As someone who supports a popular vote idea and lives on a continent where that's dominant (well, it is dominant in most of the world actually), I can say that I am not really sure about USA. And all geographically big states for that matter, depending on their system of governance. In USA, democracy is peculiar, your president has more power than most presidents in the world. In the rest of the world, presidents are mostly for show, while the true power lies with the Prime Minister/Chancellor. They are the ones running the Ministries (or, in USA, Departments), they are closely connected with houses of representatives (Assemblies, Congresses...) and it all works. In USA, president is way too powerful for the modern day and age democratic system. And it is a huge country with regions having very different needs. So, it makes sense actually to keep the EC. If you had a normal democratic system like the rest of the world where the president is more of a figurehead, then sure, go with a popular vote. But since that is not the case, popular vote can really hurt your "flyover states" as they would really have no way of being represented by the highest official in the country. They would still get 2 congressmen and be represented equally in one of the two houses of representatives, but that's it. President would always be elected by the will of coastal states where majority of people live. And while it might seem fair, one person one vote, it does not really reflect the needs of the country... and those should always come first instead of dogmatically stick to ANY idea. Because that's how you get Chinese government or similar - very dogmatic, does not take the realities of geography and everything else into consideration. Does not mean autocratic by default, it's just that it sticks to an IDEA instead of REALITY way more. Rework the Electoral College maybe? Find some other system? Actually limit the powers of the POTUS before moving to popular vote? Just getting rid of Electoral Collage and moving to a Popular Vote system for choosing a president doesn't solve anything and in the case of USA it would create more problems actually. In short, if the individual you elect has constitutionally huge power, as POTUS does, then a popular vote in a country as huge and diverse as USA does not really work and does not hit all sides equally. Smaller countries? Sure! Countries where the president does not have as much power? Sure! But USA is neither of those. It's a much broader problem and to fix it, you need to change much in a way that US politics operates. It is not as simple as "Let us change how we count the votes and keep everything the same". And I am all for popular vote! But every country in the world has its own set of needs and realities that need to be addressed in a non-dogmatic way and create a system best suited for its set of realities. You can't have one system work the same in every single country and culture, that's just idiotic.
Okay, we will do away with the electorate college when we do away with the two party system. No more red. No more blue. That way "blue cities" do not get to dictate all 50 countries that make up America. Yes, I typed countries. States are countries. It is called a synonym. Look it up, unlearned Liberals.
