@clayhayeshunter Clay, I've been watching you build bowes for some time now and it's really inspired me to get into traditional archery. I've never shot a bow before, but decided to take it upon myself to build the first bow I shoot. I cut a shagbark hickory tree roughly 8" about a month ago. Roughed it out, and force dried it over a fire. A few days ago, I rasped it down to roughly 1/2" limbs and a 2" handle. I'm at the point now where I need to build a tillering tree and make a bow string. Im also curretly making river cane arrows. Im teaching myself to flint knap currently as well, for the arrowheads. I'm from Alabama so hickory are everywhere. I already want to start another. Thanks for all your guidance and inspiration!
@@LosInTheFlesh Thanks!! Ryan Gill is excellent as well! He is exceptional at his tutorials, i was stoked to see an older video of the two doing a hunt together.
@alabamaarcher6862 Please do tell ok where to find some! I can only think of one tree and it's in someone's yard. Also, I'm located in central Alabama around Bham area but from northwest. Would definitely be interested in getting together with like-minded folks.
I wish I could give you 100 likes. That was amazing to watch. You’re the MacGyver of outdoor skills. You do things the ‘hard way’ and thus receive a much higher level of satisfaction whether your endeavor (hunting) is successful or not they still are highly enjoyable to watch. Keep up the good work and don’t change anything.
Very nice, thanks for the class in bow making! If I was younger and or healthy I would be attempting this. Bowhunting was my passion before becoming disabled, the only weapon I used other than bird hunting with a shotgun, Turkey I also used a bow! "KEEP ON KEEPIN ON"
I'm planning a trip to Texas from SoCal with my uncle to harvest some osage staves from a family friend's property your harvesting video is gonna be so useful thanks for all the information you share
Super cool using birch tar to seal that up. I’m working on a birch bow now, my first one, of course I made it to lite so now I’m going for a Penobscot bow like the one I saw in your channel.
Thank you for the video Clay. This ended bookmarked among the other bow making video tutorials. I have a piece of wood in my apartment I harvested couple of months ago. that will hopefully end up as a Hadzabe type bow this summer. I can not harvest a log and split it where I live without paying a fine so I picked up a thick long branch from a tree that was pulled out by a digger on a construction site. This video will help cause I am working on my balcony and do not have many tools. Hopefully I do not just end up with kindling. :D
Another joy to watch inspirational video!!! Thanks for sharing your skills and passion for the outdoors and the bow! I've screwed up a couple of attempts but just sourced a hickory trunk I think will make a couple of good staves! I'll be giving it ago after my Bushcraft shelter is complete 👊
Thanks for the video, Clay! Could you do a video talking about hand positioning when shooting a self-bow? I just notice that your position is different than what I was taught growing up.
I just discovered your channel and man, you've blown my mind! I did not know some of the things you do were even possbile. I am curious about two things: How much time did it take you to create this bow from dried stave to usable bow? And what tools other than a big knife would you recommend for bow making? Keep up th good work!
Awesome stuff , really nice bow ❤ , I just have a question: I have a hickory backed bow with rawhide, can I seal it with oil based varnish? I'm afraid the rawhide might get affected by it. Thanks for your time ❤
I’ve got a question: I’ve never shot an arrow off the hand before; always had an arrow shelf. Does the feel of the arrow passing over your hand affect your shot at all?
Clay, in what state did you find yew? I snuck a pole from a trip to Oregon on a visit to a brother. Thought you were between Idaho and Florida. I've heard said that Osage is the poor man's yew, but from my limited experience, Osage is much superior to yew. What would have been a 40 plus bow by the limb thicknes in Osage or even locust, was becoming more like 25lbs in my first yew bow. Am I way off here. I would appreciate any commemts from actual experience. Thanks.
How many times have you been shaping/bending a bow, and it broke? When I was these vids I always feel like they’re on the edge of exploding during the bending process.
I was always wondering if actual shaping of the bow is really that good? Wouldn't removal of material work against the generation of force? Obviously pulling on the string would be easier, but you still want to shoot something reasonably fast, so you could actually hunt something.
🤔I bet you can't pass thru a forest with out looking at all the trees that could be good bows😉🎯 Thanks for all your builds, great entertainment!
Bro that’s me
I literally always do that it's stronger than me
Just as I walk through a wooded area and look for a great place to build a warming and cooking fire, with just a ferro rod in my pocket. Skillet
NOT All trees are good Bow material....!!!!

Clay Hayes and Ryan Gill inspired me to embark on the same journey a few years ago. I wish you the best and hope you enjoy the rewards.
Plenty of Osage out here in bama just gotta know where to find it!

While I’m sitting at work on Saturday this is exactly what i needed. Thanks 🤙🏾
Your coffee break is over, now get your tail back to work. Earn an honest living!
You are definitely best bow maker i know! Thanks for sharing experience!
Clay Hayes is the GOAT! Love this
I’m currently in the Mount Hood forests. I just started a bowl building. I’m about halfway through. Thank you for the great content
I could feel the warmth of that fire, fascinating craftsmanship -thanks
One of first things I can recall my dad teaching me.
Great video, and an amazing bow! Thank you sir, God bless!
John 14:6
That is a beautifully crafted bow. Your skill still amazes me.
Love to see you working with yew!

"KEEP ON KEEPIN ON"
Excellent video tutorial.
I love your hunting videos, but these bow making videos is what brought me to your channel. Love it brother great video!
Nice work, Clay!
Nice bow!
Sounds good.
I'm planning a trip to Texas from SoCal with my uncle to harvest some osage staves from a family friend's property your harvesting video is gonna be so useful thanks for all the information you share
Another great video! The rawhide I ordered arrived quickly, thanks!
Awesome!
Great Job!! Great thecnique! Thanks for the viedo!
Not that I don't like your other videos, but I love when you post bow building vids.
Meant to say Vertically.....4:00 in the a.m. Dog tired....But I truly love watchin Clay make Bows....!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very nice job Clay
Awesome! Beautiful bow. I missed the bow content, and I am glad you are back at it. Thanks for sharing
Now I want to buy one of those knife. And yes that sound is just the best.
Very enjoyable video filled with heaps of great information!
Wow. Beautiful bow!
Yew makes some of the most beautiful bows I have ever seen. I’ll do one from yew one day, but getting it to Missouri is the hard part.
But will yew tho 🙄😂
@ nice lol

Great video!!! I got some birch tar i made a few years ago. After watching this Im going to try and seal/stain my next bow with it.
Beautiful work.
Pretty Awesome!!!
Incredible

Another darn good video. Thanks from Pennsylvania.
Just got a copy of the traditional bowyers handbook yesterday. Can't wait to get started.
#tradbowsforever
He did it again!
Masterclass such a hardwork 👌♥️
A half hour of beautiful craftsmanship, *chip chip chip* and *sniff gnahhhh*
Nice bow!

Didn’t realize they had yew In Idaho. Nice
With shorter bear man, you look like you are 30! Great job staying in such a great shape and building such a bow!
Хорошая работа!
Great job!
Excellent Clay!
I've been waiting for your bow build videos. Please guide us how to start making bow.
Amazing
another great video
Awesome build along as usual. Im sure that bow will put meat on the table!
Nice great hob😂😂❤
I like Using the Blade Horizontally with Scraping Effect....!!!!
Hope you will take us along a deer hunt with this bow!
Good job on that string. I have a hard time with weak spots at the splices.
Спасибо Учитель!
Very cool, gotta look up if I can make something like it here in Germany
Day 3: gets a manicure. Has to pay double. 😂 Seriously, great video. Birch tar part was awesome!
Nice build Clay. Have you ever made a penobscot bow before?
Thanks for the video, Clay!
Could you do a video talking about hand positioning when shooting a self-bow? I just notice that your position is different than what I was taught growing up.
Hey Clay,
Build a bow with an obsidian knife.
I'd watch that.
I just discovered your channel and man, you've blown my mind! I did not know some of the things you do were even possbile.
I am curious about two things:

That was a great video. When you were cracking the bark on the back of the stave I was thinking oh s*** he just broke it😢
How many times, if any, do you need to sharpen that bowie knife throughout the process? Awesome video!
I wish we had way more videos like this. What wood would be comparable to pacific yew on the east coast?
Clay, I'm a knife geek. Which one were you using to build this bow?
Very beautiful bow you built there. If you don't mind me asking what brand name Bowie knife is that and where can I purchase one
Hey Clay, how do you cure your staves
How many TRACKERSCHOOL students are watching?? Thank you Clay, as always.
Do I dry the yew for 3 years as a log or as the split out stave? I've got a couple of 6" to 8 " logs cut 3 years ago.
I’ve got a question: I’ve never shot an arrow off the hand before; always had an arrow shelf. Does the feel of the arrow passing over your hand affect your shot at all?
Nice, hoping to see some accuracy and chronograph videos later on.
what wood did you use for bow? oak, maple birch pine
Hey clay, Can I use a pole peeler instead of a knife?
You could make a fortune selling custom signature model bows brother.
Two days to make. He’d have to charge an insane amount.
That Yew looked like Eastern cedar juniper like the one i,am working on now. Do you need to Sinew the back.
Thanks for the video. Why does Pacific Yew need to be dried for so long instead of trying to fire harden after cutting it down and shaping it?
Is yew related to juniper? The bark looks similar. The wood is close too.
I must have done this about 100 times, almost every time my bow breaks
I saw you are using an MKC bowie. Seems pretty tough.
Someone probably already asked but did you ever check what poundage you got and fps? Just curious.
❤💪👍👌
What type of wood would you recommend for a bow on the east coast? If you’re familiar with any trees native to NC?
Hickory and black locust are good
You can find Osage or "hedge apple" trees as they are known around here all over the eastern United States
What kind of wood is that

How come any yew I find hasn’t the definitive line between the hart wood and the sap wood?
Prediction . . . bowie knife sales will skyrocket. 🤣
Nice bow clay. Too bad that stuff don’t grow in Mississippi.
I think that might be easier with a scandi ground blade. More like a plane blade
I was always wondering if actual shaping of the bow is really that good?
Wouldn't removal of material work against the generation of force?
Obviously pulling on the string would be easier, but you still want to shoot something reasonably fast, so you could actually hunt something.
Dang Clay, you are shootin' quicker. Or I should say less time at anchor? Tom Clum would have a stroke😂 Not near complicated enough to suit him.
3 fingers under the arrow? what draw is that? I was taught classic mediterranean draw with 1 above/2 below.
Cover up and put barrier cream on if your working with yew, its nasty stuff, especially the dust.
what knife is that
I didn't see it on the website but judging from the price of all the other knives its $300 bucks I know that much.
MKC
At last 🏹
Mouth breathing and scraping ASMR
When’s the hunting video with Xander gonna drop
It’ll be on his channel. Not sure when he’ll release it.
THAT THING SPLIT LIKE IT WANTED TO BE MADE INTO BOWS .
Yeah. I'm not sure about using time to create a death tool. There's plenty of those already
