Recently, I read an article by Michael Nielsen titled "How to Make Memory Systems Widespread?" which explains that the key to popularizing memory systems, such as spaced repetition, lies in developing a strong "memory culture." The author emphasizes that while tools like Anki and SuperMemo have great potential, they are not widely used due to certain barriers. To overcome these, he suggests fostering a culture of shared practices, improving skills, and better disseminating knowledge, making these systems accessible and effective for billions of people.

Hi, thank you for the recommendation. For anyone reading this, here is the link to the article michaelnotebook.com/mmsw/

The keyword is "the curse of knowledge" indeed. Secondly, self-directed learning is all about self-directing. The job of creators is to document the ideas the best they can. Then the second layer of meme processing kicks in. That's why Pleasurable Learning is precious!

Firstly, is hard to agree that Woz has failed to teach incremental reading since you are proficient at it. In my understanding incremental reading is an application of cumulative learning.

The point is that from the people who ever try SM very few people do understand IR. Btw, did you want to elaborate further? I was waiting for a "secondly" 😆

Incremental reading was easy to understand. The after using using it for a year, it was less easy to understand how it got corrupt. A couple of these experiences was enough. Also it wouldn't work on mobile devices. Anki incremental reading was never as good, but I could work on it in lunch hours and on the bus, etc.

Do you mean your collection got corrupted? frequent backup solution is a must in SM

@@PleasurableLearning Completely agree about backups, but it doesn't inspire confidence. The backups were manual and therefore not always done.🤔 My preferred tool is Anki, yet I acknowledge that Supermemo had some great functionality. It will pass to another generation that could take the software side seriously. Piotr's focus was academic research rather than software focussed. Nobody can do everything.

You mention that the process of learning SM and IR was pleasurable for you, and that this was a key factor in it also being easy to learn. Given the importance of pleasure of learning, if someone is learning IR but finds that it reduces their pleasure compared to other learning approaches, what would you suggest?

    • @PleasurableLearning

I would suggest more incrementalism, so invest less time per day using SM. Aditionally add learning materal about what you care instead on focusing to learn to use the app and IR. An initial simple and rudimentary use is better than a more sophisticated use creating lots of friction.

I would start with simple questions and answers (e.g. learning a language) and combine it with lots of Pleasurable Learning. It seems to be motivational :)

The concept behind Supermemo are excellent. However the software was buggy and not easy to understand. It would only run on Windows. Then they tried to make a profit from it. Buggy, confusing and chargeable, do not work well together.
Anki uses poorer algorithms based on an old version of Supermemo. But it is free, has no bugs and is easy to understand. The balance tipped towards Anki. If Supermemo found a way to hire an experienced programmer to re-write and a UX designer, it could become saleable. I would jump back to it if that development effort was going to happen.
Supermemo is an excellent idea that has been badly implemented.

It takes a while to realize just how amazing incremental reading truly is. n00bs just think it is mega weird.

Do you think I could use supermemo to study? I’m studying medicine on Spain and I need to read and learn 700 or so pages each 3 months

    • @PleasurableLearning

Supermemo is designed for free learning (self-directed) and not for school system (fixed curriculum, deadlines, exams, short-term etc). Albeit possible to use SM for such purpose, you will need to constantly fight the algorithm. IR will make you fail deadlines, or investing too much time for flashcards that have a short lifespan.I very strongly suggest to use Anki for that.
Here is a video I did close to that flow ruclips.net/video/Ky55GC6Qt-8/видео.html Curiosamente en español, ya que es la UOC. Saludos desde España 😆

if you have to read it all, you can still put it to SuperMemo and benefit in the future from this "crazy effort". It is important however, that you do not start 700 before you are fluent with SuperMemo. Otherwise you will double your work and frustration. At worst, move the "crazy stuff" to next year. Read the old way now, learn the program, and go "crazy" when you are ready
