    The Ctrl+Shift+F6 shortcut has been very helpful for me, as it allows direct access to the HTML code. However, to use it, I need to be outside of edit mode or press Esc first. I also use inline CSS to design my SuperMemo collection. In reading mode (when viewing an article or a fragment of an article), pressing Ctrl+Shift+F6 directly shows the HTML code of the current window. In windows with both a question (front card) and an answer (back card), Ctrl+Shift+F6 applies to the last clicked window. For example, if I'm editing the question and press Esc, followed by Ctrl+Shift+F6, the HTML edit window (Notepad) will show the code for the question. Similarly, if the answer was the last active window, pressing Esc and then Ctrl+Shift+F6 will open the HTML code for the answer. Understanding how HTML and CSS work, at least using inline CSS via the style attribute, is essential for making your SuperMemo collection more visually appealing. 😀

    This is a fantastic document! It seems to contradict what we know of sleep science. In theory, you should get very tired of working intellectually, and this would kill the fun of learning eventually and provoke switching activities or going to sleep. Perhaps your pleasure of learning reached little known levels? Could you have induced sort of manic state? But then nodding off should be less likely. A pleasurable combat between sleep and wakefulness is most likely to occur at the time of waking. Remnants of sleep inertia may drag you back, while the pleasurably alert mind may keep waking you up. In theory, this could happen many times in the span of 20-40 min in combination with hypnopompic hallucinations. However, in the presented case, there should already be high homeostatic fatigue that favors deep sleep. Needless to say, learning before sleep is not too effective. But if it is driven by true fun and excitement then it is hard to argue against!

    Make the videos in the course as short as possible and to the point. Make them of atomic concepts. It would be easier to search youtube for specific concept or topic and will be more helpful.

      Hi, It is designed like that. I actually mention the very same point. That is why there are about 160 videos. The first two sections have longer videos but once they start screencasting Supermemo the average duration is 4-5 minutes. Some exceptions apply but are "soft" (like philosophy behind supermemo, knowledge formulation etc)

      You can see quite a lot of video titles in this part of the video ruclips.net/video/nfyAU2E1NUw/видео.html and are quite atomic. I recorded 60 videos to date, and sometimes I further split a video into two that I had planned. The editing will be lagging behind like my outstanding queue :)

    I remember reading this article in 2012 and feeling limitless potential flowing through my brain. I had only used Spaced Repetition (Anki) at that time to learn Chinese and a few other things, but I hadn't used proper Incremental Reading before and still had tons of bad habits. By fate, I remembered and reread this article about 2 weeks ago. It still inspires me to this day, and using SRS through this time has enabled me to live a full and productive life. Maybe not the life I imagined I would lead once I "trained myself to become a genius". But it has worked for me, and I will continue to use Incremental Reading / Learning until I die or no longer can operate a computer.

    • @PleasurableLearning
      @PleasurableLearning 11 дней назад

      Exactly. The very abstract layer of Incremental Reading, when you "get it" is an internal process. That doesn't contradict that some skills required or used in Incremental Reading can be learned or adquired. Precisely that is what I do - or try to do - for most of my tutoring. I got two people what went beyound 60 hours of tutoring. I help them a lot, but they still needed the internal process of sense making and putting everything together in their minds. At the end of the day, the mindset, the paradigm shift is the eventual result when they make the "click" and what is required to fully understand Incremental Reading. Some other tutorees did the "click" with less than 10 hours with me. As contrast, some other people just got one session for consultancy to get their own needs covered and they don't fully understand IR.

  • @jakub.kubicek

    0:45 what’s the point of secondary storage? Is your secondary storage folder not inside your git repo? How do you backup your secondary storage?

    • @PleasurableLearning
      @PleasurableLearning 12 дней назад

      Secondary storage is a feature that was meant to overcome hard disk space shortage many years ago. I have used secondary storage for local videos are these files are large. A backup is done by rutinely backing up the folder I used as the secondary folder. I no longer use the secondary storage as I don't use videos and my files fit below the 1 GB file size limitation for gitlab.

    • @PleasurableLearning
      @PleasurableLearning 12 дней назад

      Exactly, the bottleneck is imposed by the element count. So the max number of concepts you can have is the same of elements having no other element types. These limits are very far from being reachable by humans

    The main issue with SuperMemo is that only a few, like you, are willing to share it with the world. Some interesting tools to better use SuperMemo exists in the Chinese community, but they’re inaccessible to most, including me due to language barrier and inability to use and join the China only logins. While SuperMemo may look outdated, its core functionality, knowledge management, and complexity are unmatched. There will never be another Supermemo unless Wozniak himself decides to write one. It's a testament to Wozniak's deep expertise in spaced repetition and incremental reading. SuperMemo still persists because it's unique, but it's also self-centered around Wozniak himself. He seems determined to let it die with him, as it is nearly impossible to preserve or rewrite without his guidance even if the whole codebase gets available.

    • @PleasurableLearning
      @PleasurableLearning 18 дней назад

      Regarding the tools used by Chinese community. That is indeed true. Some users have develop a quite sophisticated flow with an app similar to AutoHotKey and it is not used outside of the chinese community due the language barrier. Additionally, the insights surronding their tools and flows are also segregated.

    Once again, thanks for reacting to my video. I think your take was good and fine level of corrections based on your perspective. The intentional swap of 20 and 21 is a joke and reference to 42 / 2. For the curious watcher, I did prototype a user interface implementing affinity diagrams but my conclusion was that implementing Incremental reading on top of different tools would never work well and at best be a gimmick. So unfortunately development on Ichiban stopped.

      I plan to cover than on video eventually. In short: A) violate fundamental principle of atomicity: an add-on to create tables easily and make 30-40 clozes in a single table (used primarily for university) B) ability to quickly create (or semiautomate) flashcards with close to null applicability, so I memorized thousands of facts/vocab that I never used outside of Anki. C) modify the scheduler that ended up to even higher repetition count than the default settings at marginal retention gain

    In your 'contents' tab, why do you have a mix of both concepts and topics as children?

      concepts can be nested. Some concepts are "finished" in the sense that I will never use it again and will only contain what is already inside the concept group, so I delete the concept, therefore the concept element becomes a folder. I do this because I follow the minimum concept principle. This flow is not required by any means.

    Whoa!! Apparently youtube silently deletes comments which contain links behind my back. So you'll have to google the title to read the article. 11:04-11:32 Great metaphor!! I'm in the incremental process of learning how to cook since I moved to Barcelona in May. Cooking metaphor truly resonated, deserves its own short for sure Just for context - Andy Matuschak's "How to write good prompts: using spaced repetition to create understanding" has been of invaluable help in this as well as other unrelated but structurally similar endeavors. I had it in my collection since 2020-2021 but (hindsight: unfortunately) only now started engaging with it.

      I have set the least strict option for comment moderation in my channel. I think links to external sites are always problematic due to spam prevention. I think ommiting the http or www part could be enough so the user could copy and add the missing characters. Inconvenient I know

    Do you think incremental reading will become as widespread as spaced repetition?

    • @PleasurableLearning

      I hope so! Being rational, SRS will always be more popular than IR. SRS has a clear, simple purpose-memorization-which makes it easy to understand and adopt. IR is a superset of SRS, more complex and demands a different kind of commitment, which might limit its appeal to a more niche audience. That said, as more people become aware of the benefits of IR, especially for learning in-depth and managing information overload, we could see its popularity grow, but not with Supermemo as the tool that implements it.

    Hi there, I'm your fan from China. I've learned a lot from you, both through Bilibili and various RUclips channels, including how to use SuperMemo. I used to focus more on which algorithm between SuperMemo and Anki was better and which one helped me retain information longer. I often wondered whether I should switch to Anki (especially after they introduced the FSFR algorithm). But after watching your "Anki vs. SuperMemo" video, where you compared SuperMemo to a Tesla and Anki to just a wardrobe, I gained a deeper understanding of SuperMemo. SuperMemo can serve as an all-in-one station for storing, processing, and memorizing information. Although I find the reading experience on SuperMemo quite poor, I don't read books directly on it. Instead, I import excerpts from every book I read into SuperMemo for processing, re-reading, and deciding which parts to turn into items for memory. After processing information this way, I've noticed a significant improvement in retention. I used to worry about forgetting what I read or not being able to use it (I read over 100 books a year), but now I'm happy that I can control the knowledge I input into my brain. I can decide what to remember and what to discard, and I can reshape my mind in the way I want. Moreover, during daily processing, related themes from different books often naturally connect, which not only boosts my creativity but also strengthens my knowledge retention. Thank you so much for taking the time to make videos about incremental reading every day. I hope more people can discover this amazing tool

      I have to admit, SuperMemo is indeed very niche. Anki used to be as well, but it has gradually gained popularity. Due to SuperMemo's somewhat complex operation (though it's not too difficult if you spend some time learning it), outdated interface, and Windows-only support, it's hard for it to adapt to the mobile era and be widely accepted. However, there are still some learning enthusiasts who discover this tool. For me, SuperMemo has become an indispensable part of my knowledge management, and I hope more people will uncover this hidden gem.

      I always joke that the hardest sell is SM. Across my life I sold some courses, tickets, peronal training sessions for a company and I think selling IR or SM would be the hardest sell. Imagine convinging a stranger who never hear dof SRS or SM and spend $70 after seeing some 90's UI 😆

      @PleasurableLearning I always, always think about the stark contrast with ChatGPT's hype. ChatGPT had the same WOW factor for me as Supermemo IRing, although ultimately not as profound as IR. SM is my secret weapon and I can't get anyone to try it, ChatGPT everyone in the world is excited to use it. If ChatGPT had the same popularity as SuperMemo, it would be another "secret" weapon.

    Recently, I read an article by Michael Nielsen titled "How to Make Memory Systems Widespread?" which explains that the key to popularizing memory systems, such as spaced repetition, lies in developing a strong "memory culture." The author emphasizes that while tools like Anki and SuperMemo have great potential, they are not widely used due to certain barriers. To overcome these, he suggests fostering a culture of shared practices, improving skills, and better disseminating knowledge, making these systems accessible and effective for billions of people.
