The homeworld series, I love the mothership class. A mobile shipyard capable of gathering resources, creating new ships, and commanding them all. It is truly an amazing and powerful ship class, one that creates an entire fleet from scratch

I played HW 1 back in 1999, and every related game after it. I loved everything about it. The discount format cutscenes that embraced the medium's limitations by using black and white slides and minimally animated scenes to feel like a history documentary. The iconic scene with Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings that left a mark on every single HW player. The only thing I wasn't totally sure about was picking Yes to do the credit song (and a whole album), even though I love Yes on their own merit.
HW 2 was close enough in time that it played basically like HW 1, the sequel. More of the same with a few differences (small craft squadrons instead of single fighters, etc.).
I want to see HW 3 as the dev team envision it after 25 years. Not a retread of HW 1 and 2, just b/c that's what I'm familiar with.
In the 25 years since HW 1, I like to think I've grown and changed.
I'm sure the core HW team at BI have changed in tastes and grown in skills and knowledge. Several of them are from the actual original dev team.
The game industry certainly has, in every aspect of technology, best practices, etc.
I'd hope that HW's audience has also grown, but gauging from the comment sections it looks like that's not always the case.
It's the same curse that affects successful musicians too. You write one successful Hotel California, and then you're doomed to perform it for all eternity in sports arenas and on cruise liners. HW was great, but maybe it would have been better to crank out a cash grab HW 3 that copy-pasted HW 1's style, updated some minor things to make the game feel and play like a 2024 RTS, and push it out the door. Call it Homeworld 3: the Second Sequel (sadly ignoring Cataclysm).
Meanwhile, this version of HW could be alternately released with a separate title like Homeworld: Generations, or something similar to differentiate it from the HW 1/2/3 core lineage. B/c soooomeone will always complain that this HW isn't the HW they were weaned on.
But we're here now, and here are some words from an author more famous and credible than me: You can't ever go back, but you can move forward.

The new mothership looks tiny compared to the old ones, also it shouldn't be the Khar Sahjuuk, it should be the Pride of Higara that got lost since the Khar Sahjuuk got replaced in the second game

Khar Sajuuk is a new ship they built after the events of Homeworld 2. The one from Homeworld 2 was just called Sajuuk.

The opening feels so hurried and overpacked. It's flooded with meaningless dialogue and rapid scene shifts. Direction failed big time. Juxtaposed with HW1's slow and impactful intro ("Hiigara, our home"), this one comes as rushed, in the least. I get the notion they knew what they wanted done as far as gameplay goes, but were void of inspiration regarding the story. The further we go, the worse it gets. The main antagonist is downright pathetic. Even if they had no other option than pitting us against fanatics for a third time, it could've been handled differently.
Not only that, excluding the tutorial it's only 12 missions or so. What gives? At this price? And some missions -- like the intro -- seem to have been added for their own sake. The roid shower and "ice shelf" missions in particular. The visual effects of asteroid breaking look terrible, and the idea of hiding a ship under some fog? What sensors are they using in this universe...? Still, the biggest complaint about that mission would be a spoiler. There's around 6 maps for skirmish, yes? Horrendous.
If we take out the "filler" missions, the whole story is like some sideshow DLC, rather than a main game. Focusing on individual characters in the cutscenes was a mistake. They should've stayed true to the old style, and raise the stakes with them. We have an enemy weaponizing hyperspace, and destroying entire worlds... and not once are we sent to an affected system as a relief party or escort fleet for evacuees from an upcoming target world. The Synthetic Cores would've been vital to leading survivor vessels safely away with Long Jumps.
The player simply experiences no pressure from the enemy before going into counteroffensive. What we see in the intro is too arbitrary to induce enough emotion. Instead of copy-pasting the asteroid mission idea from HW1, and again defending the Mothership from inbound rocks, we could've been tasked with intercepting planetary debris coming at a civilian station in the attacked world's moon orbit; being constantly updated with personnel losses over successive impacts. Isn't the Khar-Kushan the only ship in the galaxy capable of responding to such crises fast enough?
So many missed opportunities. So little content, because of production going into the dust covered megaliths. There was no reason not to include a few more missions without them.

In honnesty I'll tell you why I won't buy it. 7 minutes in, I know what's going wrong with the characters... they exist. In the 3 other games (and yeah, I count cataclysm in), you have :
The commanding officer/ the s'jet that talks for the ship, makes situational reports and (in the case of cataclysm) act as a vector for the story
Command : just give comments on the objective and situational reports, often scts as the external link of the ship and acts as the voice of the group
The spaceships each got 1 voice that helps you understand their situation just by selecting them. And why they work is simple, They give depth to the narration. Each "character" had a role and give a depth to how you perceive the situation with the individual ships, the mothership that acts as a "town" and command that act as the "nation". Each have their own level of information and defines the situation using it. It still haunts me, some nights, the screams of a pilot from a ship I just lost, only to hear my navigator go "unit lost" and my "command" to tell me to book it (playing "homeworld : cataclysm"). That worked. Here you get 1 mothership and at least 3 persons on the same level.
Additionally the story feels discontinued from 1 and 2, where something big should have happened when the third core (ancient) had been reunited with the other 2. But then again, I'm only at 7 minutes. Yet I still get red flags. And your comment made me worry. If they pumped missions from the 2 first, at least they could have made them interesting, like avoiding asteroids while being harassed by the enemy.

      Exactly
Nobody cares about marry sues or garry stues doing their fuckin' adventure. Homeworld is not a "coming of age" story or some heroic bullshit. It always was about a desparate bid for survival in the face of overwhelming odds, the wast coldness of space reflected in the military command's distant coldness that sometimes cracks with grief and spite. ("Subject did not survive interrogation"). You don't have characters in homeworld because the already cold and calculating Kushan have mostly given up their individuality for the sake of survival. Kushan's only break their Laconic tone occasionally, and that occasion is usually when they die in agony as their broken vessel depressurises in the brutal fight.
Furthermore not seing the effects of the enemy superweapon wich IS the main story point is just plain fuckin' stupid. THE VERY FIRST thing everyone remembers from HW1 IS "KHARAK IS BURNING", and that's backed up by adiago of strings and the most makabre of background skyboxes you've seen in a sci-fi game thus far.
Dialog should have been kept minimal, but impactfull. this whole game was made by people who never played HW1...

agree with all. Husband and I used to not even think they were human in the original games. humanoid sure.
This is quite disappointing, even if the visual graphics of the ships are quite beautiful... every time a human shows up it seems like a bad halo fan edit or something.

@@thomasravard7127 I'll buy it, but completely agree. A big part of the charm was not even knowing what the Hiigarans even looked like for me. Now that they're just human, it loses a lot of the mystique.

Venting your spleen on a random Internet video comment section won't grant you any greater agency over what HW 3 currently is.
The Internet exists. I'm sure you can find plenty of other players who feel the same way and also want to return to HW 1 and 2, in the Homeworld Discord or the subreddit. And you can play some 1950s TV shows while you're at it, to escape the crushing reality of the world you must live in. The rest of the non-you world profoundly apologizes for inconveniencing you with their existence.
