Nirvana's guitar tech, Ernie Bailey, is actually the man most deserving of the "mad scientist" recognition. He's the guy who had to assemble all of the various Frankenstein guitars from the bits and pieces of the gear that Cobain & Co. would smash to bits after nearly every gig, and/or hunt down cheap left-handed guitars at pawn shops and modify them to Cobain's liking.
"As you know, Kurt Cobain famously used [the equipment we have right here]..."
*Plays nothing even remotely Kurt Cobain-esque.*
Not picking up on the British humor there did you
Lol he did play a bit of Smells Like Teen Spirit at 2:23
That Smell Like Teen Spirit was painful.
Yes it was.
He didn't want to play it properly because of youtube copyright issues :P
Yeah lol!
would i be able to cover a song on my guitar then and post it on youtube? as long as i say song and band it is?
cheers bro
Pretty crap review. You guys should bother to learn a bit about how a stock Jag works and whats different about this one.
...Exactly! I don't own a Jaguar (, yet,) and I know more about Jaguars than these "Professionals", who represent Andertons Music / Rob Chapman...
Shut up nerds 🪨
It s fun as no one play the smells riff in a good way ^^
That rendition of Smells Like Teen Spirit made me die
I think Kurt might have used the tremolo on the beginning of Radio Friendly Unit Shifter..?
Bastian Doney he used a polychorus and bending the strings
Nope he used a rotovibe
It’s a Polly chorus
Polychorus
@@ViperBitenESP polychorus
You guys are awesome! Humor + Knowledge. Thank you!
Just FYI The Jaguar is a modified short (very short) scale Jazzmaster. The switch at the top is so you have 2 separate controls, one for rhythm and one for lead, a handy feature Leo Fender used to try and have solid bodies that would compete with hollow body Jazz guitars of the day.. Never took off with the Jazz players was eventually adopted by Surf guitarists of the 60s then evolved into the Jaguar (shortened the guitar, change the pickup switching system, and added Strat style pups). This Kurt Cobain version evolves it even further by kind of mashing it up with a Mustang.
who makes a video to review a Kurt Cobain signature Guitar and barely play a couple Grunge Style Riffs. So, I was expecting more. BAD.
I really love those old floating trems, my Jag has one and it's really solid, doesn't bugger up the tuning and sounds killer
This is great banter lads absolutely cracking stuff!
Maybe it was worth finding out a little bit about the Jaguar's lead and rhythm circuits before you make the video?
Best intro to a video ever.
"Crisp crunchy sound"
Me: ok this isn't KFC
Terribly agonizing g to sit through this “demo”. Then he goes on to say he’s a “big Kurt Cobain fan” but can’t even play the songs remotely like Kurt which isn’t too hard honestly.. horrible jokes.. didn’t use many effects Kurt used either.. altogether a bad review. Stop playing blues for Gods sake. He wasn’t a blues player. 🙄🙄
This is the most ridiculous review of the guitar I've seen. He can't even play the songs correctly and mocks it the whole time. What a douche
Ya not a fan myself
Just because kurt wasent a blues player dosent mean you only strictly have to play heavy stuff on that jag also hes showing the abilitys and sounds and genres so people can see what its able to do after all its a review. And also Kurt was a big fan of lead belly and hes a blues player.
i completely agree with you
Bet you dont even have a guitar
I am an American and I feel personally attacked by the way you played Smells Like Teen Spirit... Otherwise I love your guys videos :)
+Zachary Mueller What does the fact you are an American have anything to do with your comment?
+Rob Annable I guess cause Kurt was American idk
+Zachary Mueller I'm german and it did it to me too.....
I'm not even from Earth and it hurt me that Rob would do this to us
Welll this escalated quickly
Its an anonymous Fender guitar because Kurt got his guitars from all kinds of random places, when on the road or in pawn shops. They would go and buy interesting looking guitars because Kurt would get inspired by them and just play about on them and lo and behold, history is made.
But, it is actually just a hotrodded Fender Jag.
I play a Fender Jazzmaster, that has the same top circuit. The bottom-circiut does originally control both of the pickups(like on the Kurt Cobain guitar), and the top circuit controlls only the neck pickup, but in runs it trough some more bassey pots, to get a more jazzy sound i think. The jagguar also got this feature, because it basicly is jazzmaster with other pickups, and a bit more chrome hardware.
I must say , it sounds awesome !!!! Im defo gunna get one one day !
@22FretsIsNotEnough No - I took a jet lag to the knee & missed the morning shoot!!
i feel you guys across the pond dont know enough about seattle grunge
wait the tiny terror was introduced in 2006, and Kurt died in 1994... makes sense that he would use it 12 years before it came out...
I'm quite suprised of how good this actually sounded. :O
I bought a Squire Jaguar (70s Vibe) for about 400.- CHF (swiss currency). Then I replaced all the pickups with the ones used in the Signature model (before that, of course, I milled the pickguard and the body) and replaced the circuit with a 3-way switch (like on the Signature guitar). Then I replaced the bridge (also like on the Signature guitar) and bored a third hole to install a third poty. now I have the Whammy still replaced by a Fender original and the Lockpicks (as on the Signature guitar).
i have also replace all the nobs with Fender Telecaster nobs and it was done!
The whole thing took a week and now sounds like the original. and I have hammt haft 500.-CHF saved
The guitar was bought by Kurt in a pawn shop, he didnt change anything apart from the pups. Nobody knows where it came from as the flight case (with the name of the original owner on it) was thrown away. He didnt get it custom made by fender, someone else got a basic HH jag and customised it to fuck. :-) Love you Chappers!
BTW, Stick said he keeps knocking that switch, and it seems a bit pointless having 2 pickup switches on a guitar. Kurt used to gaffa tape the toggle switch down in the bridge position and use the mini one above to switch pickups. If you search for kurt cobain aneurysm in youtube and watch the video from cobain9489 there is a shot that shows it at 1:23
peace out!
i got one. love it. i'm a small man so a small scale is just... lovely.
*not sure if trolling or just misinformed* KC did salvage the dumped Jaguar. This one however is a tribute guitar, not a custom. It has the same specifications as Kurts, but mass produced.
The top set of controls is the rhythm section. It was meant to give Fender players the same option as Gibson players, in having both rhythm & lead channels with the flip of a switch. Is the neck pickup, the bottom set is for both, with a switch to add a bypass sort of option. This one is different from other Jaguars in it's three way switch rather than on/off switches for bridge & neck pickups.
Cool guitar. Kurt was a genius.
Kurt bought the guitar how it was,it belonged to martin jenner, cliff richards guitarist. He was the one who modded it.
Kurt rig was a follows
Amp: Mesa Boogie
Cab: Marshall
Effects: BOSS DS-1 & DS-2, Pollychours, Small Clone
Strings: Dean Markley gauge 10-52
Picks: Dunlop tortex .60mm
I'm left-handed, and I'm quite impressed. Gonna have to check this thing out.
7:57 Captain is a guitar player! This man is an imposter!
Kurt didn't design the guitar. He found it out of an LA trader paper. It was some ones project that's why it is set up so funky. They make it sound like he designed the lay out of the guitar. Only feature he might of changed was the pickups.
He did put his own touch on this guitar. For one, it has redundant wiring for tone and tone slaving before the output jack.
Second, the middle tone know was added. Finally, he filled all of his top switches down to the pickguard.(both mustang and jag with the switches.)
He also swapped out the pickups for the DiMarzio pickups.
The neck isn't stock as well... that's a strat neck and the truss adjustment screw is below the pick guard. You have to remove the neck for truss rod work.
no i read he bought that guitar by checking an add of it from the L.A. Recycler, and he'd go check it out and bought it, he was obviously appealed to him because it was a lefty, it also came in a flight case... sorry for any grammar faults, im from europe (:
good thing Lee cleared that up right at the start.
Chappers is so hate-able
If you know how to properly setup a Jag/Jazzmaster trem, they are some of the best in the world. Mine NEVER goes out of tune.
one of the few bodies that has a square cut back in the trem route.
Hate "aged" or "reliced" guitars. It's a lie. Take your own licks, pay your own dues.
it's different if it's a sig though because it's supposed to be like the artists guitar
Kurt Cobain never played the orange tiny terror because it wasn't invented until 2006. Kurt used either a Mesa Boogie Mark 3 with a Marshall 1960 lead cab, a 1982 Fender twin reverb combo amp, or a red Marshall mini stack. He used a 1977 electro harmonix echoflanger, MXR phase 100, univox super fuzz, electro harmonix poly chorus, boss DS-1, a big muff, and occasionally an FX69 grunge pedal. I love your guys reviews, but please do your research.
yea man they were way off on their research, or did they even do any lol.
Humour: the quality of being amusing or comic, especially as expressed in literature or speech.
Ever hear of it?
+Bruzrk gro-Malog this isn't the only video they did on the Kurt Cobain guitars they stated this in
Dude what are you talking about? EVERYONE knows that Cobain used a Tiny Terror with a Marshall Cab, while wearing a headwrap. Go back and look at the live footage, bro.
Mitchell Mayes
Running joke: A humours anecdote that is used multiple times.
Ever hear of it?
Love the binding on the neck!
it's not an EXACT replica. kurt cobain had a piece of duck tape over the toggle switch.
That was his other guitar the jaguar he didnt have the tape on his jagstang
that was only there so that he wouldn't accidentally hit the switch and put it on the neck pickup when he was playing live. Kurt just left it like that because he only ever used the bridge pickup. It doesn't really matter.
Matt jordan His actual Jag was quite different from both the fender versions. The body paint is worn, the pickup routes are wrong, the headstock is wrong, the bridge is wrong, the trem plate is wrong and the pickups are sort of wrong and the pickguard is wrong. It's not that accurate tbh.
Doctor Sislak 😂
@@ViperBitenESP he actually had tape on his jag.
That's not the captain...
+FacePlant But you are indeed a captain obvious
Kurt actually didn't make many changes to the guitar himself, he bought it at a guitar shop and it had all of those weird controls
But kurt never used an orange tiny terror. He used Boogie heads and marshall cabs, and a twin reverb. He also used Randall heads at first, too.
Tiny terrors didn't exist back then 😂
Glorious intro!
that intro was way better then 1 direction
Nice job as stand in Captain from Mr Stick!!
Jesus Christ that roar sound when he says jaguar scarsd the shit out of me jeeez
Also, afaik Kurt didn't fit a single one of the mods himself - he bought it like that. He wasn't much of a tinkerer, by all accounts. He tended to buy stuff because it was cheap and left-handed and weird and more or less left it alone (unless smashing them to bits counts as modding them).
charly88888888 So much of this comment is wrong.
That's completely false, all of his mustangs(a very good chunk if not the majority of his guitar collection by all acounts) were heavily modded.
i got mine yesterday and i have to say it is the best and most versitile guitar i have ever played so get one quick before they are all gone
He did not play the smells like teen spirit riff right BUT he did not play it wrong! I'm guessing we don't have some decent guitar players here because he played it in a different OCTAVE.
Kurt Loves the Idea of a signature model, he had a Jagstang made by a luthier before Fender even ever approached him about it, and he LOVED the Jagstang. .. so there. it's well documented
Super !
ROLLING IN HIS GRAVE
@jakeb That power chord is an A5. He played an A5. Just not in the standard shape.
Stick is a epic as always.
going between this and the superbowl.
8:25
Awesome riff
Anyone know the song?
Kurt Jaguar had a black Schaller bridge and he taped up the fiddly control thingies. \m/
The holes may be in the back of the neck were the fender tuners were replaced, but there have never been screws in them... -1 accuracy points lol
He didnt taught himself to play left handed. Some people uses both hands in some diffrent activites.I am like that too.I write with my right hand, but i play basketball with my left hand,i play soccer with my left foot,i am lefty in boxing etc. This just comes from your childhood you dont choose it.I didn't taught myself these things.
As long as you're not doing deep dive bombs the Jag/Jazzmaster trem system is actually pretty amazing. I love it. Its more responsive and comfortable to use than the trem on my Strat. Just listen to Nels Cline with his Jazzmaster. He gets incredible sound and effect out of it. Chapman just doesn't like trem systems to begin so I wouldn't expect him to have a favorable opinion of this one which is very "unique".
damn those tiny terrors always sound good
dorje, the song is called in the sunshine
i laughed so hard to this review, thanks. i will be getting a squier jaguar now :)
Love the marshall, come on you irons!
Kurt would not have approved of this video. He was an Arsenal fan.
This is actually hilarious. sweet review
@AndertonsMusic LOL!
BTW, any chance for Johnny Marr's Jaguar demo? I would be interested to hear what you guys think about it.
it's actually a 3 tone guitar hence why it's called a 3 tone guitar and the top 2 knobs are the volume control and if you look at the video you will see that kurts guitar does have those knobs on it and the switch at the top cuts or boosts the signal i have one of those guitars
did you guys know that Kurt actually bought the jaguar like that, he never altered, but too this day no one has stood up yet and claimed they altered it there selves
I wonder why
lilminer69er
maybe there was just some guy who liked classic rock and never really gave nirvana a good listen too it so he is unaware of the guitar. or he was a dying man who was ill and had to sell his jaguar to afford hospital bills then died later and never got to claim that he was the maker
Oliver Brown damn
No he bought the guitar for 20 dollars at a pawn shop.
Over the years he modified it to his needs.
Hence why his mustangs had the same mods as well
Chris E
where did you learn that?
Persumably back in '93.
THAT CAB! AAAAAHHHHHHHH! I WANT!
Kurt's jag had a solid tremolo. It was blocked with no purpose of the trem arm.
God I want one so fucking badly! And just an FYI, Kurt didn't mod it himself, he bought it like that
Gotta love these guys! :)
At 05:11 "you couldn't get a finger....in that hole" (Stick cracks up)
To answer your questions:
The jaguar had little single coils originally, (not like the p90-ish Jazz Master pickups)
The upper controls was supposed to be "jazz" switch. You set your "jazz tones" like lower volume with more tone rolled on the top and can use the top switch to switch immediately to the set volume and tone without having to dial them in when you want to switch. Of course "Jazz Guys" didn't really take to these Fender guitars and chose to keep their hollow bodies.
Really don't care for Kurt's playing but that guitar sounds really really nice
He played an A major instead of an A5, it's not "way" wrong. He's not going for Kurt Cobain identicality here, he's reviewing a damn guitar.
I must agree..very very easy.
how many of you people know that this guitar kurt got used somewhere "as is" then everyone thought it was of his own signature.
Kurt Cobain taped up all the switches with black electrical tape and never used them. He never used a wammie bar. Kurt used pedals for effects. As posted earlier, Kurt did not design this Jaguar. He would also use it as a weapon if he got in a fight.
Cobain was a huge West Ham fan!!!!!
John Barry hahahahahha, class
I know you're kidding, but just in case anyone wants to know, Kurt used Mesa Boogie amps with varying distortion (Boss DS-1) and fuzz pedals.
@Vinaysananda the video is called "fender kurt cobain signature guitar" not "how to sound exactly like kurt cobain rocket science" ;) of course, if anyone wants to know how to sound like him - very helpful comment!
Here's a terrifying fact: Kurt's Jaguar seems to have been previously owned by Martin Jenner, guitarist for Cliff Richard during his "Mistletoe and Wine" period.
Oh no. That's really bad.
charly88888888 i just found this out and i thinks its a great story. The history of a guitar can be a great story.
Johnny Marr likes the Jag trem....but a very different player of course!
Awesome! I'd really love to see a review of the Mustang one now.
I ROTFL when Paul started air drumming like Lee does. XD
in other video actually, he explained that for copyright issues they cant play nirvana songs just style like nirvana.
I have a vintage modified jag, the bridge pick up sounds like pure ass with distortion. I was going to put dimarzio super distortion in the bridge (same bridge pickup in Kurt's jag)
@PunkHardSisters I use D'Addario 10-46 gauge ;-)
Hence, "RARELY". Sheesh...
Kurt used a VOX for the clean sound and a fender for the distortion sound...
You need to stop leaving your phone where the subway bandit can get to it.
00:37 Chappers looks like David Brent, lmao.
