I deleted all social media five years ago I have some pictures of fish on my phone I share with family, but a true fisherman‘s going to fish regardless because they love the activity I’m happy catching a fish or not. fishing has saved my life multiple times and I truly believe that. I appreciate your guys hard work you put into these videos because when I’m not Fishing, I’m watching Fishing or thinking about Fishing and you guys allow me to have something good to watch 🤘
Glad to hear you still like and learn from bass fishing. If I only fished for trout, I could not fish very often. Basic skills ought to transfer across fishing situations. Thanks for sharing your perspectives.
Great stuff Fiure out a name, or don't. I've had fun sharing the first 3 without a "brand", just the Slide Inn group trying to help. Appreciate you guys
I love your philosophy 😉☕️☕️ That’s why Joyce and I drove across the country I wanted to met ya. And so glad we did. Thanks for all you and the crew does👍
Listening half asleep on the couch and you brought up the topic of curve casting and practicing, Perked me right up! One of the most satisfying experiences fly fishing - throwing a curve cast to a rising fish combined with a well timed tip wiggle while also throwing an upstream mend and having the fish take. I think I'll take the rod out in the snow field here and practice some casting, Thanks for the inspiration !
16:3816:40 Fishing that last hour of daylight is by far the best advise you've ever given, especially if you're after big trout. Enjoy your tying videos!
The Eat is the addictive drug of fishing. The anticipation, and the thrill of it is in large part what drives us back again and again a thousand time over to the river.
I'd vote for Dungeon Talk, or DDT Double Dungeon Talk. Some of the insight shared with the whole hunt aspect is so true. I quit rifle hunting and switched to Bow hunting to challenge myself. I switched from gear fishing at 50 to fly fishing to challenge myself. It's all about the adventure or the hunt, not the reward. Today's instant gratification society just doesn't get it! Anyway, great podcast, I'm gonna keep tying and fishing for the adventure, and I hope others will follow suit!
I love this podcast series and please keep doing them. There’s tons of keyboard warriors out there that will hate for any reason. I get a ton of useful information by listening to these. Thank you Kelly for sharing your opinions and experiences.
A name suggestion for your podcast: On the Fly. I like what you do because you discuss what I call "the intangibles." Anglers seem to get caughtup in equipment, technical talk about gear, methods, different flies, yada yada yada, etc. It's all the peripheral observations and ruminating, the daydreaming and mind games that I find helpful and intriguing. I have guys ask me what I use most often, or what works best for me, and on and on. My stock answer is "fish the conditions." I get on the stream and stand there for twenty minutes just lookin at the water, sky, grasses, trees - try to get a handle on what world I'm in today, and "feel" the environment the trout are in. I watch and listen and even smell the air before I've decided what terminal tackle and fly, etc. I'm going to use, how I'm approaching the water. And it's other things, like constantly being aware of what's going on, and changing as the conditions change. It could be anything, from subtle temperature changes to almost undetectable changes in the flow. It's trusting my instincts and past experiences and acting on them. But mostly it's taking the time to let these things come to me. And I do practice fishing - on the water and in my head. Oner of my favorite places to "go fishing" is in the dentist's chair if I'm getting gas. I just turn my head into fishing a stretch of water and picking it apart. It's the head game of fly fishing that I love.
The best thing about going to Montana is the anticipation of throwing that streamer or that dry to maybe get that fish. When you get to the Madison it’s all about the walk and stalk to that run that maybe has that nice 24 inch brown. After that it’s all a bonus. People who are true fly fisherman are the ones who talk less about the fish they caught and more about the fish they look forward to catching
As a reasonably skilled angler and member of the fly fishing industry the last 25 years i think so far this is one of the better flyfishing podcasts. You are constantly saying things that I've been saying for years and few will say..... Madison in July? Why even bother bringing your nymph box 😊
In 1997 I had a ten day trip to Montana and Idaho, guides every day. Drifted the canyon on Henry's Fork the spring creeks of Livingston and Yellowstone in the park . On the last day we were on Soda Bute, we saw a nice fish but couldn't get it to hit so I ask our guide to try. He got it on a few casts. That fish had the left side of its lower jaw hanging on by a thread. That day changed the way I have fished since. Way too many anglers far to fewer fish. It is why I fish streamers, the numbers are lower to begin with barbless means less damage. I likeKelly's rules. just because you meet todays rule limit doesn't mean you need to go home how about just watching the water? Excellent pod cast.
Love the podcast so glad Kelly started one!! Keep em coming! Also pod name suggestion - Thoughts From The Dungeon- great job Kelly the haters can suck it!!
Here's something I'd like to hear discussed: Moon Phases and if it really affects the day time fishing. Old wives tale is that fishing (in the daytime) is poor during the full moon. The rationale is that during the full moon it is so bright that the fish (not necessarily the big boys but all fish) see better and feed during the night so daytime fishing sucks. I'm referring to river fishing but like to hear if it also applies to stillwater.
One of my greatest memories of fish was a 20 inch rainbow that I had watched for 30 minutes feeding in about 16” of water. I stoked it within 5’ feeding.
Your the 1st one in years I heard talk about using horse hair as a short leader ,, I have been tying a fly for a long time that looks like a wooly bugger made from the main hair ,,but the cool thing about the main hair is that it undulates like it's alive when under water ,, I use it to catch smallies in the flat river here in michigan , they hit it as fast as they would a hellgrammite ,,but remember this Mr Galloup you give this one away before I did LOL
“The Slide Cast”? Love all things Slide. Question for the podcast: is there a specific fish that haunts your dreams? And is there a species of fish that you want to hunt but haven’t had a chance to yet?
Kelly (or others) I don’t give a s. I’ve loved your recommendations on the use of a small bit of fluorocarbon for dry fly applications. My father struggles with this but I can only follow his lectures so much. I have noticed my knots failing more often with this material. I normally use clinch or improved. Local bass guide said use more wraps. I fish small stream trout water. Any suggestions or topic of interest for any cast. Have a great one. Sam
Loving the show gents! Quick question - I’m trying to transition the trophy trout streamer strategies to shallow fast saltwater for seatrout. Which streamers would best present an aggressive random darting twitch and suspend on pause? Follow up - what line/leader combo best presents those flies in water under 3’? Thx!
Do you have a methodology for choosing tippet size? You mentioned in a previous ep courtland fluoro but do you always go to 4x for nymphing or do you change based on conditions? Streamers? Swinging? Jigging?
I hardly ever take a picture. I enjoy the fact that I'm able to be on the river and throwing a line. And if nobody is getting anyone out of your show then there a idiot. Because Because in there small Brian they think they know it all. Keep it up guys.
I really enjoyed your rant on pictures. And the perfectly explained reason why the process of fishing is the reason to fish. I love photography. Ansel Adams and Elliot Porter were childhood heroes. Atkinson is a fly fishing photography master (and cherished friend). I love taking pictures. But not while fishing. I don't need pictures. I do want memories. Keep working on this podcast. It'll only go from good to great!
Don't call the podcast anything. That would be limiting. Just keep giving us your great information and stories. I'm still hunting for my 30. Thank you from the driftless Minnesota.
• “eat it or wear it your choice” •”A Cast Beyond the Mainstream” •“Tips to be a better fly fisherman so your wife doesn’t leave you.” “ A Broader cast” or “ A Broader Cast Broadcast” • “Advanced fly fishing for dummies” •“One More Cast”
If you need questions I’d love to hear what Kelly’s favorite rivers he fished in Michigan were and also some of his most memorable fish/experiences from Michigan.
I had no clue the keyboard warriors attack you guys, that's hilarious. I haven't been to Montana with my dad in a couple of years, but I'm looking forward to coming back eventually. I've caught some great brown trout with Kelly's advice and still am in Michigan. For the haters out there, you should really take notes, Kelly knows what he's doing.
I’m so stoked you guys mentioned my name idea!! Me and dad love listening to your any of your video’s on the way to the water, but have fell in love with this new “slide inn: streamer junkiez”😂 pod cast. Keep them coming! #StreamerJunkie’z
Watching Kelly is a breath of fresh air, his knowledge & skills are a treasure,he mentioned Flipp Pallott, both icons in this sport, like Kelly started my fly fishing journey in the 70's & saddens me to see so many legions passing,Kelly is real yes he talks a little to much, but who's to judge, his rambling is very entertaining & if you listen closely you'll pick up bits & pieces of information on this sport & its history, tight lines & bent rods 🤙 🇺🇸
Loving the podcast, one thing that would be helpful is if Kelly could not keep his hand in front of his mouth while he talks. Kelly you are the man keep plugging away.
I figure at this point you guys just keep the bit and open every episode with “welcome back to the podcast we don’t have a name for” ultimately to transition into the main topic after saying “maybe we’ll pick one, maybe we won’t”
Galloup’s B. A. S. S. , Bad Ass Shit Show or B. S. S. , Bull Shit Show. I haven’t counted but the number of times he says bullshit or full of shit needs to be in the name of the show.
Looking at pics of big fish is about as interesting as looking at a co-workers baby pictures. And FWIW, I’ve spent a lot of time helping with population data surveys on “my” river and big fish tend to shrink from the time they get netted to the time they go on the measuring board. There are a whole lot of “2 footer” trout that people have caught that won’t tape out in reality at 20. And it doesn’t matter.
Kelly’s insights and videos are awesome. However this is a mediocre video in my opinion. It is way too long. It is extremely rambling, stream of consciousness, and totally unstructured. Somebody should have edited this down to make tighter and less wasteful of the viewers time. The interviewer has great potential and asks interesting questions and offers fine observations. However he needs coaching and guidance to produce a high quality video in my opinion. I stay at the Slide Inn each year, use their outstanding guides, spend way too much money at SlideInn Fly Shop. I watch and enjoy every video of Kelly and his outstanding staff. I have the highest respect for Kelly’s innovation and incredible skills. Unfortunately in my opinion this video was too unstructured, too rambling, way too long, and needed better editing.

Really enjoying these so far. Keep the info and stories coming!
“Put your time in and love the time.”
Perfectly describes fly fishing for muskies. For me it is all about the fishing.
Great, just great Kelly wants us all to fish like old timers.
FireSlide Chats
We need the "Hunt for a 30" part 2!! 🙂
Always helps me out, thanks !
Love the podcast so glad Kelly started one!! Keep em coming! Also pod name suggestion - Thoughts From The Dungeon- great job Kelly the haters can suck it!!
Anybody who thinks Kelly has a big ego should go into his shop and watch him talk to his customers. The guy is pure class.
You’re allowed to have an ego when you’re the GOAT. Real recognizes real.
The true GOAT does not need the big ego, that’s what makes Kelly the true GOAT.
Hunt the fly is great! Kelly taught me how to hunt a streamer in his videos

I take photos of fish based on how beautiful they are and the surrounding nature we get to fish in.

Quick question. How du you make that horsehair tippet? Greetings from Denmark.
Do you have a methodology for choosing tippet size? You mentioned in a previous ep courtland fluoro but do you always go to 4x for nymphing or do you change based on conditions? Streamers? Swinging? Jigging?
