I love this!!! This was my inspiration for a Mother’s Day gift I think she will love it! I love how mine turned out btw it was sooo much easier to follow than other tutorials that I found
That was a game-changer for me, sealing the tape edges. I've also found that if you are taping over a multi-color background you can seal the tape edges with a clear varnish instead.
I also have trouble with blending but I keep practicing and I thinks a litter easier to blend colors that are near each other on the color wheel I haven’t really tried other colors (example blending red and green)
Thanks so much for your video and for sharing your craff. I tried this out yesterday with different colours: teal, blue, yellow & green. I wasn't brave enough to use the exacto knife but improvised. It came out perfectly. Thank you so much
Wow amazing ❤️ Few questions - Did you let color dry after sealing edges with background color? Also when did you removed tape, before or after color is dry?
Thanks! I do let the paint dry between layers. In the video it looks like I go straight from one coat to the next, but there is some time in between. I also sometimes use a small fan to speed up drying. I also recommend letting the paint dry at least 10 minutes before removing tape, I find that the tape is easier to remove when it is not fully wet still, and you still get the same sharp edges.
@@ShayArt What kind of tape did you use? Some masking tape has a more aggressive adhesive/glue on it and is more likely to pull away paint. The type of paint also matters, I get good results with medium-quality paints like Liquitex of Lukas Cryl. If you use low-quality acrylics they do not have the same level of adhesion to the canvas.
@@ShayArt There are also tapes that are designed for delicate surfaces. I don't particularly like those, but if you are having a problem with paint tear-away, it might be worth trying a delicate-use tape.
Very gently. 😁 Practice on an old canvas or other surface to get a feel for how much pressure you need to apply to cut the tape. The tape is much thinner than the canvas, so it takes much more pressure to get through canvas than tape. So go slowly and use the least amount of pressure needed to just get through the tape.
So beautifully done..also so easy.. did you use water with acrylic colours or not ? And how come the acrylic is so shiny ? Suggest something which can be used at last for shinings in painting
The canvas itself was bought pre-stretched. I usually buy canvases from a local art supply store. The frame is actually just a mockup of a frame, I didn't actually frame this painting. But that style of frame is called a "floating frame."
I really liked this design and color combination. I really wanted to do it.. but confused about what colors you used exactly and what was the silver thing u used to paint canvas.. can u please post the name and brands of the paints u used..
Usually, yes, but you could remove the tape any time, even when wet. Just be careful removing wet tape, sometimes the tape can flip over and get the wet paint on the canvas.
I did this on a canvas, and it's possible to do it on other materials. But keep in mind that masking tape when removed my tear more delicate surfaces. Masking tape directly on paper or cardstock would probably damage the surface.
It will turn brown if you over-blend the paint. But if you just lightly blend and try to keep some separation in the colors, they will stay bright and vibrant.
Nope, you can use any colors you wish. I wanted a metallic silver look to this one, so that's the color I chose. But you can do this with a variety of foreground and background colors.
The tape is much thinner and lighter than the canvas, so you can cut the tape without going through the canvas. It just takes some practice to know how hard to press with the blade.
My masking tape is not sticking well even after painting on it 😔 Do I need to start over, can I share my canvas photo with you, I am new to painting, I liked this one a lot, thought to do it on my own and then gift it, please guide
Sure, connect with me via instagram (@mikemcdonaldart) or my website mcdnld.com and I'll try to help. If the tape isn't sticking, the adhesive on the tape might be too weak. Not all masking tapes are the same, some use a light adhesive to be gentler to the surfaces they are placed on, but that can also result in the tape not sticking to paint or canvas securely. I recommend 3M Scotch masking tape or similar medium-grade all-purpose masking tape, or blue painters tape.
May I try to answer? I think he’s doing that each time to get an even amount of space between the areas he’s trying to cover and the areas he’s painting over. Correct me if I’m wrong please I don’t want to be answering someone’s questions wrong
Please tell the which type of brush you have used ,brush number and what you have used to cut the masking tape . If it can cut the canvas? Please reply as soon as possible. I would be grateful if you reply today.
Definitely use masking tape, other types of tape will likely damage the paint. You need to use something that is just strong enough to create a good sealed edge so paint doesn't bleed under the tape line, but not too strong that the tape adhesive damages anything when you remove it.
At 2:09 in this video you'll see a layer of silver paint going over the tape. This seals the tape edges and reduces color "bleed" under the tape. If you paint over the tape with the same color you used as the background under the tape, you should have a lot less of a problem with color bleed.
For a rectangle you can keep the same basic format but just expand the tape horizontally left and right. So you will end up with more pattern to the left and right, the format won't be square anymore but you would still have a centered layout. The only added challenge is that you can't use the corners to find the center like I did, you will have to measure it. So for the first pieces of tape, instead of using the corners as your starting points, measure from the corners horizontally to find your starting points.
I use the tape as a spacer to measure the gaps. You could measure out the tape distances more precisely, but it is very time-consuming. I prefer to just use the tape itself as a general measurement of how far apart each piece should be.
Any metallic color would give a similar result. As long as you choose a color that has is a significant contrast from the foreground color(s), it will work well.
Masking tape is definitely the thing to use for this. you need something that can block the paint and make clean straight lines, but also be easily removed without damaging the base layer of paint. Masking tape can do that, other types of tape can be too sticky, not able to seal the edges, or could damage the painting.
This can work on any size/shape canvas, you just might want to use wider tape for larger canvases. For non-square canvases, the pattern might have to change slightly to add more diagonal rows horizontally or vertically. It's great that you and your father tried it, I'd love to see how it turned out! 😃
Holy hell, this looks amazing! Does it matter what type of paint you use to seal the tape, or is acrylic fine to use? Do you find that it keeps the paint from bleeding through the tape the majority of the time?
Thanks! If you're using acrylics for the rest of the painting, acrylic will also work perfectly for sealing the tape edges. It definitely helps with preventing bleed-through. I can't say it works flawlessly, but it makes a huge difference when you seal the tape vs. not sealing it.
This can be adjusted for A4 or any size layout. You will just end up adding more lines with tape to fill out the entire canvas. But yes, it will definitely work.
Love this! Great tip on painting to sealing the edges. That has helped me a lot and reduced touch up paint significantly! 😊
Awesome! Glad it has helped you.
