What did Queen Elizabeth II do in the Second World War?

- In April 1944, young Queen Elizabeth - then Princess Elizabeth - turned 18. Her teenage years had been against the backdrop of the Second World War. Elizabeth was determined to ‘do her bit’ for the war effort, as so many of her peers were. Within a year of turning 18, Elizabeth would sign up for the Auxiliary Territorial Service. It was an unprecedented decision - this would make her the first woman in the Royal Family to become a full-time member of the armed services.

MY grandmother worked as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross during WWII. Very few women knew how to drive, let alone fix a car. As the daughter of a garage owner, she knew how to do both. She and my mother picked up wounded British soldiers from the Brooklyn Navy Yard and drove them to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Like Queen Elizabeth, my mother considered these experiences to be a seminal experience of her youth. And she would often astound car mechanics when she brought her car in to be serviced. These young women were quietly proud of their contributions which did so much to help ensure victory. They considered it a privilege to have performed their duties.
My uncle was a conshie and an ambulance driver in WW2 also. Here is a clip of him driving his ambulance.
ruclips.net/video/QYo-FI8K4Vo/видео.html
You mother was very brave, as you can see they drove under heavy barrages.
Definitely something to be proud of.
My dad’s mom was a nurse in the army
& you think the queen did all that too😂😂
Baddass
Chauffeur to the Queen: "Mam, the limo broke down again. I will get our mechanic. "
Queen: "Nonsense! Get out of my way and hand me that wrench!"
Thats not far from the truth. Right into her 60s, she worked on her Land Rover whenever anything went wrong
The Queen would never call it anything but a spanner!
She to this day will occasionally describe herself as "a mechanic"
Now all I can picture is here casually talking to the royal engineers in the motor pool to check up on their progress from time to time.
I remember one story of when the king Saudi Arabia came to Britain and she drove him. She doesn't have a driver's license because, well, she's the queen. And in his country women were not allowed to drive at that time. And she drove quite fast that it scared the king. But she told him of her experience and told him that she was licensed mechanic.
It is said that this incident influenced Saudi Arabia into allowing women to drive.
Now I understand why Queen Elizabeth is loved so much by her people. I thought it was just a blind stupid love just because she is the queen. But she is not "just a queen". She did so much to serve her people. Mad respect for her. How I wish there are more people like her.
She wasn't kidding when she promised to give all of her life, whether long or short, to the service of her country. She is a unique monarch in that respect. It was not about power for her, but steadfast, enduring, dedication to her special role as queen of the United Kingdom. She took on the role with humility and grace and has never faltered in her dedication in all her long reign as queen of England. She is remarkable.
@@maryvalentine9090 Oh baloney! Did she "serve" when she chose her mother over Philip? Did she "serve" when she had a kid with a lover? Did she "serve" when she continued on as head of the church while committing adultery and ignoring her vows? She LOST the right to head the church in 1959, but continued on as if it was her RIGHT to have two husbands. She kept her lover (Lord Porchester) on her payroll so she could see him every day and travel the world with him.
He was MARRIED but that didn't bother the Queen at all. She "stuck it to Philip" until Porchy died in 2001. Andrew CHANGED the family dynamic and broke the hearts of Charles and Anne (who loved their father and knew their mother cheated on him). Because of Andrew, the Queen was blackmailed by Diana and she destroyed Charles reputation (because she could). Charles did NOT cheat on Diana (until AFTER she had a child by a lover). Because the Queen had Andrew with a lover, Diana decided that she was the same as the Queen (having a son with a lover) and demanded the Queen force Charles to "accept" Harry, as the Queen had forced Philip to accept Andrew. Diana DESTROYED Charles by lying about him because she could. It amused her to manipulate the press to her own liking. Charles could NOT defend himself OR Diana would turn on his mother. Charles protected his mother (and monarch) at huge personal cost. He is a treasure, but most people are dim and defend Diana.
Queen Elizabeth also used her driving skills in 1998, to take King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia for a drive of her estate in Scotland, lol. Please remember that in 1998, women were not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia... and that Liz decided to drive fast..
the propaganda was strong
@@cjosborne9430 This all sounds possible, but do you have any evidence to support these claims? Or are you just venting your theories?
I'm impressed of how brave Queen Elizabeth was at 18 during the war and how she managed to learn everything that they taught her. She was a mechanic! That toughness what made her a good Queen. May she rest in peace 💐
When I learn of this, I was thinking to myself... Never once had I seen nor heard a real king, queen, prince or princess fighting along side others in a war other than in movie and anime.

@@PaulGamingPUBG how has that got anything to do with what I was talking about?
I really admire the fact that she insisted in doing as much as she could -- and that counts as part of the training that any head of state should have, probably the most valuable part! She's been serious, sober, and responsible her whole life, a real one in a million as heads of state go.
As a proud Irishman I have always seen something good in this woman and I believe she has done alot more good than bad in her life. She was also a very pretty young woman with a nice smile and beautiful eyes. She still has the smile and eyes now at almost 100 years old.
I am an American. I have no ties to the United Kingdom or its realms. Yet today, I am...we all are... celebrating our Queen. Truly, we were lucky to live in a world that she graced for 96 years. Long live the Queen. Long reign to the new King. 🇬🇧👑😓
She is loved by many Americans.
Our queen? Lol
This is one absolutely exceptional woman.
There will never be another like her.
All the things she has done and have been through would have destroyed another woman or man.
God bless her.
What in the world has she "been through" that would have destroyed others? She has lived a life of complete luxury. She has NEVER prepared a meal, or ran a vacuum, or made a bed. She does NOT do a lick of "volunteer" work. She is the master of her own universe, answering to no one. She had a child with a lover (when she was 33) and didn't give a rip what it did to her other children. She had TWO husbands (in essence) because she traveled the world with both of them. Her lover was married; she didn't give a rip. She "pretended" to be a mechanic, but never worked a day as a "mechanic.'" She made that film to manipulate OTHER women into working. (She has you completely fooled and singing her praises and ignored the LIES and GREED and IMMORALITY of her life.)

My mother trained in the ATS at Camberley during the war too, qualifying as a lorry driver and later, ambulances. At the age of 70, two years before her death, she drove a large lorry to help an Australian friend bring in the farm's harvest when his regular driver was taken ill.
Shes a legend!
This is fantastic footage and well put together. Honorable mention must also be given to the women who worked in intelligence gathering. Especially the Y Service and Bletchley Park. Because of the nature of the work even their parents were not allowed to know what they did. Women & men of honour respected the Official Secrets Act to the end of their lives. No wonder we call them the greatest generation. God bless and care for our gracious and noble Queen.
I watched series "Absolute History: The farm at war" (or something like that). In one episode they mentioned a couple in their 80's who only now (the 1990's) told each other their secret war work. One was a coatal watcher, the other a messenger carrier.
A great series, btw. People living the life.
One of my aunts in the Wrens was there
My wife was an Army Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) Analyst [98C] in the US Army (also known as the Vatican's "Archdiocese of the Military Services, USA") many years ago. She could not tell her family members anything about what she learned in her training (both MOS Training and while Mobilizing for OIF/OEF), until now. She did not last long in the military, however, because of her earnest and sincere desire for truth. [John 8:32 (KJV) And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.] And, she hated working outside of the home as a single woman in those years of military service. [Psalm 34:18 (KJV) The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.]
One has to study the news of the times to realize how many women were elisted in the war effort. The work would have not got done without them. Rosie Riveter writ large.
and now we have pride month n abortion rights
what a great insight into our Queen including all the other hard working women who all didi their share for the war effort. Long live the Queen, congratulations on reaching 70years of service.

I doubt that anyone loves Great Britain as much as does its Queen.
@A W De jure, Queen Elizabeth (or today King Charles) can dissolve the parliament and appoint the prime minister. He also has royal assent to legislations being passed in parliament. In a Republic, the President can veto or sign then enact laws. In the UK, it is the King who signs such laws.

I think the most touching part of the story is of her celebrating anonymously in the streets with other Londoners.
That's an experience I doubt any Royal after her has or will have the opportunity to have. I guess Harry can now but he doesn't want to! 😂
Yes I love how they showed this in the absolutely wonderful film A Royal Night Out.
Actually they have done that before with both William and Harry but that was when they were much younger, and they still got photographed, and of course Harry got in more trouble. Still though, it does show that they can still live outside a little bit, if they know how to. Makeup can do wooonders these days. LOL
I haven't seen it - but there was a movie made about this event called " A Royal Night Out " (2015 )
Wills and Harry--as well, I think--used to tool around in London and elsewhere, on a motor cycle, anonymously with a full helmet on his head. That's how Wills used to go to court Kate.
Amazing to think the Cockney would totally disappear under her reign.

Apparently, one time she was hosting the king of (I think) Saudi Arabia and, knowing that women weren't allowed to drive in his country, she took him for a drive in her jeep and hooned around the estate. 😂
@Charles White Boo hoo, cry to someone who actually cares🤣
@@veramae4098 Not totally true, King George was preparing to go with his family to Canada until King Leopold refused to leave Belgium following the occupation there and after that Churchill told George it would be damaging to morale as Dunkirk was going on at the same time.
Well, i am just flabbergasted!! I never knew this! This woman was just bad assed!! A Queen for 70 years, AND a trained Military Mechanic!! Awesome!!
The best Queen in the world. Love by millions.
I have loved Queen Elizabeth since I’ve been a child and I am not British I am an American. She has always had my respect she was an athlete, an accomplished equestrian, an intellectual and took the throne at a crucial time.
Rest well, Elizabeth ❤️
shes worked hard and deserved all the recognition b stowed in her platinum jubilee she put the part of great in Britain , thank you for your service of 70 years ma,am.
Rest in Peace, Queen Elizabeth II. ❤
Wow! I'm amazed, the "Queen", good to hear.
A woman of grace. God bless and hope to meet up again.
Learning to drive also laid the groundwork for her love of driving later in life. She takes great delight in scaring her passengers as she speeds around her estates.
What a gorgeous and strong young Lady she was during and after the war!
Still a beautiful and strong Lady today at 96 years old!
Happy 70th anniversary, Your Majesty. ❤
It saddens me a bit when I hear stories of celebrities when they meet the queen. She is living history. If I had met her at a party, I would immediately begin asking about the war, Winston Churchill, etc. (How did she feel when she heard Churchill's speeches?). Such opportunities lost. Most of them say the most dullest things and mock her.
One does not ask person questions from the queen -- or for that matter any stranger you meet.
@@Chuck0856 Yeah, as an American I'm pretty sure that doesn't fly with us. I'd show her respect, but I definitely would ask. I think my first question would be about Churchill, or truck engines.
I'm just starting my life as well. She's my inspiration.
OMG What a right and couragious thing Queen Elizabeth did by joining the Women's Auxiliary Forces and becomming an ambulance driver and mechanic and not letting her father or her royal rank shrink her from those duties. She showed she could be beatiful and do her part for the war effort just like every boy and girl her age. Not to mention seriously she was so pretty durring the war years As an American I definitely see in her what and why freedom is 100% worth it to fight for! I am sure that's why God made the double rainbow when her majesty passed this week. He knew he was about to welcome someone VERY SPECIAL to us all.
Rest in peace Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
Her majesty is what me called true queen .
Not some self proclaim tiktok influencer .
No wonder the Queen didn’t have a driver license, she was like the grandmother of automobiles, professional and experienced on Cars and trucks in those years, good job. May god bless the Queen
As am American whose ancestors threw off the royal yoke, I have no use for royalty. That said, I have a lot of respect for this Queen.
God Bless and keep her in His loving arms. As an old man/mechanic, I knew that the Queen became involved in a 'motor pool' at 18. Much to the shagrin of her parents, the King and Queen. As an American, I can't help but respect her for doing what she could for here country at a time when the country needed 'all hands on deck'.
And that's why she was awesome.
RIP Queen Elizabeth, I’m sure her wanting this experience made her a better person and Queen for all who came to know her.
Really wonderful clothes.. When I was a child even poor people could buy good quality fabric and pay skilled dressmakers nearby to make classic clothes and dress up like a queen.
No we poor could NOT pay for good quality fabric or pay for skilled dressmakers nearby to make clothes for us. Where did you dig up that fantasy?
@@Poliss95 Oh sorry! Im from Brazil;
And some decades ago people here have to learn manual skills to finda a job and we had a textile industry and large harvests of cotton and flax fiber.
A (not so) fun fact about our textile industrie is that some american imigrants came here after the Civil War to start enterprises and make fabric using the slave labor.
So one hundred years after that, we had all the conditions to buy good fabric and make good clothes. Brazilian housewifes had sewing machines and the best sewers could earn some extra money making women and child clothes to the neighbours.
Now people here buy the same rags that americans and londoners buy. Terrible design, cheap plastic fabric sewed in sweat shops from Asia. And the youngsters don´t learn how to sew anymore.
And idiots disrespect this gem of a lady 🤦♂️
Mark Felton had a video on this a few days ago. Worth watching
That guy is awesome
everything that bloke does is subtly pro Russian and anti western. His ten years working in China for the Chinese government gives the game away.
Stamford are you serious. Must be pretty subtle , I've watched most of his vids and I've never got that from Feltons vids

I believe we are known as from down under, Aussie through and through mate. Rushworth Victoria.
I have seen some of this before; Princess Lizz going out and celebrating with every one else, infact I think it may have been a short movie of maybe a doco.
If she did then I'm glad and she had all the right in the world to do so.

Pleased to meet you Michael.
Like I said Michael, I'm an Aussie OR I'm Australian. I live in country Victoria OR rural Victoria in Australia. May I ad that although it all happened before my time I am ashamed of how the Polish were treated post war after their contribution to the Battle of Britain. But that was political and not to do with the Monarchy. Stay safe mate.
