Russia Drops ODAB 1500 Bomb - What You Need to Know!

- The use of explosive weapons has long defined the brutality of war. But a new and particularly destructive weapon has entered the fray in Ukraine: the thermobaric bomb, also known as a "vacuum bomb." These devices unleash a devastating blast wave and consume surrounding oxygen, inflicting horrific injuries and causing widespread destruction.
The battle for control of eastern Ukraine intensified in May 2024 as the Russian military ramps up its offensive in the Kharkiv region. The city of Volchansk has become a focal point, with Ukrainian forces facing a relentless barrage of artillery and air attacks.
Then, on May 21st, the fight took a terrifying turn. Russia deployed the ODAB-1500 thermobaric bomb for the first time. This weapon, nicknamed the "Father of All Bombs'' by some, is designed to unleash a brutal combination of extreme heat and pressure, devastating anything caught in its path.
The attack, reported by ANNA News, resulted in substantial damage to the building and inflicted severe casualties on the personnel inside. The exact extent of the losses remains under assessment. A video of the strike, shared on the Telegram channel Severen Veter, confirmed the involvement of the Russian air force, although the precise timing of the attack was not disclosed.

The US used these weapons against ragtags in Afghanistan and and similar "daisy cutters" agaist grass huts in Vietnam still lost both wars. The only difference between the US and Russia has nothing to do with willingness to use brutality but that Russia isn't going to lose the war.

for the past 3 years Russia is still working their way through their soviet era weapons stockpiles. That begs a couple of questions 1) Just how many weapons Russia had to begin with 2) What modern new weapons Russia has tucked up its sleeves.

USA strategy was to build large stockpiles of weapons, many are exported. Russia's strategy focused on having endless war factories that can be activated to make the weapons needed for the war at hand. That is because of Russia's history of fighting defensive wars against France and then Germany. Napoleon actually made it further into Russia than the Germans.... Moscow was burned to the ground by the Russians rather than allowing France to take it. The, French troops got stuck there and most perished in the cold winter.
Thermobaric bombs don't "suck air from your lungs", it explodes your organs just like all other bombs
It burns the oxygen and creates a vacuum, this vacuum gets filled up with air from the surroundings, so yes it could in ridiculous circumstances it could potentially collapse your lungs, but thats if the giant fireball and bone crunching shock wave doesn't kill you first.
@@tomj3655 the shockwave creates a low pressure zone like any other explosion. It does not burn oxygen, it uses the oxygen in the air as oxidant like any open flame.

Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas.
If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure

very different.. ODAB 1500 is glide bomb that can cruise for 10's of miles before hitting target making anti aircraft missile useless. America had what you call dumb bombs. Bombs that needed the aircraft releasing it to be relatively close to the target making it more dangerous to the pilot
The two bombs that were used in the Vietnam War were the first prototypes - CBU-55 (340 Kg) which used propane as its fuel and the more efficient CBU-72 (250 Kg) with ethyl oxide as the fuel which was not only thermobaric but a chemical weapon as ethyl oxide is highly toxic. Note that these weapons did not use Napalm as they were a different animal altogether. Yes, they dropped our Air Cavalry boys in the area after dropping those bombs because the COC never gave a 'souvlaki' about our soldiers.

Thermobaric bombs were generally devised and utilized in Afghanistan as a way to totally eviscerate a cave of all life....they reached higher expectations being more successful than first envisioned. The thermobaric bomb was soon deployed everywhere else, not just for clearing out caves. Its a grand piece of bomb chemical development. During WWII Torpex was developed as a super-explosive, far more devastating than standard TNT, thermobaric bombs are the next generation in this series.

Most cemeteries are war memorials, like those near Kiev. This is open information from Ukrainian sources.
3:50. NO. NO. The ODAB 1500 is not the "FOAB" which is said to yield about 44 tons. FOAB is a very large weapon that is difficult to deploy in the modern anti-aircraft environment. It is a large version of USA's MOAB.

@@mianmyahya xActly. Delivery of the bomb is the problem. We don't hear much about the "mighty" A-10 warthog anymore. Turns out they are really easy to take out with a variety of anti-aircraft, including man portable weapons. Thousands produced, useful against 3rd world nations, just like MOAB.

Huge mistake by confusing the ODAB-1500 with the 'Father Of All Bombs' - the Sukhoi-24 aircraft has two points in its fuselage capable of carrying two of these bombs without any issues. I believe that the Russian Armed Forces is just experimenting using these bombs converted to 'glide bombs' using their $20K wing kit so they just dropped one and filmed it to later on calculate the results. (i.e. ceiling range of aircraft and speed while dropping it for an extended range, height of detonation, angle of attack for a more efficient pressure wave, etc.) The Russian scientists are superb in both Physics and Mathematics and quite methodical in their analysis. The US was tough on the Japanese. They dropped two different kinds of nuclear bombs. It was a last resort, and an experiment, but Russia had to endure.

hmm, it's actually a good idea to use glide thermobaric bombs, it solves issue of short range for TOS-1A. However, I wonder if 3x ODAB-500 salvo from the same bomber would be more effective. It's not like standard HE leveling buildings, this one is designed to kill humans in the area and it would be better perhaps to have multiple smaller one hitting the grid. ODAB 500 would be longer range than ODAB 1500 as well.

Nothing new here. Our forces worked together to commit atrocities in Afghanistan. And, we still lost that war.

I so wish Zelensky and his team had never listened to treacherous Boris Johnson back in March 2022 and had settled this conflict before it got so ugly.
