in the Pope County schools in Golconda.

Southern Illinois should be called Northern Kentucky, it's very Southern and not always in good ways. Lots of poverty.
