    My favorite strong female character is Ripley from Aliens. She is not a soldier, her personality is not the badass, she has no training in fighting or aliens. But when push comes to shove, she becomes the badass and uses what skills she has to overcome what others cannot.

      I dont have an issue with the Chosen one. just aslong as they don't do two particular taboo's. One being, "OP", "God powered", "Superman". Because then the story is pretty cliche and linear. Two being, A STUPID REASON to why he's the chosen one lol.

      @@ALTZIMATE I think it's interesting when there is a lot of detail and reasons why the person was chosen that are extremely in depth to the story and is a deeper part of it than a lot of "Chosen One" stories actually are. As long as it's all sensible and storybuilding, then you can actually create a great book.
      It's kind of like Harry Potter but he wasn't necessarily chosen but he was like "The Boy Who Lived" and there's a long ass story behind that (I don't read Harry Potter so sorry if I'm wrong)
      I don't really recommend writing this if you are a beginner (like me) and is still learning about book construct and structure and solid plot and stuff like that.

      @@xtonibx5770 My point exactly, so I agree 100%. I don't think any of the tropes she said were bad, I just think some other people have used them poorly in the past. Normally the "CHOSEN ONE" is destined to do something, so no matter what happens you know that something will get done no matter what. So because of that, your never really worried for the character. And yes, unless your making some comic book where everything is meant to be cheesy, their should be a reason why he's chosen. Not just, right place right time, or your great great great grand daddy did something and now for some reason you have to finish the job. Like those reasons, are beyond stupid.

    I agree with you on most of these and I try to keep those out of my story except for the dream one, because I have a fantasy race whose culture centers around having dreams that reveal hidden knowledge to them, which can include the future. I also think dreams can be really cool and I have fun making them really abstract and bizarre yet symbolic. David Lynch's work is my biggest inspiration for dream stuff.
    I also have a "strong" female character, and by that I mean she CAN be strong sometimes, when it's realistic, but she also has a background and personality that I think makes her more interesting and likable. She has her weaknesses and disappointments along with her awesomeness when the time is right.

    Hmm. I haven't thought of tragic villains in that way. I do agree they shouldn't be used to justify, only explain their motives. Personally I like villains where, rather than being tragic, they actually have understandable goals or even good goals, but take the wrong path. In Blade Runner, Roy Batty is a great example, as he just want his friends and himself to live longer than 4 years. The society he lives in treats him as inhuman, as property. So he justifiably lashes out.

    Disagree on the dreams. Dreams are a big part of life; almost 1/3rd of our time is spent asleep and a lot of it dreaming. i think we learn a lot about our past in dreams. As far as prophetic dreams, yes, that may be overdone, but not dreams about the past.

    • @HeadHunterSix
      @HeadHunterSix 2 года назад

      I agree! Often we learn about our present (or even future) in our dreams. When you have a dream about something and the general interpretation is "You're being faced with a situation you don't want to confront" or whatever, it's your subconscious trying to give you a hint. That's going to seem "prophetic" to a reader, but that's no reason to exclude it from fiction.
      Some of the best fiction can come from understanding the character better than they understand themselves - otherwise, there is no _discovery_ .

    Tragic villains are often a successful trope because they can be _relatable_ . If the same backstory would drive a _hero's_ actions, the shoe can fit on the other foot. If you can say "If that was my life/upbringing/circumstances, I might do that too" then the villain's not just a pell for the hero to joust upon.
    As for prophetic dreams? Sometimes a dream is just a dream - but the reason dream interpretation exists in real life is because dreams are often a way for us to understand a part of ourselves or our personalities that we may not be ready to consciously confront. So it can be used as a means for a character to understand something about themselves.

I was especially interested in “subverting the Chosen One trope.” Is that like in the Matrix, when the Oracle tells Neo he isn’t the one, but then he does it anyways... and then a decade later people say he really WASN’T the one-that Agent Smith was the one? Or do you mean The Chosen One isn’t going to save the world but destroy it thing? Or do you mean something else entirely? You’ve really got me thinking. Like Mega Mind being the villain, but saving the world. Or Lucifer not wanting to rule Hell any longer and moving to Miami to flirt with... well, everyone. Frodo being too weak to destroy the ring, so Sam has to do it. Or like most of the heroes in Game of Thrones who you see stand strong and then get their throats slashed/skull crushed/fatally penetrated by a shadow-thingy/eyes gouged out and skull crushed/soul sucked out/stabbed/poisoned or just beheaded ( sorry Ned)???

    A strong female character is not actually a strong female character if you have to mention being a strong female character.
    I do hate love triangles because they are a save way of ruining three characters at once. True love doesn't slip into or come out of love triangles. If you love someone there can be no third person. If cannot decide between two love interests, none of them is right one. If a love triangle makes sense anywhere it's when it's less about love but more about vanity and possession with all three characters involved being evil. A love triangle among three villains that the hero can use to trick them into foolish behavior would be one way I could accept this trope.

    One of my least favorite tropes is of a boy scout kung fu expert who is so wonderful you can't stand it. I don't mind it if the character is filled out and has aspects that are interesting outside his bad ass role. I liked "Cinderella Man". You cheered for him because he was a great guy, and he had to deal with conflicts a lot of people have to face in daily, outside the ring. His pain is understated, rather than smeared all over the screen in an effort to make you feel sorry for him. I liked Mickey Ruark in "The Wrestler". He is a bad ass, but he is kind of lost in life. His problems are largely of his own making, but he still manages to be a sympathetic character. I don't like movies that wallow in pity for this poor, misbegotten bad ass, like Mel Gibson in "Lethal Weapon", or Val Kilmer in "Tombstone". This character is very popular. People love to see him. He makes LOTS of money at the box office. "Lethal Weapon" got some good reviews in the box office, but I read a scathing review of this movie in a nationwide news magazine that depicted the way I felt about it.

  • @tomlewis4748

    Love triangle. Uh-huh. Story Grid implies that for a courtship love story, 'You must have a rival character!' They are adamant about that. 'Pride and Prejudice has one, so every love story must have one!'
    That's a great story by a great author, but why it's great is bc of a number of things, and a rival character might be necessary for some stories, but IMHO, there's much more than that to that great story or any great story, to the point where maybe it's really not always all that important to have your story mimic one of the greats all that closely. Especially one that's 200 years old.
    I rejected the idea out of hand. It just felt too worn and tired, and I saw that as something that would only get needlessly in the way of the story I wanted to tell.
    What I did instead is I created a number of 'imagined' rivals, meaning there are moments where lover #1 or lover #2 get jealous of someone without an actual reason to (the other lover isn't actually interested in the imagined rivals, but they-and at first the reader-are not sure if they are or not), and react accordingly. (That happens in real life all the time.) I even had two friends, male and female, conspire to try to make the two people who they were each in love with, see them 'faux flirting', which was done only to keep the others on their toes. Hey, it worked.
    Why the example? I think the takeaway here is to ask 'Just exactly why is it that I need this?' 'What will this trope (convention, in this case), really bring to my story?' and 'Are there better, maybe more creative and unique ways to accomplish what this is supposed to accomplish?' Often, there are.
    Tragic villains? I think the idea here is to add something that will make a villain more than just a 'black hat'. I also think this approach is typically not all that effective (and there are plenty of other ways to add depth to a villain other than trying to squeeze empathy for them from the reader). To me, the 'tragic villain' concept is just phoning it in.
    And in 1st-P, it's really difficult to give any villain any sort of 'redeeming qualities', too. We only see them through the POV of the MC/narrator, who really is not at all interested in pondering whatever redeeming qualities a villain intent on murdering them or their loved ones might have. All that POV can see is really going to be nothing more than the black hat, which makes sense.

    Another thing about the Chosen One trope that I find irritating is when the character is pathetic and pretty much stays that way. I've noticed this whole concept is based around them but they don't amount to anything close to their purpose. Plus, they're whiny.
    As for the dreams trope...I'm on the fence. Using them as a prophetic device can certainly be redundant. However, I'm biased! 🤷🏾
    Because I love dreams in general and for foreshadowing purposes or not, when it's just to terrorize the character. Okay, that's a nightmare but same difference.
    I used a dream as a form of recollection once, not a flashback but it's a long forgotten memory that they can't remember if it happened in actuality and it's resurfacing in fragments. Idk, I guess it's all subjective cause I don't really think most audiences find these annoying. Just us writers.

Also, send a group of people on a quest of some sort and whoever comes back alive is the chosen one. But my favorite dynamic is from Corvid Prompts, and it's somewhere along the lines of a teenager telling the villain that they're the chosen one and they can't win so just give up now, blah blah blah blah blah, and then the villain says "you're the fifth chosen one they've sent down."

    I like to say every villain has a reason, not an excuse but a reason, your past dose not excuse your actions because you could have done better and be a better person. I know many heros who have tragic backstories just like a villain. It's how the person chooses to live up to their actions and past that make them a hero or villain.im not saying that tragic backstories are bad, I love them, they explain stuff, I just don't like it when it's used as an excuse, I like the type of villains that make you question whether they really are a villain same thing with the hero, make me question if it really is a hero. WAIT, I need to see a story where the villain is really the hero and the hero really is the villin. Or if the hero and villain really are nether, if you think about it, in real life there is no pure good guy or absolutely bad guy. That's what I'm doing in my story, it's hard to explain, you'd understand it once I get the book out there.

    I hate this one trope, don't know the name. I guess you could call it "Schroedinger's crazy person." It's the one seen in far too many scifi and fantasy series where something happens to make the character -- usually the main character -- face an enemy that tries to make them think everything they've done in their life for the duration of the series (monster hunting, being a captain of a space station, or whatever) was all an elaborate delusion and now they're starting to suffer a bout of sanity. It's basically advanced, supernatural/high-tech gaslighting. I'm not talking about making a character question what's real or not in general, but specifically the sub-trope where one of the options is that they're in a mental institution.
    Though on a related note, I do get a bit twitchy about the more general "struggling with what's real and what's not" trope as well. I prefer to avoid it, but I will admit I've used it a couple times in my writing. Technically it was paranormal gaslighting, but I didn't make one of the options be a mental institution.

    Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles and madness in this world today, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
    Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be
    destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
    . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
    If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction).
    He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
    He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
    He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
    Christ says in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]
    - (AMPLIFIED version)
    NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus.
    X

    My absolute least favorite trope is when the story blatantly sides with one political side without giving the opposite viewpoint a chance. Bioware has done this on occasion (heck, it's one of the reason _Mass Effect: Andromeda_ failed so epically, not to mention the way it hammers transgender pronouns into your head with the background announcer not unlike North Korea hammering its agenda onto its people with loudspeakers) and about four years ago on _Once Upon a Time,_ the writers shoehorned a same-sex kissing scene. It was obviously forced because (1) it had previously shown a main character kiss her son on the forehead, (2) Dorothy and Robin Hood immediately upgraded to couple status despite barely knowing each other beforehand, and (3) everyone uncharacteristically started grinning, eliminating all free will on how to feel about the scene (specifically, the scene _commanded_ you feel a certain way!)!

    • @ALTZIMATE
      @ALTZIMATE 5 лет назад +4

      @@rodproducts Sure, though I don't know how I'd summarize my debate for a comment section but I'll try lol. First thing I'd debate about is, Dream sequences. Reedsy kinda went into several different types of dreams, but then just landed on not liking dreams at all when saying "Im just not a fan of dream sequences".
      Now she did give several reasons to why that was, however, I am currently editing my finished manuscript that I personally put a dream sequence in. So basically, I guess you can say Im a victim of this trope. But I did hesitate on putting it into my fictional story, but obviously, I landed on doing so anyway. But back to the point I was making; the reason why dreams are such a cool element in a story, is because you can now BEND THE WORLD. Things that were not once possible in your story, due to the realism of your world can now be accessed. (Think INCEPTION). This makes for really cool scenes that without it wouldn’t be possible.
      Also, dreams is a good way to show the complexity of your character. What I mean by this is, even if your story is all the way FIRST PERSON, and you know the characters every thought, passion and goal and what they are against. A dream can expose them for being in denial.
      You can also make a character see a different point of view, in a short but sweet dramatic fashion. Or even have them face problems they never thought possible. Alot of writers misuse the power a dream sequence can actually do, but when you really put that power to it's best use I think it can be one of the highest points in your story. And lastly, I want to touch on one element Reedsy said, and that was using a dream to prophesize.
      Now, this is a cool element too but one that I feel, is a double-sided sword because you can end up spoiling your own story. But my take on this is, every dream should have a MEANING. prophesizing is the most basic and cliche meaning to a dream I admit, but still. It can be used extraordinarily. An easy way to do this, is by not making the premonition so obvious. Use it to create an element of mystery, or something to be figured out.
      Also Like Reedsy said, dreams are pretty much a SAFE ZONE. The character often is in no real danger, and because of that readers and listeners do infact tune out. But here's a tip, dont make it obvious to the reader that it's a dream until the moment the character wakes up; OR here's a twist, what if the character was ACTUALLY IN DANGER? Again, think back to what I said earlier. In a dream, YOU CAN BEND THE WORLD; so you could make that possible. (Again, think INCEPTION). This is a hit or miss technique because if done wrong you just killed a potentially great story. But if done correctly, that might be your best chapter. Those are all reasons to why I think Dream sequences do work in stories.
      @Reedsy Now lets argue :)
