I feel like pipes for rubies made it too easy to get characters so they removed it so that people can have more fun instead of making it all dependent on RNG.
It definitely was more balanced though cause not only were you trying to get the spotlights but you’d get dupes of commons and supers too. Once you maxed those out they would give coins to which you could use to buy tickets in the shop. The new system feels stingy with how expensive things are
