"Stop wasting money, buy a house!" | Chats with Dalia - Ep. 2

  • I've been getting more comments relaying the opinion that upgrading a rental with rental friendly diys is a waste of money and that I should instead be saving to buy a house. Many of the comments are just straight up rude and clearly some people feel very strongly about this. There are several reasons why someone might be renting instead of buying a house. Some people might just never want to buy, or never be in the right position to buy. There is the financial aspect, which is huge and can be super prohibitive, and there are also other reasons that may come in to play as well. I decided to make this video as a reminder that we shouldn't jump to judgements about why people are doing what they're doing, AND as a reminder that contentment in life is huge. For me, doing little upgrades to a space that may not be my ideal space brings me a lot of joy and really allows me to be contented with where I am. That of course doesn't mean that we don't have dreams and aspirations that we work towards. Love you ❤️

Don’t listen to haters. I did many upgrades to my rentals and I enjoyed my space and it made me so happy. I do have a house now and I don’t regret anything I did. I learned a lot from those projects!! “Bloom where you are planted” 😘

Same here. I’m a homebody and work from home so I need to feel comfortable in the place I spend the vast majority of my time. Small upgrades didn’t set me back financially any more than a nice dinner out but brought more joy to me personally. I also learned new skills I’ll take to any place I live.

I would LOVE to buy a house but despite having a perfect rental payment record for over 5 years at my current space, no credit card debt, on time payments on my car, ect. I can't get approved for a home loan. I'm a single mom who is self employed and renting is my ONLY option. I don't come from a family with money and I don't have a large savings account for a down payment. I am incredibly frugal with my budget. People don't realize that some people really just can't buy a house despite their best efforts.

I wonder 🤔 is it homeowners acting that way about people who don't want to own a home? Or perhaps people who desperately wish they had the means to own a home and become frustrated that people with the means to do so choose not to? (Assuming they truly have the means because sometimes it can just appear that way.)

Why do people not understand that every person on this earth is NOT the same. It just blows my mind!!! I'm 45 yrs young and have never owned a home because I like to move around and experience new areas and I simply haven't fallen in love with one place enough to commit. It seems the older I get, the more unsolicited advice and/or opinions I get. It's so annoying because I'm happy and it's becoming quite obvious to me that people just don't know how to let people be happy.

    • @Makeuploveculture
      @Makeuploveculture Год назад +3

Yes!!!! And it deeply bothers me to a level I can’t even describe when people choose purposely to get inside someone’s head and make them suddenly feel unhappy. What I mean is for example someone being very content in their life and doing things on a routine and it genuinely just fills their soul. Then someone comes along and hates on something they do and just pushes a button that makes that person question their happiness. Like who gave them the right to do that! I’ve seen it happen and I’ve experienced it myself- like just let people be happy with what they’re doing as long as it isn’t hurting someone. People LOVE to tell me that I should drink and get out and go to clubs and do stupid ****, I don’t know why since it does not make me happy to do those things. It only fill their own needs somehow- it’s so selfish. Like they can only hang out with me if I do what they want and go get drunk with them. It’s extremely annoying. Anyway, I’m trying to say I get you! Good for you for doing what you love and being flexible and enjoying your lifestyle.

I 100% relate to everything you just said. My partner and I moved in to our newly bought apartment in the city, close to where we work in 2019 and a couple of months later pandemic hit and everything got shutdown and we both started working from home. I personally developed a really bad working habit where I worked 12 to 14 hrs a day. Part of this was because durig pandemic my workplace had to downsize manpower so the ones who got to stay had to pick up the slack. That situation along with being stuck in a 4-walled concrete home with only tall buildings to look at took a toll on my mental health. I then heard that a lot of my previous colleagues started to move to the countryside where its fresh and a lot more safer from the virus. That of course made me feel sad because I felt so stuck in a place that no longer serves me or what I want my life to be or where I want to be. I had a 160° change in life priorities during pandemic and that was when I realized that work and career is not everything, hence living in the city no longer made sense. I want a better quality of life. But because I have mortgage to pay now and selling is a difficult option given the recession in our country, I'm forced to stay. I'm getting by, but I can't ever say that I'm completely happy. I may sound entitled given that many may not be able to afford a home, but sometimes your priorities change and you realize that mental and physical health is more important. So, to anyone considering to buy a home in the city, think about it as many times as possible and consider every possible angles and see if it will serve you and your family for years to come.

You have the freedom to pick up and move anytime unlike someone who owns (like I do) and don't have the worry about upkeep or if the market crashes. I study housing in Canada, and honestly I hate how much emphasis there is on having to own a home. When I was first considering buying a house/condo, I discovered that it wasn't even cheaper in my city either, and the commute would be worse, so I decided to rent and it was a great way to build savings. Monthly rent was easily less than mortgage interest + heat + condo fees + taxes + closing costs (which are all costs which you can't recoup) so I had no hesitation to treat it like my own home as long as I was there. I still got endless crap from colleagues about it despite the fact that I was loving life and living without debt, so that always drove me crazy.

I rent and will continue to rent probably until I'm old and grey. You can move into an apartment or house, but changes are required to make it into a "home". One that reflects your own unique taste and creates a peaceful calm environment to relax in. Those things are sorely needed in this crazy world we live in. I tend to do renter friendly changes and to be honest, it's actually cheaper to do that. Hiring someone or investing in new furniture, if you're lucky enough to have a disposable income to do that, awsome, but most dont. Seems some people forget that you shouldn't feel entitled to project your own thoughts and desires onto someone else... this is your journey. While you may not own a home currently, that does not mean that you couldn't if you wanted to and context means everything.
Thank you for sharing more of your background with us and for the reminder that you can and should appreciate where you are. The future is where and what you want it to be ... no one else 💕

Love this! We are renting as well and I agree that there are SO MANY REASONS why people rent. It's interesting to me that people think they even have a clue about the details of other people's lives. Why do humans like to think they have the answers for everybody else. :) Thank you for sharing this perspective!!

These people have to remember that buying a home also comes with taxes, homeowners insurance, repair costs, etc- it just does not make sense for some to incur all those extra costs. I feel sorry for the people who always have the need to judge and tell others to do things their way. Maybe that’s how they were raised. I don’t know. But people shouldn’t do that. That’s a very private decision that only evolves you and your hubby. Me and my hubby bought a house then we weren’t happy in that house so we had to move and now we’re stuck with that other house cause it hard to sell. Everyone has to live with the consequences of your own decisions. So it’s not wise to but in when it’s not your place cause you don’t know how it’s going to affect their consequences… in my humble opinion. And btw, what you do in your videos helps us all, no matter if we’re renting or paying mortgage, to customize our homes to look better in an affordable way. So thank you truly for this home made happy series. Hugs

Love that you spoke on this subject. I feel the same as a renter in Los Angeles. Would love to buy, but I know I’ll never comfortably afford it. instead, I can comfortably afford to do small improvements in my apartment, like replace a sink faucet, swap a dishwasher for a undercounted wine cooler, Sun shades, paint the walls, replace cabinet knobs, whatever small improvements. I’m an architect and would love to design and build my own home, but to also practice my (non-tech) profession in an already high cost of living city, with only my single income, I’ve found it depressing to strive for happy home ownership in this city. So yay for choosing to find joy in renting! 🎉

Good reasons to do "renter friendly"
    1. Do it as a trial--ocnvince a partner, or do I really like it.
    2. good solid and I can't justify ripping it up.
    3. I really like the location but I don't like the colour.
    4. I get bored easily and like to experiment --find your style.
    5. Lacking resourses. i have $100 not $10000.
6 Learning to make decisions is difficult if it is only high $ amounts. Experiment with making decisions at small $ amounts and the stakes aren't high. Its fun. High $ can be terrifying.

Those type of comments are so preposterous! My husband and I had a dream to buy our own home one day and so we lived with my mother in law for a couple of years until we were finally able to find a home in CA this year which was a miracle within itself!
We almost bought one home but I blocked it going forward like you did because I didn’t think we could afford it long term. We finally found our small home and put in an offer on our home after being passed on for another home.
We as people need to do what is best for us in the moment and long term. Everyone has a different path. My best friend has always lived in apartments and she is willing to continue living in such a way because that’s what she knows. I grew up in a 2 bedroom house and knew I wanted more space than that so I pushed us to look for a home with at least 3 bedrooms. It’s just what was necessary and what worked for us

As much as I love the idea of one day owning a home or apartment that I can say “this is mine” about. I live a very nomadic life and have a transient personality. I don’t want to be tied down. I enjoy fresh starts and learning new ways to live in new towns and surroundings. My work, circumstances and relationship allow me to do so. I’m young and not tied down with children yet. (I can settle down in the future if children enter my life, to provide stability for them). Investing in somewhere permanent now would be irresponsible when I won’t be living here for more than a few years. But just because I don’t plan to settle in my rental for long or plan to invest in property atm, doesn’t mean I should put up living somewhere that doesn’t feel homely or have my stamp on it.

Sometimes people just talk because they have mouths 🙄, don’t listen to them, maybe their houses are their own but they are ugly 😂. No, really, so glad you share this cause it is REAL, there are people that NEVER will have a property and that doesn’t have to mean that they have to live in an ugly/ old fashion that doesn’t reflect who they are and specially, a place where they feel so happy to go back after a difficult day.

  • @lisacamilleri211

As Kara said, don't listen to those people.
It's no one's business but yours if you rent. Asking if you'd thought about buying a house rather than continuing to do the projects you've been doing would have been kinder. Maybe they're people who don't see why you would do anything to a space that's only temporary. It's not easy to just go out and buy a house. Lots of people don't want to take on the maintenance costs and choose to never buy. Unlike an apartment, if the roof leaks it's your responsibility to fix it. I've done a lot of little things to my apartment to make it more me and I'm very happy that I did. The things you've done are fabulous. It's a tie between your stone backsplash and your balcony as to which are my faves. Hopefully your dream of finding land to build on will happen. In the meantime I can't wait to see your next projects.
