I was early to buy the Quintero model congas in all sizes..but in the case of the bongos I recieved...My comparisons to other bongos and my general assesments were these : The small bongo head...at first tuning made a cracking sound while I was gently tuning with 1/4 turn per lug...and i was amazed the drum skin wire / aluminum glue channel had cracked at the seam where it is joined...and the expoy glue which was not flush to the top and touching the drum rim had lifted upwards to permit flexing of the drum rim and the expoxy showed evidence of cracking as the entire drum head had warped ! Also I saw evidence of tears in the plastic head between the top drum edge and rim which was probably there since manufacturing not related to tuning. This ruined my exerience , I had replacement Remo heads of a differnet type ( Fiberskyn 3 model ) to complete my sound test. All was as I expected ...the bongos sounded like any fiberglass of wood shell bongo...it just sounded like plastic heads. I usually use my own head tone control methods to adjust each head to the characteristic sound more resembling natural heads by muting high frequencies at the aound edge portion of the underside of the head and adding a thick skin type sound by adding an extra layer of either gafers tape or just plastic bumper stickers which I cut into various size circles and apply to the underside head. This emulates a thicker head tone...a truer bongo head tone. Now...regarding the shells...which were gorgeous gel coats and red sparkles..but the shell itself was to thin, resembling other lesser models of fiberglass bongos that I know can more easily warp and cave in at the shells or sound edges as result of the delamination of fiberglass layers. Another issue was the bottom base ring was not well fitted and easily shifted off center and could cause chipping of the gel coat as metal is gouging gel coats. The sound edge was sufficiently reinforced...but not any more improoved over Lp Matador model fiberglass bongos. I already know how fiberglass bongos slide easily in our legs as we see...Roberto is always having to adjust his bongos and put more leg preasure to hold them. I do nt use clumsy pads as is on the market...I have simpler and nearly invisible solutions for the problem...I will not share here. Now...regarding the Quintero model congas...I was dissapointed that the typical sizes were not available ( no quinto / small congas size ) and instead the drum set was extended to an extra large Tumba...which would be nice...if not for the odd matching of high frequency shell type with synthetic hig frequency Remo heads which are the same thickness regardless of drum shell / head sizes. It all seemed amaturish product developement with little thought other than making a pretty drum wearing superb tuning system parts. I spent day adjusting the heads to make tone control solutions so my congas did not sound like Tom Toms and have excessive overing which was a nightmare on stage with feed back and EQ issues to cope with. My conga and tumba now sound acceptable...closely sounding like thicker Remo NuSkynz model heads which I would have prefered for fiberglass rather than thinner heads. The extra large tumba is still being tweaked in my own pro shop. I am now tucking natural heads of my own choice and selective thickness / drum head weight* I feel is more appropriate for the drum sizes and to balance against the ringiness of fiberglass shells. I added home made drum head mutes ( similar in concept to tom tom mutes used on drum sets but with out mechanical devicesof holes drilled. ( my own design...my secrets :)
Can someone tell me where you can buy the Orestes Vilató Gon Bops bongos. The Gon Bops website doesn't sell them. That company has a terrible website. You can't even write to them
BEST bongers ever!
