Robert. Crazy that you never see any Lou Reed albums out in the wild. Over here in Stockholm, Sweden. My second hand stores have almost all of them all the time. And most of them around 10 bucks (except US originals of Transformer and a couple of more). I am a big Lou Reed myself. This is my list. !. Transformer. 2. Berlin 3. Coney Island 4. New York 5. Lou Reed. Also his collaboration album Drella 1990 (all themed around Andy Warhol) with old VU friend John Cale is amazing.
Transformer is merely my #2 as well. This is because of my rather unorthodox #1...the 1972 self-titled debut. I love the raw and direct straight ahead rock n roll vibe of that album. Love the dry production, the live-in-the-studio sound, and I love all those VU outtake songs. Way underrated LP in my opinion. Looking forward to the Guncles meet up video! Oh, and Mike looks really cute in his new glasses.
The bassist who played that eternally great line on 'Walk on the Wild Side' is *Herbie Flowers.* He may have the best bassist-name ever. & if you want more notorious albums, Robert, try Yoko Ono's 'Fly' & Peter Brotzmann's 'Machine Gun.'
I was thinking that the only Lou Reed song I knew was Walk On The Wild Side, but then someone mentioned Perfect Day. I don’t remember any other songs. Some great insights from each of you about these albums. Much enjoyment.
Appreciate the wide mix, and I guess that's the beauty (and ugliness) of Lou's discography. Agree with you all that dark and depressing Lou is my favorite (Berlin, Magic & Loss), but of course New York is up there too. Appreciate you spending time talking about some albums that get dragged a bit and bringing more credit to them. Cheers friends!
I know them all like the back of my hand (huge LR and VU fan), my 70's & 80's top 5: 1. New York 2. Berlin 3. Transformer 4. The Blue Mask 5. Tie between Street Hassle & Sally Cant Dance. The problem I have with his debut album, is that the VU versions of all the VU songs are far superior, to me. New Sensations is pretty good too, his remaster sounds better than the original, toned down some of the 80's studio crap, and it did pretty good because of I Love You Suzanne, which also had a good run on MTV. Robert, the singles from NY were Romeo Had Juliet and Dirty Blvd. those were also the videos on MTV. Metal Machine music and the early Throbbing Gristle (such as Second Annual Report) stuff go together as the start of that kind of noise stuff. As for Lulu, it was based on 2 plays, and David Bowie said he loved it, and that it was one of his favorite Lou albums. I also loved his 90's output. Mike, you can still get that New York box on amazon, brand new, cheap!
Really cool video, and good picks all around. A bit surprised there was no love for "Coney Island Baby". That one wasn't very high on my list for a number of years, but I've been listening to it quite a bit lately. I guess it just started to click for some reason. A good, if not great, batch of songs, and I think it is one of his better sounding solo albums.
I used to listen to metal machine music as a very moody teenager in the seventies, then a “friend “ stole it from me and sold it, I was of two minds. I believe the first live record is possibly the best live record ever
Street hassle is a classic. At one time it was my favorite lou album. Nowadays I’d say Coney Island baby then berlin and first album then street hassle.
Hey Rob. I wish to apologise for my post. I replied to you on the Underworld video but I assume you didn't bother reading coz you couldn't be bothered to read any more nonsense from me. Don't blame you. Anyway, please read when you have literally nothing else to do. Sorry and keep up the good and guncle work....

I love Songs for Drella
🙂 We have three matches: Transformer; New York; Lou Reed. I must give Berlin a new listen.

One of my favorite Lou Reed songs is from Growing Up In Public - Think It Over. Also like Teach the Gifted Children

He's got many terrific songs. Satellite of Love might be my favorite.

Cremation from Magic and Loss is an amazing song.
Magic & Loss is brilliant

Street Hassle was a masterpiece as was Berlin.
Definately should have Magic and Loss in top 5.
"Magic and Loss" is from 1992, so it wasn't eligible.
@@vinylcommunityguncles4986 oh, those pesky rules, lol
Street Hassle.
