sometimes i think i miss the TUV, as i see here in the US what cars look like without any form of mandatory inspection. But then i wake up and act right again. I used to have a quite beautiful tizianrot-beigegray 1966 Westfalia Split window VW bus with a english made Dormobile roof on it. Google it, the dormobile roof is quite awesome. i had a propane tank under the bus, also a truma gas heater with a remote thermostat. it was quite nice, even in the winter.

Congratulations for the fine work you have done in your Van, hopefully you shall have a lot of nice hours, days and weeks while travelling and: Without any accident nor severe injuries.
I had a longer break looking for your videos, we hade just 4 weeks in the wine harvest herer in the Mosel valley, I spend weeks before in the woods to make the winter wood, 10 hours per day to work outside was normal. Now I am sitting near the stove, weather is bad but listening music, seeing the burning fire and discovering your new video: That makes my day. Everything is fine, Let the winter come, everything is prepared to change our daily life from summer into the winter mode. @@LaureninGermany Wenn in Wales die Bestimmungen lockerer sein sollten, wäre das vielleicht eine Lösung des TÜV Problems. Du müsstest dann allerdings nach 180 Tagen Deutschland mit dem Van verlassen und mindestens 4 Wochen im Ausland bleiben; falls sich die Bestimmungen nicht geändert haben. Diese Zeit könntest du ja mit einem Urlaub verbinden. Oder du stellst ihn in eine Garage wo ihn keiner sieht. So hatte ich das früher immer gemacht.

Hallo Lauren, zuerst einmal meine Gratulation zu Deinem schicken Wohnmobil. Man sieht Dir an wie stolz Du bist, und das kannst Du auch sein. Als ich die Bilder von Norwegen sah ist mir sofort unsere Reise zum Nordkap eingefallen. Diese Straße sind wir auch gefahren. Was den TÜV anbelangt, da waren in den 60er Jahren die Bestimmungen noch nicht so streng als wir unseren Bundeswehr-Unimog selbst umgebaut haben. Da haben wir ja scheinbar noch Glück gehabt. Alles Gute weiterhin.

Bis zum Nordkapp haben wir es noch nicht geschafft, aber die Lust ist noch groß. Die Lofoten haben wir aber entdeckt. Omgoodness! Was für Bilder, Heinz!
That's a key thing to do here in Germany when you do any bigger work on a vehicle: Involve the TÜV people early and often to avoid ending up with a lovely freshly built static display piece.
Ask them what may pass their testing and what won't. In custom builds, restoration, camper conversion, anything.

I'm sorry about your experience dealing with TÜV. For 35 years I worked for a high tech company here (recently retired) in the US, designing test equipment for in-house use. Any of the equipment we shipped to Europe, had to also pass TÜV, so I understand your frustration very well. Look forward to your next video!

The german TÜV is not the only MOT. Also DEKRA and gtu possible.
And you can change not only from Lorry to mobile home. rv
You can change it also to Special vehicle camping. This is easier as to a mobile home.

However, back to business.: Yes, but they are not dedicated to the ventilation. Your neck will block one and what if you clap down the eye visor. No, drill a 5 cm2 hole, immediately, or I’ll have to process you as a lorry driver 😂

Nice conversion, Lauren! Don't let TÜV bother you. Be happy that you got the registration as a camper, which not everybody gets. From what I know, these things depend a lot on which examiner does this, because there is so much room for interpretation in much of the regulations about campers.
Regarding the ventilation, I'm a bit surprised that you can't convert the hatch into one with forced ventilation without it starting to leak. Have you contacted the manufacturer? Usually, you just have to replace the inside frame with one that has the necessary slits. Also, I doubt that anybody will ever look at that thing again. Unless maybe you have your next regular examination by the same person. And even then, I doubt they will check whether that sealing is present or not. You usually have to prove these things only once for the re-registration as as camper. The regular examination has nothing to do with that. The only thing you have extra in comparison to a normal car is the gas inspection *if* you have a fixed gas installation, e.g., for heating.
But I would really rather try to stay with forced ventilation anyway. It's much better for the room climate, especially for humidity. And it does not use up much of the heating. By the way, do you have a gas heater or Diesel? I didn't quite get that from the video. If you heat with Diesel, then it would be easy to get rid of gas and the gas examination completely. For the camper registration, a simple electrical cooker should be enough as long as it fixed, and of course, *nobody* cares whether you use a portable gas cooker at your own risk. But for safety, it should be one with gazstop, which means that it closes the gas supply when the flame goes out.
The funny thing is that I with my minicamper could easily get the camper registration but I actually don't want it. I have an Opel Combo, long and high, with Diesel heater, a Microwave, a fixed bed, a roof hatch (with forced ventilation 😉), and a nice little kitchen, and even with a small shower. For cooking (especially water), I use a very good spirit cooker from Fishbone (and the Microwave, of course). I checked with the local TÜV, and they said the car could be registered as a camper as is (didn't show the spirit cooker, of course). There was a change in the regulation regarding the standing height. Until a few years ago, full standing height was a legal requirement, but not anymore. Hence, I could register my camper, *but* I don't want this because I am so low with my insurance that it would really not make any financial sense for me. But above all, I want to be able to remove everything from the car and use it for either cargo and/or people, and that would be illegal if it was officially a camper (tax reasons, like with boat or horse trailers, where you don't pay any taxes on the trailer, it would be tax fraud if you used it for regular cargo). And for registering as a camper, I would have to register it as a 2-seater permanently because I removed the rear seats for the conversion. But I don't want that, of course. The only drawback now is that I have to put the rear seats into the car for the bi-annual examination. I have yet to find an examiner who doesn't care. But anyway, I designed everything modular, and I can remove everything or put it back within an hour if necessary.

Hi Mogon, I have a lovely diesel heater! Btw, if you would re-register, you too would need the hole in the floor or wall, as well as somewhere else. Whether or not you have gas inside, you need security ventilation, i.e. holes, since 2023, only the size is variable, depending on gas/size of van.
I understand what you´re saying about the air inside the van, but I want it to be my choice when I let air circulate. For example, I do not want motorway air, or other pollution, then I will wait until I am somewhere fresher. I love fresh air!
@@LaureninGermany Yep, could be I would have to have more holes in the floor, which in my case wouldn't be that much of a problem because I had already examined my options there for the heating pipes. I have the diesel heater in a steel box under the rear end because I want an absolutely flat floor in case I need the car for transport. That was the single most complicated consideration in the whole conversion. But in the process, I have identified 4 possible spots for the holes for the cold and hot air pipes, so I have two left. ;-) But luckily, I decided against the camper registration when I made the conversion. It simply would have more disadvantages than advantages for me.
I would also be curious how they want to prevent that the exhaust fumes from the diesel heater don't get sucked up into the car. When I drilled the holes for the pipes, I had to plug the holes for the regular TÜV examination because I didn't have the time to immediately install the heater before the examination, and the examiner said I had to prevent engine exhaust to be sucked into the car. So, there seems to be some kind of a contradiction. ;-)
I love fresh air as well, but no car is airtight anyway. I have a simpler hatch than yours because there simply isn't any space for anything larger on my roof next to the solar panels. The only one fitting was one with forced ventilation, so I didn't have to think about it anyway. But since I have normal glas windows like in a normal car, I can't open them like camper windows. I have wind protectors in the front doors, so I can open the windows 1 or 2 cm when it's raining, but not more. So, forced ventilation through the hatch is necessary. It's a small space. The heater is a bit oversized for that size even on the lowest setting, so I have to have the hatch open sometimes anyway. In the autumn, I can manage with a small electrical heater limited to 100-150 W. No problem with my large battery. That's better than wasting fuel on heating. And when I have to choose between electrical heating that way and cooking a meal in the microwave, I choose to cook on the spirit cooker. ;-)

I always had to rush back from shows, but we can both do a lot of work in the van, so it’s a portable office, and I can stay somewhere a bit longer and explore! And have a lie in after a show. Sometimes it’s such a big build up and I‘m really tired the day after. I didn’t rwalise it before, but a lot of towns have motorhome parking areas for a nominal fee, it’s not just expensive campsites on offer.

@@LaureninGermany There is a middelalder festival in Oslo in 2024, I don't know when it is, and there are the Olavfestdagene /St. Olav festival in Trondheim( 28.7. -3.8.2024) and of course Bodø as Culture Capital 2024. Maybe you should visit Norway again this year😄
That´s most definitely the plan! Trondheim and Oslo was great; Bodo I didn´t see (sorry I can´t find the o with the / on my keyboard!). There were so many impressions, I´d love to go again and not be in quite such a stunned state the whole time, from the amazingness.

If you come to Bodø (on my keyboard I can switch betweeen the different. languages) and if you have the time, take the Rv 17, it beginns near Trondheim and ends in Bodø, there is a camping side both near Saltstraumen or north of the town in Løb(direktion Løbshavn or Festvåg) . This part is great/beautyful...for me the best part and woth visiting. The program is under Bodo2024 and if you want to visit some museum, there is Nordlandmuseum , just google it, and its Samiland/in German one more common word is Lappen.😃 I really hope, you can visit and some of your subscribers as well of course😀 but warning: The weather can be tricky and rain, cold , but it Norway. Midtnightsun season is in May ( round about).🤩

Dear Lauren, good to have you back and congratulationsto yaur new, now yellow campervan. Don't be to cross with the TÜV-guys: theonly positive thing that can be said about carbon monoxide poisoning is, that, supposedly you don't feel a thing.
I guess that it's now time for a winter break for your lovely campervan. Why don't you use the time and have a second electrical circuit installed, with a second battery the sole purpose of which is to provide electricity for cooking and a little fridge. It has to be a separate circuit although running on the same car generator otherwise you take the electricity from the starter battery which might lead to an unpleasant surprise.
No gas, no forced venting 😉

No winter break for Flóki! I‘ve been and will be staying in the van when I travel for work. It’s marvellous. No unpacking. So wish me luck in the snow when I have my Christmas shows!

So I decided: I want to back on the road.
with a bed, a heater, and a kitchen inside.
= no more tent camping.
So I checked and searched monthes, to find a good and cheap one.
Until i found it , for 400 Euros only.
Old, dirty, need many fixes, and a new battery.
But no rust. Diesel-Engine, clutch and gear box in good conditions.
And very reliable modell.
And the version with a side slide door.
= larger inside. With a longer wheelbase.
a woman from germany, drove with this modell around Scotland, to Wales and Cornwall in GB. And London too.
And before, she was in Spain and Portugal with this car.
Never heard about "
Floki" in Norse mythology, but "Loke" maybe? Maybe Floki was a character in the Viking serie? Loke was not a good dude. I think it was Irish Munks first discovering Iceland. After possible the Greek guy. Great van and great video documentary anyway. I just enjoy it so much. Could watch forever. I am an expat myself, but i really do admire your lifestyle. When the day come when we go the final journey the only thing we bring is our memories from life on Earth. Subscribed! Well, I certainly took the inspiration from the Vikings series Flóki, who was - disturbingly - my favourite character. Not Loke! Nooo! Look, this is what I found about whether Flóki was real or not:
Flóki Vilgerðarson (also known as Hrafna-Flóki) was apparently the first to visit Iceland. Later Old Norse sagas have made him, famous, but the historicity of Flöki cannot be confirmed.

Hey Lauren, TÜV doesn't do random inspections and the police wouldn't know what to check if you were every stopped, so if I were you, I would re-attach the roof window seal and use the gas stove where ever. Since you will probably never have to go back to TüV to have your Campervan re-certified, rather just for the usual automotive tests, there is no reason to change things. Regarding the next video, I wouldn't change the channel name, since you are based in Germany. Hope you enjoy your campervan as much as I enjoy mine!

Yes, I‘m finding it hard to part with the „in Germany“. Somehow it feels wrong to change it.
Happy Easter, Lauren. Just a few thoughs about your next Scandinavian vacation. Sometime you mentioned that you and Franz would see Copenhagen and Århus. But why not drive all way trought Denmark , up to Frederikshavn and then take a ferry to either Oslo or Gothenburg? It only take 5 or 6 hours from the German border. If you book early both are very cheap. The fast ferry from Frederikshavn to Gothenburg takes only two hours. And Gothenburg (Sweden) is really a beautiful city. From Gothenburg you can drive in and out of both Sweden an Norway all the way to the North Cape. While driving in Denmark there are lots of shelters and cabins free of use provided by various Danish municipalities.
We actually did see Gothenburg, Hans- you‘re right, it‘s lovely! I had a huge cinnamon roll there.
We have a little problem with driving in and out of Norway, because our dogs would need a tablet every time we enter Norway, and it‘s unpleasant for them, hard on their little bodies. Once is ok, but I try to limit it to that. I think we have to go for the route over Alta when we head for Nordkap.

Vær ekstra oppmerksom når dere kjører i Danmark og Norge. Det har vært episoder de seneste uker i begge land hvor unge vandaler har felt store trær 🌲over veier. Many people got also crazy experiences with the german TÜV .
Mine is: the left window lifter does not work. So the TÜV checker decided: too unsafe to drive for.
I asked: why ?😮😅😂

Three different types of window lifter.
I had two lifters, and made one, who fits.
One guy in germany was so frustrated wit the german TÜV.
So he register his motorcycle in GB.
With the british MOT.
Oh dear. Bin froh, mit denen nix mehr zu tun zu haben. Da ist mir jede British MOT deutlich lieber. Auch wenn sie jedes Jahr fällig ist.

@@sisuguillam5109I think the ship takes something like 2 or 3 days and can get really rough! I saw a terrifying yt video! Yes, also the Faroe Islands don’t allow visiting pets. It’s fair enough. Plenty of other amazing places to visit without risking the environment. I needed to give the dogs a tablet for Norway, the same as for GB, actually.
Believe me, the TÜV has no fans, other than the people who work there. They think they can afford to act as anal as they want, because its mandatory to have certain things checked by them and get their ok. In the past it was even much worse, because they had the monopoly for that, but in recent years there is DEKRA and some other institutions who are in competition with the TÜV. So people can chose where they want to go for the inspections and such.
Tip: never tell them anything. Why did you mention the portable gas cooker? If they ask, just say you eat in restaurants. And if the window is leaking, just put the seal back in, until you have to go to the TÜV again.

Lauren, i do not know TUV. I thought the rules for autocampers was the same all over Europe. By EU standards. Even Norway which is not an EU country follows those rules. In Denmark the rules are quite easy. At least for camping trailers. A camping trailer have to be gas tested every time the vehicle change owner, and cars every second year. I know that a camping trailer is a hell to drag around. But it really is a little home away from home. Why dont you get both? An autocamper for shorter trips, and a camping trailer for long trips?Just a suggestion. Dragging around on the Autobahn with a camping trailer must be like hell, of course. And it is a little bit difficult even in Denmark. But in Norway? It is a cake walk.
Oh, be happy that you don´t know the TÜV! At the moment a caravan wouldn´t be in the budget, it was quite something to finally buy this van! There´s video about that, here: ruclips.net/video/56kpzqjOyik/видео.html I´m not saying never, though. I could imagine it would be lovely one day.
I also like knowing I can move on immediately, not needing to go outside or anything...maybe when I´m more experienced I will be more relaxed, but I tend to be someone who always needs a clear escape route!

You tube is also a kind of search engine. Maybe it improve ratings if you take down your oldest videos for a week and then upload them again ? RUclips might then regard them as "new content". You have lots of fans/subscribers now compared to 10 years ago. Remember RUclips is all about selling ads/commercials. Maybe even work on marketing "Lauren Frances" and "Voice Passion" the names/brands? If i search RUclips for your name, many "Lauren" or "Francis" and even "Lauren Francis" come up before you. Having your bio on Wikipedia, like you do, is great. SEO is difficult of course, because both RUclips and Google keep their algorithms secret. Just some thoughts. Have a nice day 🙂

Hi Lauren; I've watched your video several times now and had different thoughts.
Basically, it is good to avoid moisture and “gas accumulation” inside the motorhome. Moisture leads to mold and gases can be unpleasant or even deadly, depending on the situation. In Germany, poisonous gases are flavoured. Is that also the case in Norway? Can you smell the smell of the camping stove? If so, then you're welcome to open the window and turn on the ventilation.

If the fan rotates while driving, there must be a draft here. Does it possibly already contain the required forced ventilation? Take a look at the data sheet...
If so, ask yourself the follow-up questions: Do you still have the second window seal? Was that a rubber seal with a profile or a foam track? Can the original seal be reinserted?
To: 5:32 Does the water from the leak only come in while driving through the rain or the fog or even when the mobile home is stationary? Has the leak only occurred since the seal was removed?
Background to the question: The lack of a seal creates a cold bridge where air moisture can easily condense. But if the seal is poor, moisture can also squeeze through between vehicle roof installation windows. In order to distinguish between them, I had already built moisture detectors using painter's mask up tape and the water-soluble ink from a fountain pen. Paint a piece of tape with the fountain pen (circle or two lines on top of each other). If the ink runs or the tape falls off, you know that moisture is at work here. However, I also discovered that the selected inks are no longer water-soluble after drying, so try them out first. For the test, I would stick several independent “detectors” on the inside of the window reveal and block the draft from the outside with better (weather-resistant) adhesive tape. Now when the leak stops, the water from the leak is condensation. If the detectors show moisture, there is also condensation. In addition to the seal, a heat-insulating cover such as under the fan also helps here.
If the moisture continues to penetrate, I would worry about installing the window correctly. I couldn't find any exhaustive instructions on this on the internet, which is why I suspect that this was delivered with the product.
